  • Silver impregnated activated carbon fibers were post-modified using hydrochloric acid. Adsorption behaviors, SEM morphologies, and functional groups for the silver impregnated ACFs were compared with those of post-modified ACFs. Adsorption isotherms were used to characterize $S_{BET}$, the pore structure and volume of silver-activated carbon fibers (ACFs) before and after acid post-treatment. In order to the reveal the causes of the differences surface states after the samples were washed with hydrochloric acid, outer surface and pore structure were investigated by SEM. And the type and quality of various functional groups were studied from FT-IR spectra and Boehm titration method. Finally, the quantitative properties in silver contents were also examined by EDX spectra.

  • $CNT/TiO_2$ composites were prepared by using multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and various titanium alkoxide precursors. The composites were comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the prepared materials under UV irradiation, was tested using the conversion of MB from model aqueous solution. Finally, according to the results of methylene blue (MB) removal experiment, we could see that sample CTOS have better MB removal effect than samples CTIP and CTPP.

  • In this paper, we reported an outbreak of fire hazard of ballast for fluorescent lamp. The surface structure and composition of ballast coil analyzed by using metallurgical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDX). The surface of molten mark appeared columnar structure and void. EDX analysis indicated that the molten mark spectra were composed not only of the corresponding original spectra but also of several new lines.

  • Activated carbon fiber treated with iron compound (Fe-ACF) was employed for preparation of Feactivated carbon fiber/$TiO_2$ (Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$) composite catalysts. Then, the prepared Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composite catalysts were characterized by employing BET, SEM, XRD and EDX instruments. It showed that BET surface area was related to adsorption capacity for each composite. The SEM results showed that ferric compound and titanium dioxide were distributed on the surfaces of ACF. The XRD results showed that Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composite mostly contained an anatase structure with a Fe mediated compound. EDX results showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks in Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. From photocataytic degradation effect, it was observed in the organic dye (Methylene blue, MB) degradation by these composites. Different degradation effect can be attributed to the synergetic effects of photo-Fenton reaction of Fe. It was considered that the combined reactions of Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ produce powerful photo-Fenton process in the MB degradation.

  • In this study, CNT/$TiO_2$ composites derived from various titanium alkoxides and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized and characterized. Surface areas and pore volumes of the CNT/$TiO_2$ samples showed catastrophic decrease due to deposition of titanium compounds. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the MWCNTs were homogenously decorated and well-dispersed onto/into the composites without apparent agglomeration of $TiO_2$ particles. In the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, peaks of anatase and rutile phase were observed. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectra revealed the presence of major elements such as C and O with strong Ti peaks. According to the photocatalytic results, MB removal by a treatment with CNT/$TiO_2$ composites seems to have an excellent removal effect as order of CTIP, CTNB and CTPP composites due to a photolysis of the supported $TiO_2$, the radical reaction and the adsorptivity and absorptivity of the MWCNTs.

  • In this study, thin YSZ film was prepared by electrostatic spray deposition. The morphology of thin film was strongly influenced by precursor solution and substrate temperature. Especially, dense YSZ film was obtained at the substrate temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. The YSZ film growth rate was $12{\mu}m/h $ at the optimum conditions. Product film was characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and EDX.

  • Die sinking electrical discharge machining(EDM) was conducted for ceramic composite of 33 weight percent TiC based on AI$_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic matrix according to the change of current and duty factor(DF). Material removal rate(MRR) was increased as the current and the duty factor increased, but better surface mor-pholoty was obtained in the region of lower current and duty factor. From the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) photographs and the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) of the EDMed surface, EDM trace formed by one discharge spark was analyzed. Although the bending strength after EDM was highly decreased, reliability obtained by weibull analysis was increased twice. The bending strength was recovered or more by barrel polishing after EDM. From the FEM analysis of temperature for one spark, the possible melting region of AI$_{2}$O$_{3}$and TiC was obtained.

  • A series of micro- and mesoporous activated carbons were prepared from two kinds of phenolic resin using a metal treated chemical activation methodology. $N_2$-adsorption data were used to characterize the surface properties of the produced activated carbons. Results of the surface properties and pore distribution analysis showed that phenolic resin can be successfully converted to micro- and mesoporous activated carbons with specific surface areas higher than 973 $m^2/g$. Activated carbons with porous structure were produced by controlling the amount of metal chlorides ($CuCl_2$). Pore evolvement depends on the amount of additional metal chloride and precursors used. From the SEM and EDX data, copper contents were shown to be most effected by the incremental addition of metal chloride.
