  • Response to nerve stimulation platform for implementing measures to detect finger movement has been functioning as an important factor.   • As light-weight embedded devices become widely used in the area of low-power networking and high-precision sensor data acquisition, support for time-critical applications becomes essential for the light-weight embedded devices. This paper addresses the accuracy issue of a software timer for small or tiny embedded devices equiped with light-weight MCUs(Micro controller units). We first explore the characteristics of overhead in a typical implementation of a software timer, and then measure the overhead through a realistic implementation. Using the measurement result, we propose an overhead compensation technique which reduces the overhead from the hardware timer-tick.

  • Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a crucial parameter for assessing environmental conditions in aquatic ecosystems. However, commercial in situ dataloggers for oxygen optodes can be relatively expensive and limited in their specifications. In this paper, we present a novel design for a DO datalogger system based on the control boards family with RP2040 MCU chipset. Our design includes two types of dataloggers: a simple logging system and a programmable system for sampling rates via magnetic switches underwater for divers. We provide detailed descriptions of the system, including the MicroPython source code and drawings to aid in construction. We also discuss the various applications of our DO datalogger system in monitoring dissolved oxygen concentration in coastal waters and assessing the benthic metabolism of aquatic ecosystems. Our DO datalogger system provides an affordable and flexible option for researchers to accurately monitor DO concentrations in aquatic environments, and thereby improve our understanding of these complex ecosystems.

  • Recently, various technologies related to IIoT are introduced continuously due to the spread of IoT and smart factory industries. This paper proposes the construction of a two-way wireless network system for monitoring plant equipment using these various technologies. The main technologies used in this thesis are design techniques for micro sensor nodes to monitor facility conditions at various sites, MQTT technology for wireless communication between local server and sensor nodes and Node-RED based design technologies, which store data collected and can be easily presented to users via wired and wireless wires. In addition, a wireless two-way camera system was also implemented in which the screen images of the site can be viewed in the situation room according to the instructions of the situation room when determining abnormal conditions.

  • The Terra-Scope system is an affordable 4-D down-hole seismic monitoring system based on independent, microprocessor-controlled sensor Pods. The Pods are nominally 50 mm in diameter, and about 120 mm long. They are expected to cost approximately $6000 each. An internal 16-bit, extremely low power MCU controls all aspects of instrumentation, eight programmable gain amplifiers, and local signal storage. Each Pod measures 3-D acceleration, tilt, azimuth, temperature, and other parametric variables such as pore water pressure and pH. Each Pod communicates over a standard digital bus (RS-485) through a completely web-based GUI interface, and has a power consumption of less than 400 mW. Three-dimensional acceleration is measured by pure digital force-balance MEMS-based accelerometers. These accelerometers have a dynamic range of more than 115 dB and a frequency response from DC to 1000 Hz with a noise floor of less than $30ng_{rms}/{\surd}Hz$. Accelerations above 0.2 g are measured by a second set of MEMS-based accelerometers, giving a full 160 dB dynamic range. This paper describes the system design and the cooperative shared-time scheduler implemented for this project. Restraints accounted for include multiple data streams, integration of multiple free agents, interaction with the asynchronous world, and hardened time stamping of accelerometer data. The prototype of the device is currently undergoing evaluation. The first array will be installed in the spring of 2006.

Development of an Automatic Sprayer Arm Control System for Unmanned Pest Control of Pear Trees (배나무 무인 방제를 위한 약대 자동 제어시스템 개발)

  • Purpose of this study was a development of a sprayer arm auto control system that could be operated according to distance from pear trees for automation of pest control. Auto control system included two parts, hardware and software. First, controller was made with an MCU and relay switches. Two types of ultra-sonic sensors were installed to measure distance from pear trees: one on/off type that detect up to 3 m, and the other continuous type providing 0~5 V output corresponding to distance of 0~3 m. Second, an auto control algorithm was developed to control. Each spraying arm was controlled according to the sensor-based distance from the pear trees. And it could dodge obstacles to protect itself. Max and min signal values were eliminated, when five sensor signals was collected, and then signals were averaged to reduce sensor's noises. According to results of field experiment, auto control test result was better than non auto control test result. Spraying rates were 69.25% (left line) and 98.09% (right line) under non auto control mode, because pear trees were not planted uniformly. But, auto control test's results were 92.66% (left line) and 94.64% (right line). Spraying rate was increased by maintaining distance from tree.

Energy Efficient Clustering Algorithm for Surveillance and Reconnaissance Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크에서 에너지 효율적인 감시·정찰 응용의 클러스터링 알고리즘 연구)

  • Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) are used in diverse applications. In general, sensor nodes that are easily deployed on specific areas have many resource constrains such as battery power, memory sizes, MCUs, RFs and so on. Hence, first of all, the efficient energy consumption is strongly required in WSNs. In terms of event states, event-driven deliverly model (i.e. surveillance and reconnaissance applications) has several characteristics. On the basis of such a model, clustering algorithms can be mostly used to manage sensor nodes' energy efficiently owing to the advantages of data aggregations. Since a specific node collects packets from its child nodes in a network topology and aggregates them into one packet to relay them once, amount of transmitted packets to a sink node can be reduced. However, most clustering algorithms have been designed without considering can be reduced. However, most clustering algorithms have been designed without considering characteristics of event-driven deliverly model, which results in some problems. In this paper, we propose enhanced clustering algorithms regarding with both targets' movement and energy efficiency in order for applications of surveillance and reconnaissance. These algorithms form some clusters to contend locally between nodes, which have already detected certain targets, by using a method which called CHEW (Cluster Head Election Window). Therefore, our proposed algorithms enable to reduce not only the cost of cluster maintenance, but also energy consumption. In conclusion, we analyze traces of the clusters' movements according to targets' locations, evaluate the traces' results and we compare our algorithms with others through simulations. Finally, we verify our algorithms use power energy efficiently.

