The present study investigated the ageing effect on compressibility, permeability and shear strength behavior of kaolin and bentonite samples in the presence of NaCl and CaCl2 solutions. The compressibility, permeability and shear strength parameters were determined on the 60, 190, and 250 days cured samples. The results have shown that, the kaolin sample becomes more compressible in the presence Ca2+ ions with ageing. Generally, the normalized compression index values of bentonite samples increased at the end of 60 days and 250 days curing time periods. The normalized permeability value of kaolin decreased by ageing in the presence of Na+ ions almost twofold. The permeability values of bentonite increased both in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions during ageing. In the presence of Na+ ions kaolin had higher max. shear stress value than Ca2+ ions. When the max. shear stress values of 0, 60 and 190 days samples were compared, it was seen that NaCl solution had no significant effect on the shear strength of kaolin sample. However, the shear strength of kaolin increased in the CaCl2 solution during ageing. In the presence of Ca2+ ions the max. shear stress value of bentonite was higher. The results of this study have shown that ageing has significant effects on the compressibility, permeability and shear strength of kaolinitic and bentonitic clayey soils.
Various models have been proposed by several researchers for predicting the exterior RC beam-column joint shear strength. Most of these models were calibrated and verified with some limited experimental database. From the models it has been identified that the joint shear strength majorly depends on ten governing parameters. In the present paper, detailed investigation of twelve analytical models for predicting shear strength of exterior beam-column joint has been carried out. The study shows the effect of each governing parameter on joint shear strength predicted by various models. It has been observed that the consensus on effect of few of the governing parameters amongst the considered analytical models has not been attained. Moreover, the predicted joint strength by different models varies significantly. Further, the prediction of joint shear strength by these analytical models has also been compared with a set of 200 experimental results from the literature. It has been observed that none of the twelve models are capable of predicting joint shear strength with sufficient accuracy for the complete range of experimental results. The research community has to reconsider the effect of each parameters based on larger set of test results and new improved analytical models should be proposed.

In this study, material tests were performed on the masonry specimens constructed with bricks and mortar used in Korea. The specimens included two types of thickness(0.5B and 1.0B) and physical conditions (good and poor). It was shown that 1.0B specimens have 3.2~1.8 times larger shear strength than 0.5B specimens and shear strength of specimens in poor condition was 66%~38% of those in good condition. Average shear stress of masonry-infills was calculated from previous experimental studies, and relationships with failure mode, material strength of masonry, aspect ratio, and frame-to-infill strength ratio were investigated. In addition, the effects of masonry strength on the seismic performance of a masonry-infilled frame was studied using a simple example building. It can be seen that the obtained average shear stress were considerably higher than the default masonry shear strength recommended by the ASCE 41, and low values the strength of masonry does not guarantee conservative evaluation results due to the early shear failure of frame members.
In this research, we carried out finite element analysis depends on the variations such as the strength of the main bar, concrete, shear-span ratio(a/d) and existence of shear reinforcing bar. Throughout the results of FEM analysis, we were able to figure out how each variation can effect on shear performance. As the strength of concrete increased, the maximum shear force enhancement effect of each specimen was evaluated. As a result, the shear strengthening effect was 51~97% for shear reinforced specimens, and 26~44% for non-shear reinforced specimens. As the yield strength of reinforcing bars increases, the shear reinforcement effect of the specimen the specimens without shear reinforcement were 3%~6% higher than those with shear reinforcement. Theoretical and analytical values were compared using the design equations obtained from the CEB code. Theoretical and analytical values were compared using the design equations obtained from the CEB code. As a result, the error rate was the highest at 3.64 in the S1.0-C0 series and the lowest at 1.46 in the S1.7-C1 series. Therefore, the design equation of the CEB code is estimated to underestimate the actual shear strength of deep beams that are not subjected to shear reinforcement.

