  • The non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is one of the fledging paradigms which next generation radio access technologies are sprouting toward. The NOMA with superposition coding (SC) in the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver comes with many desirable features and benefits over orthogonal multiple access (OMA) such as orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) adopted by Long-Term Evolution (LTE). In this paper, we study the recent research trends on NOMA in 5G systems. We discuss the basic concept of NOMA and explain its aspects of importance for future radio access. Then, we provide a survey of the state of the art in NOMA for 5G systems in a categorized manner. Further, we analyze the NOMA performances with numerical examples; and provide some avenues for future research on NOMA on a set of open issues and challenges.

  • The growing interest towards ultra-wideband (UWB) communications stems from its unique features such as baseband operation, ample multipath diversity, and the potential of enhanced user capacity. But since UWB has to overlay existing narrowband systems, multiple access has to be achieved in the presence of narrowband interference (NBI). However, existing baseband spreading codes for UWB multiple access are not flexible in handling NBI. In this paper, we introduce two novel spreading codes that not only enable baseband UWB multiple access, but also facilitate flexible NBI cancellation. We construct our codes using a single carrier or multiple carriers (SC or MC), which can be implemented with standard discrete-cosine transform (DCT) circuits. With our SC/MC codes, NBI can be avoided by simply nulling undesired digital carriers. Being digital, these SC/MC codes give rise to multiband UWB systems, without invoking analog carriers. In addition, our SC/MC codes enable full multipath diversity, and maximum coding gains. Equally attractive is their capability to reduce the number of interfering users, with simple matched filter operations. Comprehensive simulations are also carried out to corroborate our analysis.

  • The fifth generation (5G) mobile communication has been more commercialized worldwide. One of the promising 5G technologies is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We present the achievable sum rate of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with correlated superposition coding (SC). Then this paper investigates the impacts of correlation on the achievable sum rate of correlated SC NOMA. It is shown that the achievable sum rate of correlated SC NOMA is greater than that of standard independent SC NOMA, for the most of the values of the power allocation factor over the meaningful range of the user fairness. In result, correlated SC could be a promising scheme for NOMA.

  • Recently, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed sidehaul system to cope with the explosively increasing mobile data traffic. The sidehaul system is based on single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FMDA) due to its low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Also, antenna array is designed to support multiple input multiple output (MIMO) in a restricted space. In this paper, we design the antenna array about uniform linear array (ULA), uniform circular array (UCA) and uniform planar array (UPA), and analysis the performance in sidehaul system. In addition, we propose the novel hybrid receiver full suppression cancellation (FSC) to reduce the interference from neighbor cell in sidehaul system. The proposed receiver can suppress and cancel the interference by combining interference rejection combining (IRC) with successive interference cancellation (SIC).

  • We present the power of the correlated superposition coding (SC) in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). This paper derives closed-form expressions for the total allocated power with the constant total transmitted power. It is shown that the total allocated power is the function of a correlation coefficient. In result, the correlated SC NOMA should be designed with consideration of the correlation coefficient.

  • This paper aims to improve the design of iterative detection and decoding(IDD) based on the soft interference cancellation with minimum mean squared error(SC-MMSE) detector, which shows low performance compared to the maximum a posteriori(MAP) detector. By means of extrinsic information transfer(EXIT) chart analysis, such low performance may be attributed to that the "pure"(original) turbo principle is not always best for IDD. Thus, we propose a new IDD architecture based on the SC-MMSE detector which uses new a priori information. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed IDD is very close to that of IDD based on the MAP detector.

  • Due to the frequency offset, interchannel interference (ICI) is occurred in the received symbols of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The ICI self-cancellation (ICI-SC) technique appropriately adjusts the subchannel signal assignment of the OFDM symbols, thereby canceling the interference caused by other subchannels. The conventional adjacent symbol repetition (ASR) method can reduce the interference caused by remote subchannels. However, it may not mitigate or even increases the ICI produced by some nearest subchannels. To solve the problem, a new ASR based ICI-SC technique is proposed and its performance is analyzed in this paper. Here, a t-parameter obtained by the interference coefficients of 3 successive subchannels is applied. As a result, the proposed method has the same capability to reduce the influence of remote subchannels. However, it can reduce the ICI caused by the nearest subchannels significantly.

  • A recently developed spatial differencing scheme, Linear Characteristic (LC) scheme is compared with some traditionally used schemes such as Step Difference (SD), Diamond Difference (DD), and Step Characteristic (SC) scheme by analyzing the truncation error calculated numerically in slab geometry. Those four candidate schemes are applied to one simple source sink problem and two criticality problems (one is calculation of multiplication factor and the other is slab critical half thickness). The calculated results are then examined by some equitable measures of error. It is concluded that the LC scheme is terribly more powerful than any other candidate scheme that has been prevalent up to the present time. Moreover, the LC scheme estimates integral parameter such as multiplication factor and critical half thickness much more efficiently than SD or SC scheme. This is due to the fact that the fortuitous error cancellation, which occurs when the deviations of cell average flux are summed over the whole gamut of spatial meshes, happens much more favorably to the LC scheme.

  • Iterative decision feedback equalizer (IDFE) is a recursive equalization technique that can help to achieve an additional performance gain for the system by combining iterative channel decoding and interference cancellation. In a single carrier-based system, the intersymbol interference (ISI) is a critical problem that must be resolved since it causes frequency selective fading. Based on the idea of sharing the estimated information in the process of iteration, IDFE is considered as an efficient solution to improve the robustness of the system performance on the ISI channel. In this paper, the IDFE is applied on single carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) system to evaluate the performance under ISI channel. The simulation results illustrate that IDFE helps to improve the performance of the SC-FDMA system, especially with long delay spread channels.
