  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare differences in bowel movement in women who had an abdominal hysterectomy and were treated for 10 minutes with San Yin Jiao (SP6) acupressure at three different time periods. Methods : The design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized post test only design. The participants included 123 women, 30 in experimental group 1 (post anesthesia 30 min), 22 in the experimental group 2 (post anesthesia 4 hours), 23 in experimental group 3 (Post anesthesia 24 hours), and 48 in a control group. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire consisting of general characteristics, self reported time when gas was first passed. Differences in the time when first gas was passed among four groups were analyzed using ANOVA. Results : There was no a statistical difference among the 4 groups for the time when gas was first passed. Conclusion : It is necessary to replicate the study with sonographic data for bowel movement.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare differences in the time when bowel sounds were heard and gas was passed in women who had an abdominal hysterectomy and were treated for 5 minutes (experimental group A) or 10 minutes (experimental group B) with San-Yin-Jiao (SP-6) acupressure. Method: The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized post test only design. The participants included 142 women, 39 in experimental group A, 30 in experimental group B, and 73 in the control group. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire which included items on general characteristics and a self report of time when gas was passed. Differences for the three groups as to time when bowel sounds were heard and gas was passed were analyzed using ANOVA. Result: The time when bowel sounds were heard was statistically significantly shorter in both experimental groups compared to the control group(F=10.29, p=.000). The time when gas was passed was statistically significantly shorter in experimental group B(10 min) compared to the control group(F=4.68, p=.011). Conclusion: It could be concluded that SP-6 acupressure of 10 minutes was effective in shortening the time until bowel sounds were heard and gas was passed for women who had had an abdominal hysterectomy. Replication of the study with a larger number of participants is necessary in order to be able to generalize the results.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of acupressure on pruritus and sleep among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: The study design was a nonequivalent control group repeat measures quasiexperimental study. Data were collected from June to September 2015 in the kidney center at a hospital located in B city. Participants were 42 patients; 20 in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. For the experimental group, acupressure on the spots of Sameumgyo (SP6), Zoksamli (ST36), Hyolhae (SP10), and Gokji (LI11) was provided at the time of hemodialysis three times a week for 12 weeks. The numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to measure pruritus, and sleep was measured with the sleep scale developed by Jinju Oh et al. Results: There was a significant decrease in pruritus (F=7.80, p=.008) and increase in sleep (F=80.90, p<.001) in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings confirmed in the study show that acupressure is an effective nursing intervention to decrease pruritus felt by patients on hemodialysis and to increase the quality of their sleep.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the change of Electroencephalogram (EEG) and concentration by practicing acupressure at the GB20 on normal humans. We selected 36 children and divided them into GB20 group and SP6 group. Electrode was measured in Fp1 and Fp2, and EEG was measured before and after practicing acupressure at the GB20 and SP6. Sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.043). M-$\beta$ wave increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.022). H-$\beta$ wave increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.040). $\gamma$ wave increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.021). $(SMR+M-\beta)/\Theta$ ratio increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.023). $\beta/\Theta$ ratio increased significantly at the GB20 group (p=0.020). On the other hand, $\alpha$ and $\Theta$ wave did not have significant changes. Through this experiment, we conclude that acupressure at the GB20 on normal humans could increase the ability of concentration.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of SP-6 Seoam pellet therapy given to female university students in terms of menstrual pain, menstrual distress, and ADL difficulties. Methods: This study used a pre-test, post-test design with a nonequivalent control group. The participants were 68 female students in two universities. The experimental group(n=34) received Seoam pellet therapy at Sanyinjiao while the control group(n=34) received sham therapy. Data were collected from Sep. 16 to Nov. 30, 2012. Severity of menstrual pain, menstrual distress, and difficulty of ADL were assessed prior to and following treatment. Independent t-test, $x^2$ test, and repeated measures ANOVA were used for examination of group differences using the SPSS/WIN program. Results: Severity of menstrual pain (F=41.09, p<.001), menstrual distress (F=56.31, p<.001), and ADL difficulties (F=46.64, p<.001) showed a significant decrease in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Results indicate that this Seoam pellet therapy is effective in reducing menstrual pain, menstrual distress, and difficulty of ADL. Therefore, use of this method is recommended for relief of menstrual pain and menstrual distress through self-care.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to show effectiveness of Acupuncture treatment on gastrointestinal dysfunctions after Cesarean section by analyzing randomized controlled clinical trials. Methods: We searched randomized controlled clinical trials related with acupuncture treatment on gastrointestinal dysfunctions after Cesarean section through national and overseas database and analyzed them in detail. Results: 6 articles were included according to our selection criteria and 1,084 women were involved. 3 studies used TEAS (Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation), 2 studies used Elastic band and 1 study used Acupressure by hand. Their results were statistically more effective than control groups. The most frequently used acupoints were Neiguan (PC6), Zusanli (ST36) followed by Sanyinjiao (SP6), Hegu (IL4). Conclusions: There was significant difference in the effectiveness of the intervention including Acupuncture treatment. Based on analysis, it could be an effective way for the treatment of gastrointestinal dysfunctions after Cesarean section in clinical practice.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to identify the research trends and to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Korean medicine treatment by analyzing the recently published clinical studies of Korean medicine treatment on nocturnal enuresis in children. Methods The literatures were searched from OASIS, KISS, NDSL, RISS, Cochrane, CINAHL, Embase, Pubmed, and only clinical studies published from 2000 to October 2019 were included. The publication year, study type, type of enuresis, demographic information of participants, duration of illness, intervention type and details, follow-up period, outcome measurements and adverse events of selected literatures were analyzed. Results A total of 38 studies were selected. In the selected studies, acupuncture was the most frequently used treatment for nocturnal enuresis, followed by herbal medicine, electrical stimulation treatment, moxibustion, acupressure and plaster therapy. The most commonly used acupoints for acupuncture were SP6 and CV4, and the most used herbal medicine was Chukcheonwhan, while Alpiniae Fructus (益智仁) and Dioscoreae Rhizoma (山藥) were the most used herbal materials. Most of the studies showed that the total effective rate of Korean medicine treatment was high. All the adverse events occurred in the Korean medicine treatment group were caused by acupuncture or puncture. Conclusions This study analyzed clinical studies of Korean medicine treatment on nocturnal enuresis in children, identified the research trends and evaluated the effectiveness and safety of the Korean medicine treatment.
