To investigate organoclay, high styrene resin masterbatch (HSR), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), and polystyrene (PS) as reinforcing materials for the improvement of the abrasion resistance of poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS), SBS/organoclay nanocomposites, SBS/HSR, SBS/HIPS, and SBS/PS blends were prepared. The effect of organoclay and blends on the abrasion resistance and mechanical properties of SBS was investigated. Even though intercalations of organoclay are observed for SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites and not for SBS/Cloisite 30B composites, the abrasion resistance of SBS/Cloisite 20A nanocomposites is worse than that of SBS/Cloisite 30B composites. When SBS was blended with HSR, HIPS and PS, the abrasion resistance of the blends increases with increasing of HSR, HIPS and PS content from 0 to 20 wt%.
We have investigated the output characteristics of a Nd:YAG oscillator with a Stimulated Brillouin Scattering phase conjugation mirror (SBS-PCM). FC-75 is used as an SBS gain medium and Cr:YAG (T=50%) as a Q-switcher. The SBS-PCM consists of an SBS-cell and a simple plano-convex focusing lens system. For the case of not using a Q-switcher, an SBS-cell doesn't work as a phase conjugation mirror. For the case of using a Q-switcher, the energy characteristics remains nearly the same whether using the SBS-cell or not using it. The pulse width is reduced from 50 ns to 40 ns by an SBS-PCM. When the SBS-cell is used with a Q- switcher, the SBS-cell works very well as a phase conjugation mirror and its beam-profile is improved dramatically. And in order to explain the progression of beam-profile, we propose a simple model based on the nonlinear reflectivity of the SBS-PCM, whose reflectivity is dependent on the pumping intensity at the focal plane.
The main objective of this work was studying the influence of paraffin oil(PO) on the adhesion properties at low temperature in styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS) copolymer and crumb rubber(CR) modified asphalt. The temperature susceptibility of SBS/CR asphalt and PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were measured by penetration and softening point. Adhesion properties at low temperature and dispersion of modifiers in PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends were evaluated by universal test machine and florescence microscopy, respectively. The adhesion properties of PO/SBS/CR/asphalt blends at low temperature increased in the proportion of SBS contents with both 5 and 10 wt % of paraffin oil. Results showed that the maximum tensile adhesion strength and toughness energy at $-20^{\circ}C$ were obtained when PO and SBS contents were 10 wt % and 6 wt %, respectively. The addition of PO is effective for enhancing the flexibility of SBS/CR/asphalt blends and leads to the increase of toughness at low temperature.
This study investigated the physicochemical properties and antioxidative activity of soymilk added with buckwheat sprout (SBS), and sensory properties of SBS were analyzed with control soymilk (CS). Moisture content decreased while protein, ash, and lipid contents increased according to content of buckwheat sprout. Solids content and viscosity tended to increase with addition of buckwheat sprout from 0% (CS) to 2.5% (2.5SBS), 3.5% (3.5SBS), and 4.5% (4.5SBS). SBS was found the significant pH drop from 7.08 to 6.43, 6.34, and 6.21. Suspension stability of soymilk slightly decreased with addition of buckwheat sprout. Hunter's color value L of SBS decreased while a and b values increased in comparison with CS. Rutin content was measured 23.78 mg/100 g (2.5SBS), 39.68 mg/100 g (3.5SBS), and 44.80mg/100 g (4.5SBS). Vitamin C content in SBS was higher than CS. Daidzin content increased as buckwheat sprout was added. Total phenolic content increased from 100.95 mg/100 g (CS) up to 315.71 mg/100 g (4.5SBS). For free radical scavenging activity, SBS was significantly higher than CS. In conclusion, SBS can be used as a functional food with higher amounts of rutin, vitamin C, total phenolics, and daidzin. 2.5SBS and 3.5SBS also showed better overall quality characteristics.
This paper presents the characteristics of viscoelastic properties and fatigue performance of SBS modified asphalt mixtures depending on the aggregate gradation. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and uniaxial tensile creep tests are performed to analyze the thermomechanical behavior of asphalt binders and mixtures, respectively. Uniaxial tensile fatigue tests for seven different asphalt mixtures are conducted to evaluate the effects of aggregate gradations and SBS modifier on the fatigue performance of the mixtures. DSR and uniaxial tensile creep tests results show that the SBS modified asphalt mixtures have better rutting resistance than the unmodified mixtures at high temperatures regardless of the aggregate gradations used. Fatigue factor $G^*sin\delta$ in Superpave binder specification may not be adequate for evaluating the fatigue Performance of asphalt mixtures. It is observed from uniaxial tensile fatigue tests that SBS modified asphalt mixtures compared to unmodified mixtures have ten times longer fatigue lives regardless of the aggregate gradations(dense, SMA, and Superpave gradations) used in the mixtures. The better fatigue performance of the SBS modified mixtures is observed even after long-term aging process. The effect of aggregate gradations on the fatigue performance is not as significant as the SBS modifier. The cellulose fiber added in the SMA mixture has negligible effects on the viscoelastic Properties and fatigue performance of the mixture, but is effective in reducing draindown. Although the SBS modified asphalt binder is used, it may be necessary to add the cellulose fiber into the SMA mixture to prevent the draindown.
