Health Behaviors, Reproductive Health History, and Sexual Behaviors of College Students (대학생의 생식건강 관련 건강행위, 생식건강력 및 성행위 실태)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey the health behaviors related to reproductive health, reproductive health history, and sexual behaviors of college students in local areas. Method: With a survey design, 792 college students from C and D areas were recruited to assess health behaviors such as smoking and alcohol drinking, as well as history of reproductive health and sexual behaviors. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire from November to December, 2007. Result: Mean age of the students was 20.8(SD=1.96) and gender distribution was 29.2% for male and 70.8% for female. Unhealthy behaviors were alcohol drinking, smoking, excessive weight loss, and irregular exercise; unsafe sex practices were experience of sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners and history of sexually transmitted disease (STD). Male students had more alcohol drinking (p=.04), smoking(p<.001), excessive weight loss(p=.01), experience of sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners(p<.001), history of STD(p=.025) compared to females. On the other hands, female students participated in regular exercise less than males(p<.001). Conclusion: College students seem to perform unhealthy behaviors related to reproductive health and less effective way of safe sex practices. Therefore, a planned education program for reproductive health promotion operated by college level is needed to assess and improve the level of reproductive health in college students.

Survey on the Knowledge of Pain and the Pain Intervention of Clinical Nurses - focus on Daegu city and Kyoungbuk province - (임상간호사의 통증지식 및 통증중재 실태조사 - 대구.경북 지역을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: A survey was done on knowledge of pain and pain interventions by clinical nurses in Deagu city and Kyoungbuk province. Method: The participants in this study were 209 nurses who worked in Daegu city, and 190 nurses who worked in Kyoungbuk province. The data were collected from August 5, to September 15, 2002. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program using numbers, percentages, averages and standard deviation with t-test and ANOVA. Result: Out of a total of 30 points on general knowledge of pain, the clinical nurses had a high score of 28, and a low of 10. The average was 18.6 (SD=3.14). Of the participants, 57.9% reported not having had any pain education and 67.9% agreed that education is a necessity. Of pharmacological interventions, Tylenol had the highest score at 3.44 out of a possible 4 points. The most frequent route for giving medication was intramuscular injection (42.6%) and for 62.7%, there was a decision by the physician for routine medication or prn. On reactions after medication, moderate relief had the highest frequency (41.9%), and for side effects after the medication, feeling of nausea was most frequent (70.4%). Of the nonpharmacological approaches to pain relief, ice bag had the highest score with 2.95 out of a possible 4. Judgement to give medication was made by the nurse for 50.1% of the participants and 647% reported a little relief from pain. Conclusion: Based upon the results, continuing education and developing a better education programs (including pain mechanism, pain assessment, pharmacological interventions and nonpharmacological interventions) are needed for systematic pain management. Nurses need a high level of knowledge of pain, to be active in pharmacological interventions and nonpharmacological interventions.

A Survey On Women's Preference of Food Color (식품색에 대한 여성의 기호조사 I (연령별))

  • To obtain a clear understanding of the degree of effect by the food color in diet habits, this study was a survey of the taste for food color. In this study, the term of investigation was tow months(May and Jun. 1992), the object was 10's∼50's women, and the sampling of them at random contain 100 person, respectively. The data-treatment was determinded by frequency, percentage, SD, Chi-square, Spearman's rank order correlation coefficient, Correlation, F-test as measured by SAS program for PC and statistical figures were obtained by GDAS. The results were as follows; 1. Food color in diet habits. : The relationship of food color with appetite by age group was showed to affect all age groups having more then 90%. The concern for food color by age group showed the lowst teenage having 56.7%, showing more then 70% except teenage. When chosen food, The most important characteristics of food was not age group but taste. In the correlation between characteristics, The correlation between color and form, taste and nutrition was showed affirmative. The difference test for the taste of food color and general color was shown, and the level of significance was chosen at 95%. 2. In the correlation between food color and the sense of emotion, The food color of depression and solitude was purple, the color of sadness and crying was white. But in case of only solitude, A statistical significance was shown. 3. In the investigation of taste for food color, the mean of taste degree was high in red, orange, yellow, yellowish green, green, white and low in blue, black. Their statistical significance was shown between colors but, was not shown between age groups. 4. In the relation of food color and associated with food, the colors of associated with food shown a vast difference with natural food color were blue(85.5%), purple(80.0%), pink(41.7%) and yellow(40.0%) but, A red color was not shown the error rate of associated with food color at all. Almost all kinds of associated with food were fruits and vegetables.

