  • The use of Shotcrete(Sprayed concrete) for the support of underground excavations was pioneered by the Civil engineering industry. Permanent shotcrete tunnel linings such as Single-shell, NMT(Norwegian Method of Tunnelling) have been constructed in many countries for reducing construction time and lowering construction costs instead of conventional in-situ concrete linings. Among essential technologies for successful application of Permanent Shotcrete Linings, high performance shotcrete having high strength, high durability, better pumpability has to be developed in advance. This paper presents the ideas and the first field test results of wet-mixed Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete(SFRS) with powder types cement mineral accelerator. From the results, wet-mix SFRS with powdered accelerator exhibited good early strength improvement and less rebound ratio compared to the ordinary accelerator.

  • We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopy of ~600 emission line galaxies (ELGs) in the Virgo and Ursa Major clusters to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. We derived chemical abundances of galaxies using either a direct estimation of the electron temperature or empirical calibrations. We also estimated star formation rates (SFRs) using H alpha and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) luminosities. We see no significant difference of UV colors and SFRs of ELGs between the Virgo and Ursa Major, indicating weak dependence of their star formation activity on global cluster environment. We also discuss the segregation of gas-phase element abundances in cluster environment.

  • Nuclear power has become an essential part of electricity generation to meet the continuous growth of electricity demand. A Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) was developed to extend uranium resource utilization under a growing nuclear energy scenario while concomitantly providing a nuclear waste management solution. Key questions in this scenario are when to introduce SFRs and how many reactors should be introduced. In this study, a methodology using Linear Programming is employed in order to quantify an optimized growth pattern of a nuclear energy system comprising light water reactors and SFRs. The optimization involves tradeoffs between SFR capital cost premiums and the total system U3O8 price premiums. Optimum nuclear growth patterns for several scenarios are presented, as well as sensitivity analyses of important input parameters.

  • From the early 1980's, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) has been developed as a one of the standard tunneling method in Korea. Owing to the results of many researches, the practical problems of shotcrete has been improved for a last decade. However, the excess amount of rebound still remains one of the critical problems in shotcrete technology. In order to improve for this rebound problem, recently developed cement mineral accelerator has been successfully applied to several NATM tunnels in Korea. An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the rebound characteristics of wet-mix Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) with powder types cement mineral accelerator. Mortar setting test, SEM analysis, bonding test under spring water condition and rebound test were conducted. From the result, wet-mix SFRS with cement mineral acelerator exhibited excellent bonding characteristics even spring water condition and less rebound ratio compared to the conventional liquid accelerator.

  • Steel FibreReinforced Shotcrete(SFRS) is one of the main tunnel support along with the rock bolt during the excavation and after the completion of the tunnel. In the standard qualification of the SFRS defined by Korea Highway Corporation, 28 day core specimen has to meet the compressive strength of 19.6 MPa and over 90 % fibre contents. Furthermore, for the 28 days brick shaped specimen made by shooting, flexural strength should be over 4.4 MPa and flexural toughness ratio which can be calculated from flexural toughness factor has to meet more than 68% of flexural strength. In shotcrete, accelerating agent is added for the rapid strength development. Silicate and aluminate type agents are known to develop shotcrete strength rapidly, however, has such problem to degrade the middle and long term strength. Hence, using poly carboxylic super plasticizer, it was aimed to enhance the quality of the shotcrete with the lower water-cement ratio and the same level of workability. The present paper shows the part of the field test result and its analysis.

  • This paper presents floating absorber for safety at transient (FAST) which is a passive safety device for sodium-cooled fast reactors with a positive coolant temperature coefficient. Working principle of the FAST makes it possible to insert negative reactivity passively in case of temperature rise or voiding of coolant. Behaviors of the FAST in conventional oxide fuel-loaded and metallic fuel-loaded SFRs are investigated assuming anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) scenarios. Unprotected loss of flow (ULOF), unprotected loss of heat sink (ULOHS), unprotected transient overpower (UTOP) and unprotected chilled inlet temperature (UCIT) scenarios are simulated at end of life (EOL) conditions of the oxide and the metallic SFR cores, and performance of the FAST to improve the reactor safety is analyzed in terms of reactivity feedback components, reactor power and maximum temperatures of fuel and coolant. It is shown that FAST is able to improve the safety margin of conventional burner-type SFRs during ULOF, ULOHS, UTOP and UCIT.

  • This study was aimed to verify the validity of the flexural toughness evaluation method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete(SFRS) currently being adopted by Korea Highway Corporation(KHC). Total 33 beam specimens using six different kinds of steel fiber products were prepared at tunnel construction sites and flexural toughness tests were executed at laboratory. Equivalent flexural strengths and toughness quotients were evaluated from the tests following the KHC guide iud these were compared with the quality grades determined under the guides proposed by ASTM, ITA and EFNARC. To discard the disadvantage that the toughness quotient could be influenced by flexural strength when following the KHC guide, a modification substituting the designed flexural strength for the flexural strength in the toughness quotient calculation formula was proposed to rate the quality of SFRS more adequately.

  • Recently, the research and development of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) have made progresses. However, liquid sodium, the coolant of an SFR, is chemically unstable and sodium fire can be occurred when liquid sodium leaks from sodium pipe. To reduce the damage by the sodium fire, many fire walls and fire extinguishers are needed for SFRs. LBB concept in SFR might reduce the scale of sodium fire and decrease or eliminate fire walls and fire extinguishers. Therefore, LBB concept can contribute to improve economic efficiency and to strengthen defense-in depth safety. The LBB assessment procedure has been well established, and has been used significantly in light water reactors (LWRs). However, an LBB assessment of an SFR is more complicated because SFRs are operated in elevated temperature regions. In such a region, because creep damage may occur in a material, thereby growing defects, an LBB assessment of an SFR should consider elevated temperature effects. The procedure and method for this purpose are provided in RCC-MRx A16, which is a French code. In this study, LBB assessment was performed for PGSFR IHTS hot-leg pipe according to RCC-MRx A16 and the applicability of the code was discussed.

  • Since the mid of 1990, permanent shotcrete tunnel linings such as Single-shell and NMT have been constructed in many countries for reducing the construction time and lowing construction costs instead of conventional in-situ concrete linings. Among essential technologies for successful application of permanent shotcrete linings, high performance shotcrete having high strength, high durability and better pumpability has to be developed in advance as an integral component. This paper presents the idea and first experimental attempts to increase early strength and bond strength of wet-mixed Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) in spring water condition. In order to increase early behavior of SFRS, a new approach using high-early strength cement with alkali-free liquid accelerator has been investigated. From the test results, wet-mix SFRS with high-early strength cement and alkali-free accelerator exhibited excellent early compressive strength improvement compared to the ordinary portland cement and good bond strength even under spring water condition.

  • From the early 1980's, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) has been developed as one of the standard tunnelling methods in Korea. Approximately 10 years ago, wet-mix shotcrete with sodium silicate (waterglass) accelerator was introduced and widely used to tunnel lining and underground support. However, this accelerator had some disadvantages due to the decrease of long-term strength compared to plain concrete (without accelerator) and low quality of the hardened shotcrete. In order to compensate for these disadvantages, recently developed alkali-free accelerator has been successfully demonstrated in numerous projects and applications as a new material to make tunnels more durable and safer. An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the strength behavior of wet-mix Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) with alkali-free accelerator. Compressive strength, flexural strength, and flexural toughness were measured by testing specimens extracted from the shotcrete panels. From the results, wet-mix SFRS with alkali-free accelerator exhibited excellent strength improvement compared to the conventional shotcrete accelerator.
