The effect of compatibilizer types on the properties of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS)/polyethylene terephthalate (PET) blends was investigated. The blends were extruded by a single screw extruder attached with a Maddock mixing zone and their molded properties were examined. As a basic blend composition, a linear PPS/PET (40/60) blend was selected based on cost efficiency. Three types of compatibilizer, SEBS, modified SEBS, and modified PS were added to the basic blend to improve the properties. The thermal, rheological, mechanical properties and the morphology of the ternary blends were analyzed. The maximum mechanical properties of blends was found at 1 phr of m-SEBS or m-PS content, whose values were almost the same as the theoretical values of miscible blend system. It seemed to by the case that the partial reaction between compatibilizer and the basic blend caused the enhancement of compatibility between linear PPS and PET phases. These ternary blends would be applicable as economic linear PPS alloys.
The relationships among mechanical properties, rheological properties, and morphology by reactive extrusion based on commingled pckaging film wastes contains polypropylene (PP) pckaging film system [PP/polyethylene (PE)/aluminum (Al)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)] and Nylon packaging film system[Nylon/PE/linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE)] were investigated to improve the compatibility and toughness of these wastes using various compatibilizers such as ethylene vinylacetate (EVA), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene-graft-maleic anhydride copolymer (SEBS-g-MA), polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA), polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) , polyethylene-graft-acrylic acid (PE-g-AA) and polypropylene-graft-acrylic acid (PP-g-AA). Compared with simple melt blend system, the blends showed improvement of about $50\%$ increase in physical properties when SEBS and EVA were added. However, SEBS-g-MA thermoplastic elastomer which is highly reactive with amine terminal group of nylon, resulted in about $200\%$ increase in impact strength. This compatibilization effect resulted from the increase of interfacial adhesion and the reduction of domain size of dispersed phase in PP/Nylon blend system.

The morphology and mechanical properties of the blends of a syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) and poly-styrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene copolymers (SEBS) with various polystyrene block contents are studied. Mechanical properties, especially elongation at break and impact strength (IS), of the blend depend upon the morphology and interfacial adhesion, which in rum are affected by the viscosity ratio of constituent components and the styrene block content in SEBS. The IS of a blend was affected by the combined effect of rubber content and the interfacial adhesion. A maximum IS was found for a blend with the weight fraction of the PS block in an SEBS of 0.18. The IS of blends with smaller weight fractions of the PS block exhibited lower due to poor interfacial adhesion between SPS/SEBS in spite of a larger amount of rubber block. On the other hand, the IS of blends with larger weight fraction of the PS block becomes smaller due to lower amounts of rubber block in spite of better interfacial adhesion.

Melt blends of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylerle(PP-g-MA) and Nylon 6 were prepared to study the influence of chemical reaction between the two polymer components. By adding the MA grafted polystyrene pold (ethylene/butadiene) and polystyrene[SEBS-g-MA] as the compatible modifiers to reinforce the impact resistance, the Izod impact strength, high rate impact strength and morphology were studied. The notched Izod impact strength increased with the content of PP-g-MA and SEBS- g-MA. The energy of high rate impact strength increased as the thickness of specimen increased, while, it increased as the specimen displacement decreased. In the morphology observed by SEM, finally, we confirmed the improvement of the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion with the content of SEBS-g-MA. The continuous phase of PP-g-MA was the main cause of the modified properties.
This work presents a comparative study of the morphology and structure related properties of thermoplastic elastomer blends based on SEBS/PP/Oil and dynamically vulcanized EPDM/PP/Oil. A combination of ruthenium oxide staining and low voltage scanning electron microscopy (LVSEM) was found to be suitable for the study of morphology of these highly oil extended blends. h close analogy was found in the mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of the two systems made in an internal Brabender mixer and co-rotating turin screw extruder. The morphology of the blends, as made by the two techniques, was found to be significantly different. In the case of TPVs, the blonds made in the extruder had smaller EPDM domains and better tensile properties. In the case of SEBS, the blends made in the Brabender had more co-continuous phases and showed better tensile properties. Crystallization behavior of the isotactic polypropylene in the blends was found to be influenced by the type of rubber. Blends of SEBS/PP crystallized at a lower temperature than the TPVs. These differences were probably caused by differences in the nucleating ability of the two rubbers.

