  • This study was aimed to investigate whether soy protein hydrolysates had beneficial effects on serum and tissue lipid contents and appetite-related hormones as compared with intact soy protein. Four-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed AIN-93M diet containing high fat (18% w/w) with low protein (10% w/w). After four weeks, the rats were divided into four groups (n = 8/group) and fed experimental diets with different nitrogen sources and levels, respectively; 10% soy protein isolate (10SPI), 25% soy protein isolate (25SPI), 25% soy protein hydrolysates (25SPH) and 25% soy macro-peptide fractions (25SPP, MW $\geq$ 10,000) for six weeks. Weight gain was significantly higher in 25% nitrogen sources-fed groups than in 10% group (10SPI). In 25SPP, perirenal fat mass and serum total lipid were significantly lower than in other groups. As for appetite-related hormones, serum ghrelin concentration was not shown to be different among groups but leptin concentration was significantly decreased in 25SPP. It can be concluded that soy macro-peptide fractions as compared with intact soy protein may have beneficial effects on reducing fat mass and serum lipid.

  • Background : In April 6, 1990, a male researcher who has worked at a research unit at the Basic Research Building of Seoul National University(SNU) College of Medicine admitted to SNU Hospital due to persistent fever. He was diagnosed serologically as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome(HFRS). Another female researcher in the same unit was also diagnosed as HFRS at the same hospital several days later. Epidemic investigation of HFRS was conducted to determine the magnitude of the problems since these two cases were strongly suspected to have laboratory-acquired infections of HFRS. Methods : All researchers and employees working at the Basic Research Building(BRB) of SNU College of Medicine as of April 1, 1996 were recruited for the study, information on symptoms of HFRS and history of contact to experimental animals were collected by self-administered questionnaires and serological tests among study subjects were also conducted by indirect immunofluorescent antibody(IFA) to hantavirus. The experimental animals were also serologically tested for infection with hantavirus by IFA. Results : Among 218 surveyed, six researchers and an animal caretaker had hantavirus antibodies above 1:20 in IFA titer. Five of seven sero-positive subjects had antibodies above 1:640 in IFA titer and had shown clinical symptoms compatible to HFRS during Jan. 1 to Apr, 20, 1996. The sero-positive persons had handled animals more frequently than sero-negative persons (OR, 19,68; 95% Cl, 1.11-350.40) and handling animals at the animal quarter at School of Public Health(SPH) had shown consistently higher risk to get infected with hantavirus irrespective of types of animals handled (OR, 4.90-6.37). Sero-positivity of rats of the aniamal quarter at BRB was 30-60%, whereas 80% of rats at SPH tested were shown sero-positivity. Conclusion: There was a epidemic of HFRS in research units of a medical school during the period from Jan. through Apr, Further investigation is needed to determine the extent and the mode of transmission of the laboratory-acquired infection with hantavirus in other research facilities.

  • Simulating the clumping and stiffness of wet hair or fur is a challenging problem. The dynamics of wet hair or fur is characterized by the clumping and stiffness at the tip, which is easily seen in running animals or headbanging scenes. Existing methods address these phenomenon within pre-set scenarios. But there is no consensus on the method of depicting the details of wet hair. Hence, the present paper proposes a new method of modeling the clumping and stiffness of wet hair or fur. Previous studies focused on modeling the absorption of water into hair or fur, whereas this paper highlights a realistic simulation of wet hair. Unlike dry hair strands, wet hair strands adjacent to one another are subjected to the clumping force and gather together, while at the same time becoming stiff as the saturation of water increases. The proposed method builds on the surface tension model based on SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) to simulate the clumping force and to adjust the hair elasticity by giving stiffness constraints. The present method enables a realistic simulation of wet hair by maintaining the clumping force of the wet hair even in dynamic motions, and by simulating the stiffness of hair in line with water saturation.

  • For the myopia eyes of the people which are ametropia, the classified distribution has showed % for the simple myopic, 50% for the compound myopic astigmatism, 15% for the simple myopic astigmatism and 19% for the mixed astigmatism. The myopic ametropia for the both eyes has the distribution of 35% for -0.50D~-2.00Dptr, 54% for -2.00~6.00Dptr, and 11% for over -6.00Dptr. The classifying distribution for the age for the myopic ametropia was 54% for 15~20, 22% for 21~40, 14% for 41~60 and 10% for 61. The occupational distribution for the myopic ametropia has showed 61.5% for the student(Middle, High, College), 13.5% for the office worker, and 15% for the house wives as well as the small business. The hour affecting the refraction most for a day was after P.M. 7 which recorded 45% as the highest value. The reason is that the myopia degree decreases in the morning as the cornea flats and the situation is reversed in the afternoon so that there is a difference of Sph -0.50D and as getting darker the refraction degree of the light coming through the enlarged pupil refraction around the cornea is high. For the seasons the highest myopic degree has been recorded for 68% in the summer due to the shortage of nutrition and the climination inside the body by the exhaustion of sweat. In the blood types A and B are distributed closely as 34% and more active man with O has recorded higher myopic degree than woman. However woman showed higher accommodation power than man regardless the blood types. In the characteristic factors of myopic eye, the character feels fatigue easily has showed the distribution for 42% which is the highest and it could be classified largely by two the.

