The mechanism of interaction between low energy ions and biological organisms has been paid much attention recently. In order to clarify the microstructural response to low energy ion irradiation embryonic cells of Paeonia rockii L. implanted by $Fe^{1+}$ ions with the energy of 80KeV were investigated by Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning electron Microscopy(SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM). At the dose of 1$\times$1015 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$, apparent cellular damage was observed in the outer several layers of the radicle. The shape of the cells was obviously deformed from regular polygon to irregular. The cell walls became obscure. SEM micrographs showed that the surface of the radicle was etched severely. It was observed by TEM that nucleus of the implanted cell was elongated and tended to fracture. Nuclear envelope lost its integrity. The implanted $Fe^{1+}$ ions were detected by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). These observations showed that low energy ions could damage to the plant organisms with the thickness of about 30~50$\mu\textrm{m}$. The possible reasons for radiation damage in the biological organisms were discussed.

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for utilization in environment-friendly and economically outstanding CSG construction method by physical and mechanical properties of CSG materials including characteristics of uniaxial compressive strength, microscopic structure and freezing and thawing resistance in accordance with the cement content and curing time of the cement, and size of specimen. In this study, specimens with cement content of 4, 6, 8 and 10% of the total weight were, and, in order to examine the characteristics of the sizes of specimen, specimens with ${\Phi}50{\times}100mm$, ${\Phi}100{\times}200mm$ and ${\Phi}150{\times}300mm$ were manufactured to assess the features including compressive strength, microscopic structure, freezing and thawing, and degree of wet-dry. As results, it was found that with greater size specimen or contents of cement in the specimen, compressive strength, freezing and thawing resistance, and wet-dry resistance increase. Moreover, reactive products for each size of specimen were examined and it was possible to verify that some typical needle structured ettringite was generated due to blending of cement through microscopic structure analysis such as SEM and EDS analysis.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of using a Au bonding agent applied on cp-Ti and nonprecious metal-gold-ceramic system. Metallic frameworks(diameter: 5mm, height: 20mm)(N=56, n=7per group) cast in Ni-Cr alloy, Co-Cr alloy and cp-Ti were obtained using acrylic templates and airborne particle abraded with $110{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Au bonding agent was applied on wash opaque firing as intermediate layer. SEM and SEM/EDS line profile were performed on the cutting the cross-section of the metal substrate-porcelain with intermediate Au coating. Groups were tested using shear bond strength(SBS) testing at 0.5mm/min. The mean SBS values for the ceramic-Au layer-metal combination were significantly higher than those ceramic-metal combination. While ceramic-Au layer-cp-Ti combinations failed to increase bond strength instead of using a titanium bonding porcelain. The appication of using Au intermediate layer significantly improve the bond strength combination with metal-ceramic system.
The improvement of electrical conductivity of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) has been investigated by silver nano-particles coating for the purpose of lightning strike protection. Silver nano-particles in colloid were sprayed on the surface of carbon fibers, which were then impregnated by epoxy resin to form a CFRP specimen. Electrical resistance was measured by contact resistance meter which utilize the principles of the AC 4-terminal method. Electrical resistance value was then converted to electrical conductivity. The coated silver nano-particles on the carbon fibers were verified by SEM and EDS. The electrical conductivity was increased by three times of the ordinary CFRP.
In this work, on-site corrosion behavior of heat resistant tubes of T91, used as components of a superheater in a power plant for up to 25,762 h, has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD), with the objectives of studying the composition, phase distribution, and evolution during service. A multi-layer structure of oxide scale was found on both the steamside and the fireside of the tube surface; the phase distribution was in the order of hematite/magnetite/spinel from the outer to the inner matrix on the steamside, and in the order of slag/magnetite/spinel from the outer to the inner matrix on the fireside. The magnetite layer was found to be rich in pores and cracks. The absence of a hematite layer on the fireside was considered to be due to the low oxygen partial pressure in the corrosion environment. The thicknesses of the hematite and of the slag-deposit layer were found to exhibit no significant change with the increase of the service time.

The high temperature melting test for nonflammable wastes using a plasma torch was conducted. The AP-200L hollow cathode type plasma torch was installed at the pilot plasma melting furnace in NETEC. The surrogates were prepared to simulate concrete, soil and their mixture with steel. The experimental conditions such as feeding rate, the distance between melts surface and torch nozzle, torch rotation speed, gas flow rate and pressure in the furnace were decided. Basic parameters such as temperatures of cooling waters, off-gas and torch power were measured. The vitrified samples were analyzed by SEM/EDS.

The main emphasis of this study was to find an new hydrogen absorbing alloy such as Mg-Ti-Ni-H systems, and to investigate their hydrogenation properties. ($Mg_9Ti_x$)-10, 20wt%Ni-Hx systems were prepared by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying(HIMA) using Mg and Ni chips and sponge Ti. The particles synthesized were characterized by X-ray diffraction, and their morphologies were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). In addition, the crystal structures were analyzed in terms of their bright-/ dark field images and the selected area diffraction pattern(SADP) of transmission electron microscopy(TEM).
$La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) powders and pellets were synthesized by sol-gel process. The structural changes were investigated by FT-IR, CP/MAS $^{13}C$ solid state NMR spectroscopy and XRD. The particle characterization, microstructure of sintered samples, and cation composition of gel powders were studied by FE-SEM/EDS, TEM and ICP-AES. The structure refinement reveals that $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ has orthorhombic, perovskite type unit cell. The magnetic characterizations were identified through measurement of magnetic moment by VSM.

A lot of experiments and analyses have been done to determine the aging mechanism of mica-epoxy composite material used for large generator stator windings in order to estimate remaining life of the generator for last decades. After degrading artificially the mica-epoxy composite material, the surface analysis is performed to analyze breakdown mechanism of insulation in air and hydrogen atmosphere; i) In the case of air atmosphere, it is observed that an aging propagation from conductor to core by partial discharge effect and the formation of cracks between layers is widely carbonized surface. ii) In case of hydrogen atmosphere, the partial discharge effect is reduced by the hydrogen pressure (4kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Potassium ions forming a sheet of mica is replaced by hydrogen ions, which can lead to microcracks. It is confirmed that the sizes of crack by SEM analysis are 10∼20[$\mu\textrm{m}$] in length under air, and 1∼5[$\mu\textrm{m}$] in diameter, 10∼50[$\mu\textrm{m}$] in length under hydrogen atmosphere respectively. The breakdown mechanism of sttor winding insulation materials which are composed of mica-epoxy is analyzed by the component of materials with EDS, SEM techniques. We concluded that the postassium ions of mica components are replaced by H\ulcorner, H$_3$O\ulcorner at boundary area of mica-epoxy and/or mica-mica. It is proposed that through these phenomena, the conductive layers of potassium enable creation of voids and cracks due to thermal, mechanical, electrical and environmental stresses.