In this study, styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS)-styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt was prepared for waterproof-sheet to measure its properties including softening point, penetration, low temperature flexibility, viscosity and adhesion. Then the properties of SIS-SBS modified asphalt imparted with self-healing were optimized to seek for optimal compositions of SIS and SBS versus asphalt according to response surface methodology (RSM). As the content of SBS or SIS was increased, both properties of softening point and viscosity, measured at high temperature, were increased with a statistical significance. However, the increments of softening point and viscosity per unit content of SBS added, were observed to be greater than those per unit content of SIS added, respectively. It was due to the difference of thermal properties of SBS and SIS at high temperature that the cross-linking degree of SBS was increased by gelation accompanied with the increase of viscosity, while chain-entanglement of SIS was relatively reduced owing to a chain scission of poly(isoprene) blocks causing the decrease of viscosity. To the contrary, SIS-SBS modified asphalt showed a behavior of the least elasticity resulting in both the maximum of penetration and adhesion, measured at room temperature, as well as the lowest low temperature flexibility at the composition of SIS, 4 g and SBS, 8.5 g based on asphalt, 63 g.

PURPOSES : The study objective was to evaluate rheology and physical properties of SBS-modified warm-mix asphalt (WMA) binders in comparison with hot-mix asphalt (HMA) binders. METHODS : Four different SBS polymers were used to prepare polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, and three different warm-mix additives (WAD) were used to prepare a total of 12 WMA PMA binders. The kinematic viscosity was measured at 115, $135^{\circ}C$. The PG was determined using DSR and BBR. The pass/fail (P/F) temperatures for high and low PG grading were evaluated for HMA PMA and WMA PMA binders. RESULTS : PG 76-22 binders could be prepared by modifying the base binder (PG 64-22) using 4.5 wt% of SBS. The kinematic viscosity (KV) of SBS PMA was increased by 3 times higher than that of base asphalt. The SBS PMA with WAD showed 10% lower KV than that of the normal SBS PMA at $115^{\circ}C$ The high P/F temperatures showed almost no difference between HMA PMA and WMA PMA binders. The high P/F temperature showed very high correlations with KV ($R^2$ > 0.97). The result of SBS modification caused increase of low P/F temperature by $2.7^{\circ}C$ on average. CONCLUSIONS : Since the PMA with WAD showed 10% lower KV than normal (HMA) PMA at $115^{\circ}C$, reducing PMA mixture temperature down to a WMA level was possible in this study. The higher KV binders showed the higher P/F temperature. There was almost no change in high P/F temperature due to the use of WAD. The SBS PMA, showing an increased low P/F temperature, might show somewhat poorer performance at low-temperature, even though the lower PG grade was staying at the same level, i.e., $-22^{\circ}C$.
The kinetics of photoinitiated polymerization of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends have been studied to characterize the diffusion-controlled reaction using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy-Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR-FTIR). The polymerization rates of reactive oligomer methacrylates and oligomer methacrylate/SBS blends were autocatalytic in nature at the initial stage and then a retardation of the reaction conversion occurred gradually as the polymer matrix became vitrified, and finally the reaction became diffusion controlled. Photopolymerization behavior of methacrylate/SBS blends was well predicted using the diffusion-controlled reaction model. N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NVP) as a reactive solvent was used to incorporate SBS into methacrylate to form semi-IPN via photopolymerization. Due to the high reactivity of NVP, polymerization rate increased with the increase of NVP content. As the content of NVP-SBS in the blends increased up to 10 phr, the reaction conversion maintained almost constant. But above 20 phr of NVP-SBS in the blends, the reaction conversion gradually decreased since the increase of viscosity affected on the photopolymerization rate. The semi-IPN films of methacrylate/SBS blends were transparent at room temperature as well as at increased temperature and were able to be applied to surface coating.
PURPOSE. Shear bond strength (SBS) test is the most commonly used method for evaluating resin bond strength of zirconia, but SBS results vary among different studies even when evaluating the same bonding strategy. The purpose of this study was to promote standardization of the SBS test in evaluating zirconia ceramic bonding and to investigate factors that may affect the SBS value of a zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimen. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The zirconia/resin cement/composite resin bonding specimens were used to simulate loading with a shear force by the three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) modeling, in which stress distribution under uniform/non-uniform load, and different resin cement thickness and different elastic modulus of resin composite were analyzed. In vitro SBS test was also performed to validate the results of 3D FE analysis. RESULTS. The loading flat width was an important affecting factor. 3D FE analysis also showed that differences in resin cement layer thickness and resin composite would lead to the variations of stress accumulation area. The SBS test result showed that the load for preparing a SBS specimen is negatively correlated with the resin cement thickness and positively correlated with SBS values. CONCLUSION. When preparing a SBS specimen for evaluating bond performance, the load flat width, the load applied during cementation, and the different composite resins used affect the SBS results and therefore should be standardized.

Styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer(SBS)/Clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing method with organic clay modified with dimethyl dihydrogenated-tallow amine(Cloisite 15A) and methyl tallow bis (2-hydroxy-ethyl) amine(Cloisite 30A), respectively. From the results of XRD, we found that mono layered silicates were dispersed in SBS matrix and they were exfoliated nanocomposites. Mechanical properties of exfoliated SBS nanocomposites were more improvedl than those of SBS. Especially, it was found that the addition of small amount of organoclay was enough to improve mechanical properties without increasing hardness.
