  • This paper deals with the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) technique for the design of helicopter nonlinear flight controllers. Since the SDRE controller requires a linear system-like structure for nonlinear motion equations, a state-dependent coefficient (SDC) factorization technique is developed in order to derive the conforming structure from a general nonlinear helicopter dynamic model. Also on-line numerical methods of solving the algebraic Riccati equation are investigated to improve the numerical efficiency in designing the SDRE controllers. The proposed method is applied to trajectory tracking problems of the helicopter and computational tips for a real time application are proposed using a high fidelity rotorcraft mathematical model.

  • The estimation of the angular rate of a satellite has been discussed. A nonlinear observer has been proposed based on the state-dependent Riccati equation method. A sufficient stability condition for the convergence of estimation error has been presented. This condition is related to a state-dependent algebraic Riccati equation. It has been derived by transforming nonlinear error dynamics into a Lipschitz nonlinearity. An observer gain is obtained from this condition. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the proposed method.

We parameterize the optimal nonlinear controller in terms of the solution matrices of an SDRE. We also give a simple algorithm to obtain the controller gain. Finally we give numerical results to show the effectiveness of the proposed near optimal traffic controller design method.

The optimal nonlinear observer gain is parameterized in terms of the solution matrix of an SDRE. This paper gives a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal observer gain. The optimal control design problem is also considered. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to illuminate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed design method.

  • In this paper, we propose a near optimal controller design method for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) of MW-class direct-driven wind turbine systems based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. Using the solution matrix of an SDRE, we parameterize the optimal controller gain. We present a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal controller gain. The proposed optimal controller can enable PMSGs to precisely track the reference speed determined by the MPPT algorithm. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal controller.

  • We introduce a new stable feedback controller eventually converges to a conventional SDRE(State Dependent Riccati Equation) based optimal (suboptimal) controller. On conventional SDRE, the optimal control input should be obtained by backward integration of the SDRE at each control point. The proposed controller is given by direct forward integration of a proposed SDRE. This fact enables fast computation and easy implementation. On concerning a state dependent system, the proposed controller may be a candidate to the conventional SDRE based optimal controller if the system is slow varying with states. Though the controller is fast and easy to implement it is not able to cope with a fast varying system. We introduce an optimality index, which indicates how far the proposed controller is deviated from the solution of the convectional SDRE. If the index escapes a ...

  • Two-wheeled balancing mobile robots are currently controlled in terms of linear control methods without considering the nonlinear dynamical characteristics. However, in the high maneuvering situations such as fast turn and abrupt start and stop, such neglected terms become dominant and greatly influence the overall driving performance. This paper addresses the SDRE nonlinear optimal control method to take advantage of the exact nonlinear dynamics of the balancing robot. Simulation results indicate that the SDRE control outperforms LQR in the respect of transient performance and required wheel torques. A design example is suggested for the state matrix that provides design flexibility in the SDRE control. It is shown that a well-planned state matrix by reflecting the physics of a balancing robot greatly contributes to the driving performance and stability.

  • This paper deals with the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) Technique for the design of helicopter nonlinear waypoint guidance controller. To generate the flight guidance through multiple waypoints, we use the trigonometric spline. The controller design and its validation is based upon a level 2 simulation helicopter model and the designed SDRE controller is applied to the trajectory tracking problems. To validate the designed SDRE controller, the simulation environment of high fidelity helicopter model is developed using three independent computers. This paper focuses on the validation the present SDRE controller through the helicopter waypoint guidance simulation.

  • State dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) control technique has been widely used in the control society. Although it solves nonlinear optimal control problems, which minimizes state error and control efforts simultaneously, it has drawbacks when it is to be applied to the real time systems in that it requires much computational efforts. So the real time system whose computational ability is limited (for example, satellites) cannot afford to use SDRE controller. To solve this problem, a hybrid controller which is based on MSDRE (Modified SDRE) and ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) has been proposed by Abdelrahman et al. (2010). We propose a hybrid controller based on SDRE and ANFIS, and apply the hybrid controller to the hardware attitude simulator to perform a HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) simulation. Through HIL simulation, it is demonstrated that the hybrid controller satisfies the control requirement and the computation load is reduced significantly. In addition, the effects of statistical properties of the ANFIS training data to the performance of the ANFIS controller have been analyzed.

  • The authors propose a nonlinear unknown input observer to estimate the angular speed of a satellite and to detect faults of reaction wheels. Input values are necessary to estimate the angular speed. Therefore, estimation errors are inevitable if faults occur in actuators or reaction wheels. Unknown input observers are useful to estimate the states of a system without being affected by unknown faults. The authors have designed a nonlinear unknown input observer by using the SDRE method and verified the proposed observer via numerical simulations. In spite of various and simultaneous faults, we have estimated the states and detected faults exactly by the proposed nonlinear unknown input observer.