A Study of Monitoring and Operation for PEM Water Electrolysis and PEM Fuel Cell Through the Convergence of IoT in Smart Energy Campus Microgrid (스마트에너지캠퍼스 마이크로그리드에서 사물인터넷 융합 PEM 전기분해와 PEM 연료전지 모니터링 및 운영 연구)

  • In this paper we are trying to explain the effect of temperature on polymer membrane exchange water electrolysis (PEMWE) and polymer membrane exchange fuel cell (PEMFC) simultaneously. A comprehensive studying approach is proposed and applied to a 50Watt PEM fuel cell system in the laboratory. The monitoring process is carried out through wireless LoRa node and gateway network concept. In this experiment, temperature sensor measure the temperature level of electrolyzer, fuel cell stack and $H_2$ storage tank and transmitted the measured value of data to the management control unit (MCU) through the individual node and gateway of each PEMWE and PEMFC. In MCU we can monitor the temperature and its effect on the performance of the fuel cell system and control it to keep the lower heating value to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell system. And we also proposed a mathematical model and operation algorithm for PEMWE and PEMFC. In this model, PEMWE gives higher efficiency at lower heating level where as PEMFC gives higher efficiency at higher heating value. In order to increase the performance of the fuel cell system, we are going to monitor, communicate and control the temperature and pressure of PEMWE and PEMFC by installing these systems in a building of university which is located in the southern part of Korea.

Development of Location/Safety Tracking System for Construction Site Workers by Using MEMS Sensors (MEMS 센서를 활용한 건설현장 작업자 위치/안전 정보 추적 시스템 개발)

  • Fast development of ubiquitous technology prompted the broadening of the related application area. Application of ubiquitous techniques and system into the construction sites may give us many benefits. There are always a lot of hazard situations in construction sites, and the falling is known to have the high accident rate. To prevent the falling, there has been a lot of efforts including safety education and use of safety gears. In this study, we designed, fabricated and tested a system that can monitor the worker's safety and location informations in real time by using the wireless technology of TOA and RSSI. We used ATmegal28 that is popular in the industrial equipments as MCU and NanoPan 5357 module from Nanotron and CC2500 chipset from TI for radio circuits. We also used 3-axis accelerometer and pressure MEMS sensors to obtain the environmental information, and therefore to aquire the informations of the worker's movement and altitude. We used Labview software from National Instrument to monitor and control the system. We developed the system to send the warning alarms to the server operator and the workers when the workers in the danger zone did not wear the safety hook.

Evaluation of sensor and control interface modules for greenhouse environment control (온실환경 제어를 위한 센서 및 제어 인터페이스 모듈의 성능평가)

  • 현재 상용화되어 있는 온실 환경제어시스템의 S/W 및 H/W는 서로 호환이 되지 않아 농민들이 원하는 맞춤형 복합 환경 제어시스템을 운영하는데 어려움이 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 다양한 제어알고리즘 및 장비를 적용시킬 수 있는 호환성이 향상된 온실 환경 제어인터페이스 모듈 성능평가를 목표로 한다. 센서 및 제어 인터페이스 모듈 성능평가를 위해 사용된 제어 시스템은 8 bit MCU가 적용된 전용 개발보드를 사용하였고, RS-232 통신 케이블을 사용하여 온실 환경 측정 데이터 값을 PC에서 수신할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 창개폐기, 환풍기를 사용하여 온실 내부 온/습도 환경조성을 하였다. 실험은 정오부터 제어장비를 작동시킨 후 1시간 간격으로 총 3시간 동안의 온실 내 온/습도의 변화량을 계측하였다. 3시간 중 1시간동안의 온/습도 값의 변화량을 계측한 결과 평균값은 각각 $33.21^{\circ}C$, 34.94%이었고 표준편차는 각각 $1.44^{\circ}C$, 2.74% 이었다. 제어 알고리즘은 단순한 ON/OFF 방법을 사용 하였고 총 2가지 제어장비를 사용하였으며 모두 정상 작동 하였다. 1시간동안 온실의 온도는 $30^{\circ}C{\sim}35^{\circ}C$사이를 유지하였으며, 습도는 30%~ 40% 사이로 최초 실험 목표였던 온실 내부의 온/습도 범위를 유지하였다. 이번 실험은 ON/OFF 방법의 제어 알고리즘을 사용하였지만 더욱 정밀한 온실 환경제어를 위하여 PID, 퍼지 제어 알고리즘을 추가하여 기상환경에 따른 제어범위를 더욱 세밀화 할 수 있도록 설계한다면 제어장비에 대한 효율성이 향상될 것이라 기대한다.
