Synergistic effect of clay and polypropylene short fibers in epoxy based ternary composite hybrids

  • Polypropylene short fiber (PP)-clay particulate-epoxy ternary composites were prepared by reinforcing PP short fiber and clay particles in the range of 0.1 phr to 0.7 phr into epoxy resin. Prepared hybrid composites were characterized for their mechanical, thermal and flame retardant properties. The obtained results indicated an increase in impact resistance, tensile strength, flexural strength and Young's modulus to an extent (up to 0.5 phr clay and 0.5 phr PP short fiber) and then decreases as the reinforcing phases are further increased. The thermal stability of these materials are found to increase up to 0.2 phr clay and 0.2 phr PP addition, beyond which it is decreased. Addition of clay is found to have the negative effect on epoxy-PP short fiber composites, which is evident from the comparison of mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy-0.5 phr PP short fiber composite and epoxy-0.5 phr PP short fiber-0.5 phr clay composite hybrid. UL-94 tests conducted on the composite hybrids have showed a reduction in the burning rate. Morphological observations indicated a greater fiber pull with the addition of clay. The performed tests in the present study indicated that materials under investigation have promising applications in construction, agriculture and decorative purposes.

  • The epidemic model is used to model the spread of disease and to control the disease. In this research, we utilize SEIR model which is one of applications the SIR model that incorporates Exposed step to the model. The SEIR model assumes that a people in the susceptible contacted infected moves to the exposed period. After staying in the period, the infectee tends to sequentially proceed to the status of infected, recovered, and removed. This type of infection can be used for research in cases where there is a latency period after infectious disease. In this research, we collected respiratory infectious disease data for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERSCoV). Assuming that the spread of disease follows a stochastic process rather than a deterministic one, we utilized the Poisson process for the variation of infection and applied epidemic model to the stochastic chemical reaction model. Using observed pandemic data, we estimated three parameters in the SIER model; exposed rate, transmission rate, and recovery rate. After estimating the model, we applied the fitted model to the explanation of spread disease. Additionally, we include a process for generating the Exposed trajectory during the model estimation process due to the lack of the information of exact trajectory of Exposed.

Coronary Arterial Lesions of Kawasaki Disease Observed in a Mouse Model of Sepsis: A Pilot Study and a Review of the Literature (패혈증 마우스 모델에서 가와사키병의 관상동맥 병변 관찰: 예비연구와 문헌고찰)

  • Purpose: Coronary arterial lesions (CALs) were reported to have developed in children with systemic inflammatory diseases, as well as those with Kawasaki disease (KD). The purpose of this study was to confirm that the CAL development in children with KD occurs in a mouse model of sepsis presenting typical systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Methods: To induce the sepsis mouse model with SIRS, 6-week-old C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with endotoxin. We compared histological findings of the major organs between the control and the sepsis groups and examined CAL in the heart of the septic mice. Results: Infiltrating inflammatory cells were relatively increased in the heart, liver, and kidneys of the sepsis group, compared with those of the control group. We confirmed lymphocytic infiltration in the myocardium (myocarditis) and the pericardial soft tissue of the heart. Furthermore, coronary artery of the septic mouse was identified, but CAL was not observed. Conclusions: In this study, we failed to confirm the existence of CAL in a mouse model of sepsis. However, it is well-known that CALs are seen in many kinds of diseases that cause SIRS. Our findings suggest further investigation into the clinical significance of CAL in various systemic inflammatory diseases, including KD.

  • It is analyzed that the energy pattern is affected by the social matters of the disease trend where the energy consumption has been reduced following the depression of the national economy. The campaign of social distance for the people has been done by voluntary or legally due to the epidemic of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Some economic stimulus policies have been done in some countries including the United States, South Korea, and some others. It is shown the susceptible, infectious, and recovered (SIR) modeling applied by system dynamics (SD) where the logical modeling is constructed with S, I, and R. Especially, the I is connected with Society including Population, Race, and Maturity. In addition, Economy and Politics are connected to Income, GDP, Resources, President, Popularity, Ruling Government, and Leadership. The graph shows the big jump on 2020 April when is the starting month of the S value multiplication. This shows the effect of the COVID-19 and its related post-pandemic trend. The trends of OECD and non-OECD are very similar and the effect of the virus hazards causes significantly to the economic depressions.

