  • The foaming of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) using supercritical $CO_2(scCO_2)$ was studied. In order to improve the melt strength, PBS was modified using the reactive compounding technique. Rapid decompression of $scCO_2$-saturated PBS at a temperature above the depressed $T_m$ yielded expanded microcellular foams. The resulting foam structure could be controlled by manipulating process conditions. Experiments varying the foaming temperature while holding other variables constant showed that higher temperatures produced larger cells and reduced cell densities. Higher saturated pressures led to higher nucleation densities and smaller cell sizes. Decreasing the rate of depressurization permitted a longer period of cell growth and therefore larger cells were obtained.

  • Background Sasang constitutional medicine explains that the difference in eating habits depending on constitutional characteristics affects health status. The aim of the present study is to investigate research trend on Sasang constitution (SC) and eating habits. Method Research papers from 2010 to 2019 on SC and eating habits were searched in domestic and international 5 databases. As a result, 11 clinical studies related to the SC and eating habits were finally selected. From the finally selected research papers, subjects, study period, constitutional diagnostic tools used for studies, and eating habit evaluation tools were investigated. Results In a total of 11 research papers conducted as clinical studies regarding SC and eating habits for the recent 20 years, eating speed and meal size items were most frequently used, followed by the regularity of meals, unbalanced diets, breakfast. Taeumin was more likely to eat fast, eat a lot of food, or overeat while Soeumin was less likely to overeat or they eat less food. There was no significant difference in the regularity of meals depending on constitution, but each study showed different tendency. Conclusion This study closely reviewed Sasang constitutional eating habit items from the precedent studies to select the major items of eating habits as a constitutional health management index. The results of this study will contribute to selections of items and the development of tools to measure constitutional eating habits related to health status.

  • This research aimed to provide a profound description of the practices of social media users in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), specifically the users of Facebook® (FB) and Snapchat® (SC), the reasons for these practices, decisions made, and the people involved. Such research would be of significant help to designers and policymakers of social media applications in understanding user practices when using social media applications and the reasons for such practices in the KSA. This better comprehension would be of significant help in improving current applications and creating new ones. According to the data analysis, there was a clear preference for SC over FB in the KSA. Most participants with SC accounts were described as very active users, accessing their accounts at least once a day compared to FB users. The users were led by this high preference for SC to create new words derived from the name of the application and use them in daily life. We showed our experience of carrying out a study in which the main objective was to collect factual empirical data from participants about their daily usage of social media applications while considering the unique cultural settings in the KSA. Mixed quantitative and qualitative methods were used to triangulate the data, increasing its trustworthiness and validity. Multiple perspectives were obtained using various data collection methods. Therefore, conclusions would not be confounded with limitations of any particular methodology or with conditions of any collection rounds. This research would constitute a valuable guide for researchers intending to use methods with male and female informants from different cultures, preparing them for potential challenges and suggesting possible solutions.

  • Probiotics are microorganisms that can benefit host health when ingested in a live state, and lactic acid bacteria are the most common type. Among fungi, Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) is the only strain known to have a probiotic function with beneficial effects on colitis; however, information on other probiotic yeast strains is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to discover yeast strains expressing intestinal anti-inflammatory activities by exhibiting probiotic properties in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mice model. Nuruk (Korean traditional fermentation starter) containing various microbial strains was used as a source for yeast strains, and S. cerevisiae 28-7 (SC28-7) strain was selected with in vitro and in vivo characteristics to enable survival in the intestines. After 14 days of pretreatment with the yeast strains, DSS was co-administered for six days to induce colitis in mice. The results revealed that the disease activity index score was lowered by SC28-7 treatment compared to the DSS group, and the colon length and weight/length ratio were recovered in a pattern similar to that of the normal group. SC28-7 administration significantly reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum and modified the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1β, transforming growth factor-β, and interferon-γ) and proteins involved in gut barrier functions (mucin 2, mucin 3, zonula occludens-1, and occludin) in colon tissues. These results indicate that SC28-7 attenuates DSS-induced colon damage and inflammation, supporting its future use as a probiotic yeast for treating and preventing intestinal inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease.

  • Weeding effect was investigated based on the leaf stages to several different herbicide treatments for an integrated weed management of herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzoides to ACCase and ALS inhibitors in a rice field. Efficacy of soil-applied herbicide treatments before resistant E. oryzoides occurred was very effective. Pentaxazon 5% SC showed over 98% of weeding effect although E. oryzoides were emerged 31 days after the treatment. Until the leaf stage of 2.5, five herbicides, azimsulfuron carfenstole 1.05% GR, bensulfuron-methyl benzobicyclone mefenacet 24.52% SC, bensulfuron-methyl fentrazamide 7% SC, bensulfuron-methyl mefenacet oxadiargyl 21.6% SC and mefenacet pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 3.57% GR showed perfect weeding effect. Benzobicyclone mefenacet penoxulam 21.5% SC and mefenacet pyrazosulfuron-ethyl 3.57% GR were effective at the leaf stage of 3.0. It is very important to select the right herbicides for timing and their systematic application for controlling of E. oryzoides resistant to ACCase- and ALS-inhibitors.

  • The steel-plate concrete(SC) is used in a form of module assembly construction in the outer wall of nuclear-power plant and LNG containment. Since the steel-plate concrete modules are generally manufactured from the plant, the weight of SC has significantly effect on the total construction cost in the aspect of shipment. Therefore, the use of lightweight aggregates concrete(LWAC), which fill the inside of SC module can be a solution. However, the amount of used lightweight aggregates(LWA) is limited in the use of current concrete mixing process due to the concrete quality problems and it also determines the allowable minimum density of LWAC. In this research, the preplaced casting method is applied because of increasing the volume fraction of LWA significantly, which results from the producing process of pre-packing the LWA in the formwork and filling the interstitial voids between LWA using cement paste grout. The density and compressive strength of selected preplaced LWAC were $1,600kg/m^3$ and 30MPa and it was applied for the mock-up specimens of SC panel. It was used for the 3-point bending test for evaluating its structural performance. The results show that the preplaced LWAC can reduce the density of concrete with the adequate mechanical and structural performance.

