The effects of seven commercial gums (xanthan gum, guar gum, pectin, gum arabic, gellan, locust bean gum, and sodium alginate) at different concentrations (0, 0.3, and 0.6%) on flow properties of sweet potato starch (SPS) pastes were investigated. Flow behavior characteristics were adequately described by power law flow model, and yield stress was also measured by vane method. SPS-gum mixtures (5% w/w) at $25^{\circ}C$ were found to have high shear-thinning flow behavior with yield stress, and their consistency index (K) and apparent viscosity ($\eta_{a,100}$) increased with elevated gum concentration, except for pectin and sodium alginate. Vane yield stress ($\sigma_o$) value of SPS-pectin mixture was lower when compared to other mixtures while that of SPS-gellan mixture was much higher. Most of the gums, except for pectin, gum arabic, and sodium alginate, showed a synergistic effect on the elastic properties of SPS-gum mixtures. In general, the flow properties of SPS-gum mixtures appeared to be strongly influenced by the addition of gum, and dependent on the type and concentration of gum.
Depolymerization of sodium alginate (SA) was carried out by electron beam irradiation in a hydrogen peroxide atmosphere. E-beam with 1.0 and 2.5 MeV of accelerating voltages were employed in this experiment. For control of molecular weight and the radiation yield of scission ($G_s$), the irradiation dosage of e-beam was managed in a range from 2.5 to 20 kGy while the quantity of hydrogen peroxide was adjusted in a range of 0 to 4.5%. The chemical structure of the depolymerized sodium alginate (DSA) was analyzed to have scission of 1,4-glycoside bond mainly and a few fragmentary formate end groups which may be produced by the cleavage between C2 and C3 in repeating unit of alginate. It turned out to have simple chemical structures at the DSA end groups, produced by e-beam irradiation, similar with those in the polymer SA structure. As a result, the molecular weight of SA decreased as the energy and dosage of applied e-beam increased, and the radiation yield of scission showed the best result at 2w/v% in SA concentration. The highest radiation yield of scission ($7.919{\times}10^4mol/J$) was confirmed when an irradiation dosage of 20 kGy (2 MeV) and 1.5% hydrogen peroxide were used in 2% SA aqueous solution.
The present study was conducted to elucidate effects of heat, salt and hydrocolloid treatments on flying fish Cypselurus agoo roe analogs prepared using calcium alginate gel. The changes in size, sphericity and rupture strength of the analogs as affected by treatments of heat, sodium chloride and hydrocolloids were investigated. The size (mm), sphericity (%), and rupture strength (kPa) of the analogs were $2.2{\pm}0.1$, $98.2{\pm}0.2$, and $74.7{\pm}1.7$, respectively. When the analogs were heated at $95^{\circ}C$ in water, the size was slightly decreased. The rupture strength by curing with 2% sodium chloride was slightly increased. Sphericity didn't show significant differences by sodium chloride and heat treatment. The rupture strength of the analogs was slightly decreased by heat treatment, whereas remarkably decreased by curing with sodium chloride. In order to prevent a remarkable decrease in rupture strength of the analogs by curing with sodium chloride, the analogs were treated with hydrocolloids such as xanthan gum, gum guar, glucomannan, pectin and gelatin. The hydrocolloids treated analogs showed an increment in size and no significant changes in sphericity. On the other hand, the rupture strength of the hydrocolloids treated analogs exhibited remarkable increase than that of untreated ones.
Sparassis latifolia is a fungus abundant in β-glucan and amino acids and is highly valued as a medicinal mushroom. Among amino acids, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a free amino acid and has biological effects, such as increase/decrease of hypertension, improvement of cerebral blood flow, and prevention of dementia. In this study, biological elicitors were used to increase bioactive substances as a biofortification method. Sodium alginate extracted from seaweed (Sargassum horneri, Sargassum fulvellum, Sargassum fusiforme) were used as the elicitor. The levels of β-glucan and GABA in the mycelium and fruiting body grown by adding the elicitor to the medium were investigated. Addition of sodium alginate positively affected GABA production and negatively affected the β-glucan production in these fungi. Sodium alginates extracted from S. fulvellum induced the highest increase in GABA in the mycelium and fruiting bodies. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the extracts from mycelium and fruiting bodies on dendrite development in primary cortical neurons. We found that the extract from the fruiting bodies of sodium alginate treated fungi with increased levels of GABA inhibited the dendrite outgrowth of excitatory neurons, but not inhibitory neurons.
Two types of alginate gel beads capable of floating in the gastric cavity were prepared. The first, alginate gell bead containing olive oil(Al-Oil), is a hydrogel bead and its buoyancy is attributable to olive oil held in the alginate gel matrix. The model drug, metronidazole(MZ), contained in Al-Oil was released gradually into artificial gastric fluid. The profiles of MZ release from Al-Oil shown initial burst and after 90 min they were about 100%. The second, alginate gel bead containing curdlan microsphere(Al-C), is a gel bead with curdlan-MZ microsphere in the matrix. To sustained release rate of drug, alginate bead were prepared curdlan microsphere containing MZ. Results demonstrated that sustained delivery of MZ over 2h can be easily achieved while the bead remained float. The release properties of prepared alginate beads are applicable not only for sustained release of drugs but also for targeting the gastric mucosa.