  • This paper described design and simulation of the high-Tc superconducting (HTS) microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) on MgO substrate using $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ films that show superconductivity ${at \fallingdotseq}90$ K. Design parameters for the characteristic of the bandpass filter in Ku-band were obtained by approximate design formulas. It used parallel coupled stripline stepped impedance resonators (SIR). Microwave design system, MDS(EEsorf S/W) was used to derive the optimal pattern of the filters and to simulate frequency response. In computer-aided results, optimally designed HTS filters got good performance compared with the gold counter-parts on frequency response $S_{21}$, $S_{11}$.

  • The chiastolite bearing shale was known to occur in various coal fields in South Korea among which the Kangneung coal fields is the most outstanding in quality and quantity of chiastolite. The chiastolite occurs mostly in black shales of Sadong formation and little in shales of Hongjom and Kobangsan formations, and is most abundant in the footwall coaly shales of the Sadong coal seams. The chiastolite has been proved to be thermal contact product of the high aluminous shale that comes into contact with Kangneung granite. The distribution of chiastolite in the Kangneung coal field is irregular. The eastern part of the region contains more chiastolite than that of western part. It is believed that the difference of the grade is due to the intensity of metamorphism. The grade of chiastolite in the shale varies from few percent up to as high as 60 % in volume, and the minable reserve of the chiastolite is estimated about 4,700,000 tons. This reserves is rather concentrated in few localities such as in Jiam Mine, Jungrim Mine, Sir 1 Hang in the Whasung Mine, the second and third sections of Kangneung Mine and Umbuelri district. The chemical composition of chiastolite bearing coaly shale is $SiO_2$, 35.0%; $Al_2O_3$, 27.0%; $Fe_2O_3$, 0.29%.

A Study on Anjoon-gut Music in Daejeon - Focused on Sir Shin Seok-bong's Antaek-gut Music- (대전의 앉은굿 음악 연구 - 신석봉 법사의 안택굿을 중심으로 -)

  • Based on a field investigation of intangible cultural asset # 2, author Sir Shin Seok-bong of Daejeon Metropolitan Cityinvestigated the music of Antaek-gut, which is the base and core of Anjoon-gut, and found the following musical features: A Jang-gu(drum) and Kkoaengkwari(gong) were used to recitethe Sutra(kyungmoon) of Anjoon-gut. The Jang-gu, located on the right side, played an accompaniment role with regular beats when the Sutra was recited. The Kkoaengkwari, located on the left side, played the role of covering the caesura of the Sutra passages, so it is played with various rhythmic variations in accordance with Kojang(鼓杖). This is one way of playing Korean national classical music that has temporary caesuras, depending on the rector's bre! ath or the contents of a Sutra during the Sutra chanting, with the Jang-gu covering the pause with its variation. In other words, when being played in concert, the instruments that play the main melody are at rest while another instrument takes its turn to play the main melody as a form of prolonged sound. The rhythmic cycles of the sutras of Antaek-gut recited with this instrumental accompaniment consist of five types; a) Woemarch-jangdan (a single beat) of 4 meter by 3 bit, b) Dumarch-jangdan (two beats) of 8 meter by 3 bit, c) Saemarch-jangdan (three beats) of 4 meter by 3 bit with a fast tempo, d) Mak-gojang, uniform beats with a standardized rhythm, and e) incomplete beats deviated from the regular beats. Sir Shin Seok-bong chanted Chang (唱), a traditional native song which he called 'Cheong (淸)' with a cycle of 'Dumarch-jangdan' throughout the places of Antaek-gut. Only 'Toesonggyung' a chant for the gate that was the last location of the Antaek, was chanted with a cycle of 'Woemarch-jan! gdan'. In addition, 'Saemarch-jangdan' and 'Mak-gojang' that had comparatively faster tempos than the former two jangdans, were played without a chant when a female shaman was dancing and catching her spirit-invoking wand. The 'Saemarch-jangdan', particularly, was played while dancing began at a relatively slow tempo, then proceeded at a violent tempo and then back again to the slow tempo. This shows one of the representative tempos of our music with a slow-fast-slow tempo. The organizational tones were 'mi-la-do'-re'', and its key tones of 'mi-la-do'' were performed with perfect fourth and minor third, which was the same as those of Menari-tori. However, it did not show a typical Sigimse, an ornamental tone, of Menari-tory, whose first tone, 'mi', is vibrated and its Sigimse is gliding down from the tone 're' to 'do'. That is because the regional tone-tori of Chungcheong-do have a relatively weaker musical expression than that of Gyeongsang-do. In addition, the rhythmic types in accordance with the words of a song for the Antaek-gut music had a comparatively faster tempo than the other sutras. Also, it was only with 'Toesonggyeong' that the tone 'la' continuously appeared throughout the melody and showed 'a syllabic rhythm', while other places consisted of either a 'syncopation' or 'melismatic' rhythm. Finally, according to a brief investigation of the tone organization in accordance with each sutra, the tone 'la' was given more weight. The tone procedure showed a mainly ascending 'la-do'' and the descending 'la-mi' with minor third and perfect fourth. Also, the overall tempo proceeded with M.M.♩.=116-184, while the tempo for the Gut proceeded with M.M.♩.=120-140, which was suitable for reciting a Sutra.