  • Objective: We investigated the efficacy of a 12-week supplementation of soy isoflavone with L-carnitine on the development of obesity in high fat-induced obese C57BL/6J mice, which are known as a good model of diet-induced obesity. Methods: We measured body weights, adipose tissue mass, serum/liver lipid profiles and fat cell size/number in C57BL/6J mice fed diets containing either low fat (4%) or high fat (35%), or high fat supplemented with soy isoflavone powder containing 10% isoflavone and L-camitine for 12 weeks. Results: Body weight gain, abdominal adipose tissue and liver weight were lower by 31% 78% and 31.4% respectively, in mice on high fat diet containing soy isoflavone+L-carnitine (SC mixture) compared with high fat diet group. Also, SC mixture improved serum lipid profiles such as total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and liver lipid profiles such as total lipids and TG. As subsequent results, this SC mixture prevented high-fat diet from accumulating TG in the liver. The size of fat cell was also significantly decreased in SC mixture fed mice. At the end point of this experiment, our results showed that feeding with soy isoflavone for 12 weeks finally increased camitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT 1) activity through elevating the level of CPT1 expression. Conclusions: This study suggests that long-tenn supplementation with dietary soy isoflavone and L-carnitine is more synergistically beneficial for the suppression of high-fat diet induced obesity by inhibiting liver TG accumulation and the gain in abdominal adipose tissue weight than that with soy isoflavone. The antiobesity effects of SC mixture might be attributed, at least in part, to the induction of fatty acid catabolism by soy isoflavone, genistein.

  • The isolated strain, SC2-1 was Gram-positive, catalase positive, facultatively anaerobic, oxidase negative, motile and small rods. The strain utilized sucrose, dextrose, fructose, mannitol and maltose as a sole carbon and energy source and sodium chloride required for the bacteria growth. The radical scavenging activity of the culture supernatants was determined by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method. This bacterium was identified based on cellular fatty acids analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing then named Exiguobacterium sp. SC2-1. The optimum culture conditions for production of antioxidant were $25^{\circ}C,$ pH 7.8 and NaCl concentration were 4%. The modified optimal medium compositions were maltose 2.5% (w/v), yeast extract 1.5% (w/v) and $KH_2PO_4$ 0.05% (w/v). Free radical scavenging activity of under optimal culture conditions were 93%.

  • We investigated whether or not Schisandra chinensis (SC), a traditional herbal medicine, has protective effects against alcohol-induced fatty liver and blood alcohol clearance. Two tests focused on acute intoxication and chronic ethanol treatment were carried out. For the chronic ethanol treatment test, rats were fed ethanol by intragastric administration everyday for 8 weeks to induce alcoholic fatty liver. Ethanol treatment significantly increased blood alcohol concentration at 90 min after acute ethanol intoxication. Compared with the two ethanol-treated groups, rats administered ethanol along with SC extracts showed an approximately 13% increased blood alcohol clearance rate at 360 min. Chronic ethanol treatment significantly increased serum and hepatic triglyceride (TG) levels, and caused fatty degeneration of liver. Ethanol treatment also elevated the serum total-cholesterol (TC) level. However, after feeding of ethanol plus SC extracts, ethanol-induced elevation of hepatic TG levels reversed, whereas elevation of serum TG and TC levels was not observed after treatment with SC extracts. Ethanol treatment significantly increased ${\gamma}$-GT, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase activities after 8 weeks. Compared with the ethanol-fed group, rats administered ethanol plus SC extracts for 4 weeks showed attenuated fatty degeneration as well as decreased hepatic function test values. SC administration also significantly increased intracellular lipid accumulation in hepatocytes and reduced steatosis score and hepatic TG levels, as measured by biochemical and histolopathological analyses. Our results indicate that the protective effects of SC are accompanied by a significant decrease in hepatic TG levels, thereby suggesting SC has the ability to prevent ethanol-induced fatty liver, by reducing hepatic TG and enzyme levels in alcoholic rats.

  • Twenty one strains strongly producing protease were isolated from Korean traditional Cheonggukjang. Eight strains selected by sensory evaluation on Cheonggukjang prepared with isolated strains were identified with based on biochemical properties a and 16S rDNA sequencing. Identified strains were Bacillus subtilis MB4, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens A1, A2, B1, MC1, SB2, SC1, and SD1. Protease activities, important strain selection factor, were higher in Cheongjukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 (179.6 Unit) and B. amyloliquefaciens SB2 (201.9 Unit) than commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (97.9 Unit). Sensory evaluation revealed Cheonggukjang prepared with B. subtilis MB4 had flavor very similar to commercial traditional Cheonggukjang. Cheonggukjang prepared with B. suhtilis MB4 (0.0006 Pa s) and commercial traditional Cheonggukjang (0.0002 Pa s) revealed lower viscosities than those of Cheonggukjang prepared with B. amyloliquefaciens SB2, MC1, B1, A1, SD1, A2, and SC1 (0.006 to 0.008 Pa s at 1001/s. Results show Cheonggukjang could be prepared using single strain of B. subtilis MB4, maintaining high protease activity and very similar sensory and viscosity qualities with those of commercial traditional Cheonggukjang.