Predictors of Breast Cancer Screening Uptake: A Pre Intervention Community Survey in Malaysia

  • Introduction: Despite health education efforts to educate women on breast cancer and breast cancer screening modalities, the incidence of breast cancer and presentation at an advanced stage are still a problem in Malaysia. Objectives: To determine factors associated with the uptake of breast cancer screening among women in the general population. Methods: This pre-intervention survey was conducted in a suburban district. All households were approached and women aged 20 to 60 years old were interviewed with pre-tested guided questionnaires. Variables collected included socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge on breast cancer and screening practice of breast cancer. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed. Results: 41.5% of a total of 381 respondents scored above average; the mean knowledge score on causes and risks factors of breast cancer was 3.41 out of 5 (SD1.609). 58.5% had ever practiced BSE with half of them performing it at regular monthly intervals. Uptake of CBE by nurses and by doctors was 40.7% and 37.3%, respectively. Mammogram uptake was 14.6%. Significant predictors of BSE were good knowledge of breast cancer (OR=2.654, 95% CI: 1.033-6.816), being married (OR=2.213, 95% CI: 1.201-4.076) and attending CBE (OR=1.729, 95% CI: 1.122-2.665). Significant predictors for CBE included being married (OR=2.161, 95% CI: 1.174-3.979), good knowledge of breast cancer (OR=2.286, 95% CI: 1.012-5.161), and social support for breast cancer screening (OR=2.312, 95% CI: 1.245-4.293). Women who had CBE were more likely to undergo mammographic screening of the breast (OR=5.744, 95% CI: 2.112-15.623), p<0.005. Conclusion: CBE attendance is a strong factor in promoting BSE and mammography, educating women on the importance of breast cancer screening and on how to conduct BSE. The currently opportunistic conduct of CBE should be extended to active calling of women for CBE.

The Development of the Wind Speed Measurement System using Deacon Equation Algorithm (Deacon 방정식 알고리즘을 적용한 풍속 측정 장치 개발)

  • The feasibility study must be conducted for construction of complex for generation of electric power such as items to get permission and grid connection etc. including wind resource to construct a complex for wind power generation. Since wind power can be used by converting only around 20~40% of energy coming in that kinetic energy of wind passes through blades and driving device into electric energy, when constructing a complex, the survey of wind resource takes up the most important part. Data logger used to measure this wind energy are expressed by calculating generally electromotive that is created from a sensor, variable-type, pulse-type signal to be proper for the actual value, and most data loggers have a type without considering geographical features. Besides, in the case of Met mast that is installed to survey the wind resource, since it is installed lower than the hub height of a wind power generator due to permission matters and the economic factors, the height of wind speed by utilizing Deacon equation is compensated to revise this. In this study, a device measuring wind speed was made by using algorithm that is possible to compensate the height of wind speed according to regional features and by applying Deacon equation, and the function of data storage through SD card or RS232 communication was added as well. Besides it's possible to check data more easily with a type of graph by using LCD touch screen for the convenience of users.

Benefits, barriers, self-efficacy and knowledge regarding healthy foods; perception of African Americans living in eastern North Carolina

  • African Americans in the United States suffer from many health disparities such as obesity, diabetes or hypertension. Lifestyle factors including diet and physical activity play an important role in prevention of these health conditions. The purpose of this research project was to assess beliefs, barriers and self-efficacy of eating a healthy diet and self efficacy of shopping for foods such as whole grains or foods designated as low fat or low sodium. Additionally, the objective was to assess beliefs about healthfulness, appropriate consumption, and protective aspect of specific foods including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The assessment was done using a survey instrument developed for this study. Data collection took place at two church locations. Data were obtained from 57 African Americans, mean age 50 years old (SD 12.70) completed the survey. The majority of respondents (58.1%) were females and most (75%) had at least some college education. Generally, benefits of eating healthy foods received considerably higher scores compared to barriers of eating healthy. A belief that healthy foods would help to take care of one's body received the highest mean score while a belief that healthy foods are too expensive had the highest score from all barriers. The results showed high self-efficacy of eating and purchasing healthy foods, high awareness of knowledge regarding foods associated with disease prevention but low awareness of recommendations for fruits and vegetables. The high scores for benefits, self-efficacy and knowledge regarding eating healthy foods did not translate into the perception of intake of such foods. Most participants believed that they do not eat enough of healthy foods. Interventions design to help African Americans make dietary changes should be culturally relevant and should involved working on a community level utilizing messages that are familiar and relevant to African Americans.