Physico-mechanical, AC-conductivity and microstructural properties of FeCl3 doped HPMC polymer films

  • The transition metal salt doped solid polymer electrolyte [TSPE] were prepared with HPMC as a host polymer. The virgin and doped films were prepared by solution-casting method and investigated using wide angle X-ray scattering method. Micro structural parameters like lattice strain (g%), stacking/twin faults, the average number of unit cells counted in a direction perpendicular to the Bragg's plane (hkl) spacing of (hkl) planes dhkl, crystallite size Ds, distortion width, standard deviation were determined by whole pattern powder fitting (WPPF) method, which is an extension of single order method. It is found that the crystallite size decreases with the increase in the content of $FeCl_3$. This decrease is due to increase in localized breaking of polymer network which also accounts for the amorphous nature of the material. The filler inorganic salt $FeCl_3$ acts as plasticizer. FTIR study also confirms and justifies the interaction between the polymer and in-organic salt in the matrix. Physical properties like mechanical stability and Ac conductivity in these films are in conformity with the X-ray results.

Heat and mass transfer analysis in air gap membrane distillation process for desalination

  • The air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) process was applied for water desalination. The main objective of the present work was to study the heat and mass transfer mechanism of the process. The experiments were performed on a flat sheet module using aqueous NaCl solutions as a feed. The membrane employed was hydrophobic PTFE of pore size 0.22 ${\mu}m$. A mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the membrane mass transfer coefficient, thermal boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients, membrane / liquid interface temperatures and the temperature polarization coefficients. The mass transfer model was validated by the experimentally and fitted well with the combined Knudsen and molecular diffusion mechanism. The mass transfer coefficient increased with an increase in feed bulk temperature. The experimental parameters such as, feed temperature, 313 to 333 K, feed velocity, 0.8 to 1.8 m/s (turbulent flow region) were analyzed. The permeation fluxes increased with feed temperature and velocity. The effect of feed bulk temperature on the boundary layers' heat transfer coefficients was shown and fairly discussed. The temperature polarization coefficient increased with feed velocity and decreased with temperature. The values obtained were 0.56 to 0.82, indicating the effective heat transfer of the system. The fouling was observed during the 90 h experimental run in the application of natural ground water and seawater. The time dependent fouling resistance can be added in the total transport resistance.

  • These days, many kinds of graphical methods have been developed, and it is possible to get information directly from data. Especially, R-code (Cook and Weisberg, 1994) make it possible to draw various kinds of two and three dimensional plots, and to rotate the axis of the plots. But the maximum dimensional of the plot is three, so we can not draw plot of one response variable with more than three explanatory variables. Li(1991, 1992) has developed a method to reduce the dimension of the explanatory variables, so it is possible to draw lower dimensional plots to get information of the full explanatory variables. One of the dimension reduction method developed by Li is pHd. In this paper, we have tried to apply the pHd method for the model with multivariate response.