  • The rapid turning and acceleration movement of a rotorcraft leads to a sloshing phenomenon in the fuel tank. Sloshing caused by rapid movement can affect the internal components by creating an excessive load. In severe situations, the resulting damage to the internal components and pipes can also lead to the tearing of the fuel tank itself. Therefore, to improve the survivability of the crew, the internal components of the fuel tank must be designed to retain their structural soundness during the sloshing phenomenon. In order to accomplish this, the sloshing load acting on the components first needs to be determined. This paper investigates the sloshing load applied to the internal components by performing numerical analysis for rotary-wing aircraft fuel tanks in the sloshing test. Fluid-Structural Interaction (FSI) analysis based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is conducted and the conditions specified in the US military standard (MIL-DTL-27422D) are employed for the numerical simulation. Based on this numerical simulation, by analyzing the load applied to the internal components of the fuel tank due to the sloshing phenomenon, the possibility of obtaining the design data by numerical analysis is examined.

  • The crashworthiness of the fuel tank of a rotorcraft is verified through the crash impact test. The crash impact test has a high risk of failure due to the application of an excessive load, which can seriously affect the overall development schedule of the aircraft. Therefore, a lot of effort has been made to minimize the possibility of failure in the actual test by carrying out a numerical analysis of the crash impact test of the fuel tank in the initial design stage. Recently, an external auxiliary fuel tank was added to increase the cruising distance. In this study, the numerical analysis results of the crash impact test based on several different shapes of the external auxiliary fuel tank are presented, in order to evaluate its crashworthiness. For the numerical analysis, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is one of the fluid-structure coupled analysis methods, is applied and the test conditions prescribed by US military standards are reflected in the analysis conditions. In addition, the material property data previously obtained by the specimen test of the actual fuel tank is applied to the numerical analysis. As a result, the equivalent stress of the fuel tank material itself and the metal fitting is provided and the possibility of acquiring data for designing the crash-worthiness of the external auxiliary fuel tank is evaluated by examining the behavior and working load of the internal mounted components.

  • The impact damage behavior of steel-strengthened concrete panels exposed to explosive loading is investigated. Since real explosion experiments require the vast costs to facilities as well as the blast and impact damage mechanisms are too complicated, numerical analysis has lately become a subject of special attention. However, for engineering problems involving blast wave and fragment impact, there is no single numerical method that is appropriate to the various problems. In order to evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panel subject to blast wave and fragment impact loading, an explicit analysis program, AUTODYN is used in this work. The multi-solver coupling methods such as Euler-Lagrange and SPH-Lagrange coupling method in order to improve efficiency and accuracy of numerical analysis is implemented. The simplified and idealized two dimensional and axisymmetric models are used in order to obtain a reasonable computation running time. As a result of the analysis, concrete panels subject to either blast wave or fragment impact loading without the steel plate are shown the scabbing and perforation. The perforation can be prevented by concrete panels reinforced with steel plate. The numerical results show good agreement with the results of the experiments.

  • In this study, high velocity impact tests along with modeling of material behavior and numerical analyses were conducted to predict the dispersion behavior of the debris resulting from a high velocity impact fracture. For the impact tests, two different materials were employed for both the projectile and the target plate - the first setup employed aluminum alloy while the second employed steel. The projectile impacts the target plate with a velocity of approximately 1 km/s were enforced to generate the impact damages in the aluminum witness plate through the fracture debris. It was confirmed that, depending on the material employed, the debris dispersion behavior as well as the dispersion radii on the witness plate varied. A numerical analysis was conducted for the same impact test conditions. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)-finite element (FE) coupled technique was then applied to model the fracture and damage upon the debris. The experimental and numerical results for the diameters of the perforation holes in the target plate and the debris dispersion radii on the witness plate were in agreement within a 5% error. In addition, the impact test using steel was found to be more threatening as proven by the larger debris dispersion radius.

  • Crash impact test is conducted to verify the crashworthiness of fuel tank. Success of the crash impact test means the improvement of survivability of crews by preventing post-crash fire. But, there is a big risk of failure due to huge external load in the crash impact test. The failure of crash impact test can result in serious delay of a entire rotorcraft development because of the design complement and re-production of the test specimens requiring a long-term preparation. Thus, the numerical simulations of the crash impact test has been required at the early design stage to minimize the possibility of trial-and-error in the real test. Present study conducts on the numerical simulation of phase I crash impact test using SPH supported by crash simulation software, LS-DYNA. Test condition of MIL-DTL-27422 is reflected on analysis and material data is acquired by specimen test of fuel cell material. As a result, the crash load on the skin material, overlap area and metal fitting is estimated to confirm the possibility of acquisition of the design load for the determination of the overlap area and adhesive strength.