Development of Evaluation Indicators for the Usability Evaluation of Smart Home App Design (스마트 홈(Smart Home) 앱 디자인의 사용성 평가를 위한 평가지표 개발)

  • Currently, people are paying more attention to smart home businesses. Therefore, the research on smart home system is becoming important. Smart Home App, which is an important component of smart home system, needs to consider the development of evaluation indicators for usability. In this regard, this paper takes smart home App as the object to develop the usability evaluation indicators of smart home App design. For this purpose, this study performed three rounds of survey by using the Delphi method. In the first round, 8 suitable areas were selected by collecting opinions from experts and analyzing the Content Validity Ratio, which was derived from literature review. Based on the results of the first survey, a total of 38 evaluation items were collected through prior research and user interview surveys. For the 38 collected evaluation items, 27 evaluation items have been selected by analyzing Average Value, Standard Deviation, Content Validity Ratio, Consultation and Convergence in the second and third rounds. The result of this study can be used as a guideline when evaluating the usability of smart home App design.

Emergency Nurses' Professional Quality of Life: Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress (응급실 간호사의 전문직 삶의 질: 공감만족, 소진, 이차 외상성 스트레스)

  • Purpose: Professional quality of life is the quality one feels in relation to their work as a helper. The purpose of this study was to describe professional quality of life among emergency nurses. Methods: A total of 15 emergency rooms were selected in three cities. Among 263 nurses working at these emergency rooms, 178 nurses consented to participate in this cross-sectional survey. Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale version 5 was used to measure compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Cluster analysis was used to classify nurses according to professional quality of life. Results: The mean scores (SD) for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress were 32.12 (5.45), 28.27 (4.28), and 28.20 (5.07), respectively. The result of cluster analysis according to standardized score of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress yielded three clusters. Over 50% of participants showed low professional quality of life. Nurses who were included in a cluster representing low professional quality of life were younger, had shorter periods of nursing experience, and perceivedlower social support than other cluster. Conclusion: Education or support programs for emergency nurses are needed to enhance their professional quality of life.

A Study of Korean Elderly on the Preference of Food according to Body Composition

  • Present study classified body composition to 4 groups categorized as sarcopenic obesity (SO), sarcopenic nonobesity (SNO), nonsarcopenic obesity (NSO), and nonsarcopenic nonobesity (NSNO) and then was performed to investigate that body composition associated with food consumption frequency as well as MS in individual aged 60 years or older. Body mass index and an appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) divided by weight (Wt) of < 1 standard deviation (SD) below the sex-specific mean for young adults were used to define obesity and sarcopenia. A total of 1,433 subjects (658 male and 775 females) 60 years or older from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2010 participated in this study. One of the interesting findings was that the association of the prevalence of MS with body composition was higher in women than man. Other finding was that there were different food frequency and food preference according to 4 different groups between men and women. In addition, men are much more influenced by food than women. In conclusion, body composition changes were more related with food frequency in elderly men (60 years or older) than women. Women had a higher prevalence of MS than men, suggesting early nutritional intervention in elderly women may help them prevent body composition changes.

An Investigation of Obesity, Anemia and Food-life- attitude for the Middle Aged Persons in Kimchun (김천지역 중년 성인의 비만.빈혈과 식생활 태도 조사)

  • This study was done to investigate the correlation between food-life-attitude and anemia as well as obesity. 154 people living in Kimchun in the forties or fifties were selected for this study as subjects from January to February, 1991. The data analysis was made by way of frequency, percentage, X, SD and pearson correlation using SAS package of PC. The summarized results were as follows. The survey on food-life-attitude showed that 32.5% of the subjects had a good attitude. The average score of the subject's food-life-attitude was 31.3. 34.4% of the subjects were obesity. The significant items positively correlated to obesity were a regular breakfast, the settled amount of meal intake, concerns about food combination, an effort to correct an unbalanced diet, the presence of remained meal, an appetite, a diet considered to health, the use of instant foods and daily intakes of green-yellow vegetables, protein foods and seaweeds. 9.1% of the subjects were anemia. The significant items positively correlated to anemia were an effort to correct an unbalanced diet, a sweet meal, an appetite, attentions to food additives, a diet considered to health, the use of instant foods, daily intakes of green-yellow vegetables and seaweeds and a regular meal.
