  • It is necessary to estimate the groundwater recharge rate properly to evaluate the reasonable development amount of groundwater in a specific site. A small basin in Wicheon River Basin located in the Province of Kyungsangbuk-Do is selected to calculate the groundwater recharge rate. Average annual groundwater recharge rates are calculated from 1992 to 1997 because wet and draught year are contained during this period. In the calculation, baseflow separation method and SCS-CN method are applied to this area. As a result of estimation by baseflow separation method, the value of groundwater recharge ratio is varied between 11.9% and 18.7%. The average annual recharge rate is 14.5%. The average annual recharge rate calculated by SCS-CN method is varied between 7.9% and 20.9%. The average annual recharge rate in the calculation period is 15.1%. The results show that the average annual recharge amount from infiltration in the study basin is 141.6mm and 147.4mm in each estimation method. It appears that the average annual recharge amount calculated for the long period containing wet and draught year by the two methods is useful for groundwater development.

  • The methodology developed by Soil Conservation Service for determination of runoff value from precipitation is applied to estimate the precipitation recharge in the Pyungchang river basin. Two small areas of the basin are selected for this study. The CN values are determined by considering the type of soil, soil cover and land use with the digital map of 1:25,000. Forest covers more than $94{\%}$ of the study area.. The CN values for the study area vary between 47 in the forest area and 94 in the bare soil under AMC 2 condition. The precipitation recharge rate is calculated for the year when the precipitation data is available since 1990. To obtain the infiltration rate, the index of CN and five day antecedent moisture conditions are applied to each precipitation event during the study period. As a result of estimation, the value of precipitation recharge ratio in the study area vary between $15.2{\%}\;and\;35.7{\%}$ for the total precipitation of the year. The average annual precipitation recharge rate is $26.4{\%}\;and\;26.8{\%}$, meaning 377.9mm/year and 397.5mm/year in each basin.

  • This study searched the criterion of AMC with respect to the rainfall amount for the periods of antecedent 5 to 2 days. This criterion was decided as the rainfall amount with which the frequency of the observed CN(I) and CN(III) events being categorized as the true CN(I) and CW(III) become highest. Among four cases considered, the cases with antecedent 4 and 5 days provided a reasonable results, but the others not due to limited rainfall events available. For both cases with antecedent 4 and 5 days, the frequency of AMC-II increases, but that of AMC-III decreases significantly to become a more reasonable distribution. Among the cases with antecedent 4 and S days, the latter seems to be better as the occurrence of AMC-II and the relative frequency of CN(I) are higher. If adopting the rainfall amount of antecedent 5 days for the AMC, the criteria for AMC-I and AMC-III for the Jangpyung subbasin becomes 22 mm and 117 mm, respectively.

  • This study aims to evaluate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hourly hydrological modeling performance and compare it with daily SWAT modeling parameters. For the Byeolmicheon catchment ($1.17km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongancheon watershed and total 18 storm events measured during 3 years (2011-2013), the hourly SWAT was calibrated and validated using the Green and Ampt (G&A) infiltration equation. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) of hourly SWAT discharge were 0.81 and 0.73 respectively, and the most sensitive parameter was soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) and calibrated with the average value of 0.075 mm/hr. In addition, the hourly SWAT simulation by G&A was compared with the daily SWAT simulation by SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method for the whole 3 years period. The houlrly G&A results showed $R^2$ and NSE of 0.71 and 0.50, and the daily SCS-CN results were 0.71 and 0.66, respectively. The SOL_K by daily SCS_CN method was calibrated at 75.5 mm/hr, 1,000 times greater than the hourly G&A method. The next sensitive parameters for the hourly simulation were lag time of lateral flow (LAT_TIME) and lag time of surface runoff (SURLAG).

  • The SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method has been practically applied for estimating the effective precipitation. The CN is used to be determined according to the land use condition based on the US standard. However, there are two distinctive differences between U.S. and Korean land use conditions: mountainous (forest) and rice paddy area that cover more than 70% of the Korean territory. The previous work proposed to use 79 for rice paddy area, regardless of the soil type. Because US SCS's goal was originally to increase crops, the SCS classification standard provides only for woods and there are no criteria to distinguish the wood and forest. To determine the CN for forest, alternatively the U.S. Forest Service criteria have been employed in practice considering hydrologic condition class. In this study, we investigated the change of the forest CN using the observed rainfall - runoff data within the target area. The results indicated that the CN for forest was suitable for HC=1, and the corresponding CNs were redetermined between 54 and 55.

  • For the simulation of flow phenomenon that calculate basin outflow, it is required to estimate effective precipitation which contributes to direct runoff. This paper is focused on using detailed soil map which is one of the data required to estimate effective precipitation by SCS CN method. Korean detailed soil map must be reclassified as SCS hydrologic soil group when it is applied to SCS CN method. In this study, Korean detailed soil maps which are reclassified as SCS hydrologic soil group by the methods of Her and Jung (1987) and Jung et al. (1995) are applied to flow simulation and the results are analyzed. The study sites are Wichon watershed and Pyungchang river basin which are studied by International Hydrological Program(IHP). HEC-1 and WMS v6.1 are used to simulate flow phenomenon and calculate geographic parameters. The difference of flow analysis results from each soil reclassification method is different from each sites. But the results of flow analysis approximate observed data by using Jung et al. (1995) method more than Her and Jung (1987) method.

  • The validity of the estimate of runoff depth and peak runoff by the basin runoff curve numbers(CN-II for AMC-II condition and CN-III for AMC-III condition) obtained from hydrologic soil-cover complexs is investigated by making use of the observed curve numbers(median curve number and optimum curve number) computed from rainfall-runoff records. For gaged basins the median curve numbers are recommended for the estimation of runoff depth and peak runoff. For ungaged basins, found is that for the estimate of runoff depth CN-III is adequate and for the peak runoff CN-II is adequate. Also investigated is the variation of curve numbers during rainfall, which is turned out to improve the estimates of both depth and peak of runoff.

  • The determination of soil parameters is important in predicting the simulated surface runoff using either a distributed or a lumped rainfall-runoff model. Soil characteristics can be collected using remote sensing techniques and represented as a digital map. There is no universal agreement with respect to the determination of a representative parameter from a gridded digital map. Two representative methods, i.e., arithmetic and predominant, are introduced and applied to both FLO-2D and HEC-HMS to improve the model's accuracy. Both methods are implemented in the Yongdam catchment, and the results show that the former seems to be more accurate than the latter in the test site. This is attributed to the high conductivity of the dominant soil class, which is A type.

  • It is one of the most important factors to determine the effective rainfall for estimation of flood hydrograph in design schedule. SCS curve number (CN) method has been frequently used to estimate the effective rainfall of synthesized design flood hydrograph for hydraulic structures. But, it should be cautious to apply SCS-CN originally developed in U.S.A to watersheds in Korea, because characteristics of watersheds in Korea and cropping patterns especially like a paddy land cultivation are quite different from those in USA. New CN method has been introduced. Maximum storage capacity which was herein defined as Umax can be calibrated from the streamflow data and converted to new CN-I of direst condition of soil moisture in the given watershed. Effective rainfall for design flood hydrograph can be estimated by the curve number developed in the watersheds in Korea.