For the purpose of developing a high quality agricultural microbial inoculant, methods and materials for improving encapsulation were investigated. Preparation of capsule was conducted by improving extrusion system with micro-nozzle and peristaltic pump. The sodium alginate was selected because of its cheapness, stability of cells, and gel formation ability. The yields, physical properties and gel formation abilities of extractable alginate from sea tangle were investigated by hot water extractable and alkali soluble methods. The extraction yields of hot water extractable alginate (HWEA) and alkali soluble alginate (ASA) from sea tangle were 8 and 20%, respectively. The HWEA was almost not viscous even in 1.5% of the sample solution, whereas the ASA was very highly viscous in above 3% sample solution. The gel formation ability of each samples varied from 1.5% to 5% and the ASA showed a good gel formation ability at 3% solution as commercial alginate (CA). The soil microbial inoculant, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus plantarum and Geotrichum candidum encapsulated sodium alginate with starch and zeolite for stabilizer. The survivability of encapsulated soil microbial inoculant using alginate without stabilizer appeared to be 66, 52, 70 and 50%, respectively. Inclusion of starch and zeolite with alginate bead increased viabilities in Bacillus sp. and Geotrichum candidum by 81-83% and 89%, respectively.

Polymer blending constitutes a most useful method for the improvement or modification of the physicochemical properties of polymeric materials. Some of the polymer blends exhibit unusual properties, unexpected from homopolymers. An important property of a polymer blend is the miscibility of its component, because it affects the mechanical properties, the morphology, its permeability and degradation [1, 2]. (omitted)
A semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) was prepared for a temperature-sensitive polymer system composed of sodium alginate and poly (N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-co-ethyl acrylamide (EAAm)). The role of sodium alginate is to provide crosslinked network and that of poly(DMAEMA-co-EAAm) is to provide temperature responsiveness to the polymer system. Semi-IPN gel shows temperature-induced swelling transition at the same temperature of the lower critical solution temperature of poly(DMAEMA-co-EAAm) and its swelling kinetics is manipulated by the control of crosslinking densitv.
Immobilized cells of Arthrohacter nitroguajacolicus ZJUTB06-99 capable of producing nitrilase were used for biotransformation of acrylonitrile to acrylic acid. Six different entrapment matrixes were chosen to search for a suitable support in terms of nitrilase activity. Ca-alginate proved to be more advantageous over other counterparts in improvement of the biocatalyst activity and bead mechanical strength. The effects of sodium alginate concentration, $CaCl_2$ concentration, bead diameter, and ratio by weight of cells to alginate, on biosynthesis of acrylic acid by immobilized cells were investigated. Maximum activity was obtained under the conditions of 1.5% sodium alginate concentration, 3.0% $CaCl_2$ concentration, and 2-mm bead size. The beads coated with 0.10% polyethylenimine (PEI) and 0.75% glutaraldehyde (GA) could tolerate more phosphate and decrease leakage amounts of cells from the gel. The beads treated with PEI/GA could be reused up to 20 batches without obvious decrease in activities, which increased about 100% compared with the untreated beads with a longevity of 11 batches.
This study was performed to determine the effectiveness of poloxamer/sodium alginate mixture(PX/SA) barriers on prevention of post-operative peritoneal adhesion in dogs. Fifteen mongrel dogs were divided into three experimental groups: non-treated group, 2% Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) treated group and PX/SA treated group. In order to induce adhesions, the anti-mesenteric serosa of the ileum was exteriorized and then abraded in a standard manner by scraping with a scalpel blade to create homogeneous petechial hemorrhagic surface over a 1 ${\times}$ 1 cm area. Solution of SCMC was allowed to spread across the intraperitoneal organs through a catheter using a syringe. PX/SA was simply coated over the abraded tissues. On day before and day 1, 4, 7, and 14 after operation, venous blood specimens were collected for measurement of RBC, total WBC and fibrinogen. The adhesions were blindly assessed 3 weeks later by using a computerized tensiometer. The RBC, total WBC and fibrinogen values of three groups showed no statistical significances. The mean tensile strength(gram force, gf) of formed adhesions on day 21 after surgery was 173.05${\pm}$113.48 in the non-treated group, 111.42 ${\pm}$ 38.25 in the SCMC group, and 69.00 ${\pm}$ 45.07 in the PX/SA group. The tensile strength values for adhesion seperation in PX/SA group was lower than those in SCMC group(p < 0.05) and significantly lower than those in the non-treated group(p < 0.05). Our data suggested that PX/SA should be effective on reducing peritoneal adhesion formation in dogs compared with SCMC. PX/SA may be applicable to preventing post-operative intraperitoneal adhesion in dogs.