Direct simple shear test is an effective method to measure strength and deformation properties of soil. However, existing direct simple shear apparatus have some shortcomings. The paper has developed a novel dual stress/strain-controlled direct simple shear apparatus. The novel apparatus has the following advantages: A rectangular specimen is used that effectively avoid common issues associated with conventional cylindrical specimens, such as specimen tilting. The utilization of deformation control rods ensures a uniform shear deformation of the specimen. Vertically integrated force transmission structure is improved that avoids issues arising from changes in pivot points due to lever tilting. Incorporating this novel direct simple shear apparatus, shear strength and shear creep tests of clay were performed. Shear strength parameters and shear creep behaviors are analyzed. The results of these experiments show that the novel apparatus can measure accurately the shear rheological properties of soil. This study provides strong guidance for studying the mechanical properties of soil in engineering practice.
This study, push-off tests for the initially uncracked specimens were conducted to investigate shear transfer mechanism in reinforce concrete elements. Experimental programs for shear transfer were undertaken to investigate the effect of the concrete compressive strength, the presence of steel stirrups as shear reinforcement and the amount of steel stirrups. As the shear plane is loaded, several cracks form in a direction inclined to the shear plane, creating compression struts in the concrete. For this stage, shear is being transferred through a truss-like action produced by the combination of the compressive force in the concrete struts and the tensile force that the steel reinforcement crossing the shear plane develops. In the normal strength concrete specimens with steel stirrups, ultimate failure occurred when the compression struts crushed in concrete. In the high strength concrete specimens, on the other hand, ultimate failure occurred when the steel stirrups developed their yield strength.
This paper discusses the influence of transverse reinforcement spacing and support width of concrete wide beam on shear performance. In order to evaluate the shear performance, a total of thirteen specimens were constructed and tested. The transverse reinforcement spacing, the number of legs and support width were considered as variables. From the test results, the shear strength equation of concrete wide beam is proposed for prediction of shear strength of concrete wide beam to consider the transverse reinforcement spacing and support width. It is shown that the proposed equation is able to predict shear strength reasonably well for concrete wide beam.
Generally, in a steel girder and the concrete slab act as a composite structure, the connectors must have adequate strength and stiffness. If there are no horizontal or vertical separations at the interface, the connectors are described as rigid, and complete interaction can be said to exist under these idealized circumstances. In previous study, it was considered that the strength of stud is affected by the stud diameter, height of stud and compressive strength of concrete. The differences between previous study and this study are variables, which are shank diameter of shear connector, the spacing of shear connector, the size of specimen and the row of shear connector. So this paper, as a study on the strength of shear connector with the spacing of shear connector, size of specimen (block-out size), row of shear connector and shank diameter of shear connector resulted from the push-out specimen are conducted with ABAQUS program. It is to investigate the effects of characteristics of these factors. The load-slip relations obtained from the experiments are compared with those of analyses. From these results, the trends of stress are stress estimated and compared with push-out test.
Superior to traditional welded studs, high strength friction-grip bolted shear connectors facilitate the assembling and demounting of the composite members, which maximizes the potential for efficiency in the construction and retrofitting of new and old structures respectively. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the structural properties of high strength friction-grip bolts used in steel concrete composite beams. By means of push-out tests, an experimental study was conducted on post-installed high strength friction-grip bolts, considering the effects of different bolt size, concrete strength, bolt tensile strength and bolt pretension. The test results showed that bolt shear fracture was the dominant failure mode of all specimens. Based on the load-slip curves, uplifting curves and bolt tensile force curves between the precast concrete slab and steel beam obtained by push-out tests, the anti-slip performance of steel-concrete interface and shear behavior of bolt shank were studied, including the quantitative analysis of anti-slip load, and anti-slip stiffness, frictional coefficient, shear stiffness of bolt shank and ultimate shear capacity. Meanwhile, the interfacial anti-slip stiffness and shear stiffness of bolt shank were defined reasonably. In addition, a total of 56 push-out finite element models verified by the experimental results were also developed, and used to conduct parametric analyses for investigating the shear behavior of high-strength bolted shear connectors in steel-concrete composite beams. Finally, on ground of the test results and finite element simulation analysis, a new design formula for predicting shear capacity was proposed by nonlinear fitting, considering the bolt diameter, concrete strength and bolt tensile strength. Comparison of the calculated value from proposed formula and test results given in the relevant references indicated that the proposed formulas can give a reasonable prediction.
