  • Nano manipulator is used to manufacture Carbon NanoTube(CNT) tips. Using nano manipulator, operator attaches a CNT at the apex of Atomic Force Microscope(AFM) tip, which requires a mastery of mechanics and long manufacture time. Nano manipulator is installed inside a Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) chamber to observe the operation. This paper presents a control scheme for horizontal axes of nano manipulator via processing SEM image. Edges of AFM tip and CNT are first detected, and the position information so obtained is fed to control horizontal axes of nano manipulator. That is, a visual servoing loop is realized to control the axes more precisely in nano scale.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of steel plate oxidation with temperature in a simulated furnace. Used steel plates were a general steel and a high tensile steel. Porous media burner (PM burner) used in model furnace was made for uniform temperature profile. The surrounding temperature was controlled by adjusting the flow rate of the mixture in the combustor. Oxide layer analysis was performed using SEM image analysis and EDS line scanning. Both steel sheets showed a tendency to increase the thickness of the steel sheet surface oxide layer as the temperature increases, and it was confirmed that the flaking phenomenon in surface oxidation layer appeared when the temperature was above a certain temperature.

  • Paper is a composite consisted of various solid materials including pulp, filler and other additives. The pore is also one of components consisting the paper structure. Thus the characterization of pore structure of paper is very helpful in the understanding the structural properties of paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers pointed out the problem that the distortion of the pore structure can be occurred by the application of high pressure during mercury intrusion. Thus in this study, we tried to evaluate the potential of SEM and image analysis method as means for analyzing pore structure of the paper. The new pore analysis technique with SEM and image analysis does not require the application of high pressure, and gave better relation between the measured pore characteristics and the bulk of sheet than mercury intrusion method.

  • This study suggested a theoretical research system on the effects of the corporate social responsibility in family restaurants upon corporate image, corporate preference and revisit intention. Based on total 342 university students from the empirical research, this study confirmed the reliability and fitness of research model and verified total 4 hypotheses with structural equation modeling(SEM) by Amos program. SEM results showed that the corporate social responsibility of family restaurants had positively significant influence on corporate image(legal and economic aspect 0.203-p<0.05; philanthropy aspect 0.318-p<0.001; ethical aspect 0.203-p<0.05), and corporate image had positively significant influence on corporate preference(0.979-p<0.001) and revisit intention(0.258-p<0.05) as well. Also, corporate preference had positively significant influence on revisit intention(0.844-p<0.001). The findings of this study verified a hypothetical ground that the corporate social responsibility of family restaurants has positive effects upon revisit intention. Additionally, regarding the activity of social responsibility in the foodservice industry, it is proved that the practices in the activities of philanthropy and contribution to society rather than the practices in the legal and economic aspect had significant relations with the customer's favorable behaviors.

  • An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.

  • The scanning electron microscope (SEM) offers two-dimensional (2D) micrographs of three-dimensional (3D) objects due to its inherent operating mechanisms. To overcome this limitation, other devices have been used for quantitative morphological analysis. Many efforts have been made on the applications of software-based approaches to 3D reconstruction and measurements by SEM. Based on the acquisition of two stereo images, a multi-view technique consists of two parts: (i) geometric calibration and (ii) image matching. Quantitative morphological parameters such as height and depth could be nondestructively measured by SEM combined with special software programs. It is also possible to obtain conventional surface parameters such as roughness and volume of biomedical specimens through 3D SEM surface reconstruction. There is growing evidence that conventional 2D SEM without special electron detectors can be transformed to 3D SEM for quantitative measurements in biomedical research.