In this study, we investigated the effects of a crosslinking agent and a compatibilizer on the mechanical and rheological properties of waste PP and waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) composites. In order to simulate a commercial TPV, the component of waste PP and WGRT was fixed at 30 and 70 wt%, respectively. With the simple addition of SEBS-g-MA into the waste PP/WGRT composites, the tensile strength of the composite was decreased, whereas both the elongation at break and impact strength were significantly increased because of rubbery characteristics of SEBS-g-MA. In order to further improve the properties of the composites, the waste PP/WGRT/SEBS-g-MA composites was revulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP). As expected, mechanical properties of the revulcanized composites was generally improved. Especially, with 15 and 1 phr of SEBS-g-MA and DCP, elongation at break was highest value of about 183% because of the recross-linking of WGRT without chain scission of the main chain. It was found that complex viscosity of the revulcanized composite increased which might verify further vulcanization of the WGRT.

In this study, a series of flexible neutron/gamma shielding composites are fabricated through the doping of Gd2O3 into the matrix of SEBS with (MGd2O3: MSEBS) % from 5% to 100%. Neutron transmittance test shows an exponential attenuation with the increase of areal density of Gd, in which the transmittance T ranges from 59.1440% to 35.3026%, with standard deviation less than 2.2743%, mass attenuation coefficient 𝜇m from 0.3194 cm2/g to 0.4999 cm2/g, and half value layer-HVL value from 2.4530 mm to 1.1313 mm. Shielding efficiency of the Gd2O3/SEBS composites is basically improved in comparison with that of B4C/SEBS. The transmittance T, mass/linear attenuation coefficient 𝜇m and 𝜇, HVL and effective atomic number Zeff for the shielding of γ rays (39 keV, 59 keV and 122 keV) are measured and calculated with XCOM as well as MCX programs. Finally, plots of the three dimensional relationships between transmittance, doping amount and thickness are provided to the guidance for engineering shielding design. In summary, the Gd2O3/SEBS composite is proved to be an effective flexible neutron/low energy γ rays shielding material, which could be of potential applications in the field of nuclear technology and nuclear engineering.
Monolayers such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) have received considerable attention to reduce stiction and friction in micro-devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Various organic molecular films were investigated to obtain better understanding of their tribological behaviors and adhesion property. The organic molecular films studied in this work are: epoxysilane SAMs, octadecyltricholosilane (OST), multi-layers composed of epoxysilane SAMs, poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene](SEBS) and compound of epoxy resin and poly (paraphenylene)(EP/PPP). The pull-off forces of these films were also obtained from force-distance curves measured in static mode of operation of atomic force microscope(AFM). Tribological tests were conducted with a ball-on-flat reciprocating friction tester. The OST showed the lowest pull-off force, indicating its low adhesion property. It was revealed that, the OST, EP/PPP and the multi-layer of epoxysilane SAMs, SEBS and EP/PPP exhibited good tribological properties at the lower load (0.3 N) whereas the OST showed best performance at the higher load (1.8 N).
Solution casting films of sulfonated poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-r-butylene)-b-styrene] copolymer (sSEBS)-based composite membranes that contained different amounts of organic, nanorod-shaped polyrotaxane were annealed at various temperatures for 1 h. The films' properties were characterized with respect to their use as polymer electrolyte membranes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Different aspect ratios of polyrotaxane were prepared using the inclusion-complex reaction between $\alpha$-cyclodextrin and poly(ethylene glycol). The presence of the organic polyrotaxane inside the membrane changed the morphology during the membrane preparation and reduced the transport of methanol. The conductivity and methanol permeability of the composite membranes decreased with increasing polyrotaxane content, while the annealing temperature increased. All of the sSEBS-based, polyrotaxane composite membranes annealed at $140^{\circ}C$ showed a higher selectivity parameter, suggesting their potential usage for DMFCs.
