  • This study was carried out to elucidate the potential in substitution of SB latex with eco-friendly starch based bio-binder as a coating binder. The part of SB latex in coating color of pre- and top layer was substituted with starch based bio-binder in order to evaluate the characteristics of coating color and coated paper, and printability. The viscosity and water retention of coating color were increased by substitution of SB latex with starch based bio-binder. Roughness of coated paper was increased by substitution with starch based bio-binder, although there was not significant changes in roughness when SB latex is used as a binder in pre-coating color. Brightness and whiteness of coated paper were not affected, but opacity and print mottle were improved by substitution with starch based bio-binder. The interesting result observed was that dry-pick did not affected significantly, and ink set-off was improved by starch based bio-binder. It is expected that starch based bio-binder can be commercialized if the systematic further research works are carried out.

  • The most widely used glue in a corrugator is starch, which is a natural polymer. This material needs thermal energy to achieve a binding force, so a heating section is installed in a corrugator. However, this heating section can cause quality problems in linerboards and corrugating medium and increase the production cost because of the high cost of fossil resources. Therefore, a new adhesive that provides the binding force at lower temperatures than the conventional one must be developed. In this study, SB-latex was selected as a co-adhesive and added to the starch solution. The addition of the SB-latex was determined based on the viscosity of the new adhesive. The adhesive strength and the drying energy reduction of a corrugated board were measured to evaluate the functionalities of the new adhesive. The addition of SB-latex was determined to be under 20% of the oven-dried starch based on the viscosity of the new adhesive. The adhesive strength was improved and the drying energy was reduced by applying the new adhesive.

  • This study was carried out in order to elucidate effects of types of binder used in pre-coated layer on optical properties and printability of top-coated layer. Coated papers with four different types of SB latex were prepared. Tg, particle size and gel contents of latices were of different. Optical properties and printability of coated paper including print mottle were evaluated. It was confirmed that properties of pre-coated layer distinctively affected final properties of top-coated layer. Tg was found to be the most influencing factor on the print mottle of coated paper: the SB latex with lower Tg and higher particle size resulted in a superior print mottle. These results indicate that final printability and properties of top-coated layer can be controlled by adjusting pre-coated layer.

  • This study focused on the field applicability evaluation of SB latex-modified concrete (LMC) for concrete bridge deck overlay using mobile mixer. The main experimental factors were water-cement ratio(31, 33, 35 37%), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), and fine aggregate ratio(55, 56, 57, 58%) in order to evaluate the workability, mechanical properties, and durability property of LMC. The slump loss, air content, compressive and flexible strength tests were used to evaluate LMC workability and strength properties. Also, the rapid chloride permeability test was used to evaluate the relative permeability of LMC. As a results, the LMC with enough workability and good quality was produced when it was mixed in field using mobile mixer, satisfying the target compressive strength and flexural strength. The required water-cement ratio of LMC for same workability when mixing with mobile mixer was less than that when mixing in laboratory. Increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength by mobile mixer. The required cement-water ratios for same initial $19{\pm}3cm$ slump were 37% and 33% at laboratory and mobile mixer, respectively. The mobile mixer was accurately calibrated satisfying the required specification.

  • This study investigated the use of latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers (LMSC) as a repair material. Notably, no prior research has explored the application of LMSC for this purpose. This paper examines the interface bond strength and the type of failure between LMSC as a repair material and the normal concrete (NC) substrate utilising four different surfaces: without surface preparation as a reference (SR), hand hammer (HA), sandblasted (SB), and grooved (GR). The bond strength was measured by bi-surface shear, splitting tensile, and pull-off strength tests at 7, 28, and 90 days. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was also performed to study the microstructure of the interface between the normal concrete substrate and the latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers. The results of this study indicate that LMSC has bonding strength with NC, especially for HR and SB surfaces with high roughness. Therefore, substrate NC surface roughness is essential in increasing the bonding strength and adhesion. Eventually, The LMSC has the potential to repair and rehabilitate concrete structures.

  • Bio-binder is well known as a promising alternative binder for SB latex because it is eco-friendly and inexpensive, compared to synthetic latex. SB latex in top coating color was substituted with starch-based bio-binder to investigate its effects on the coating color and its coated paper properties. Bio-binder contributed to the increase of coating color viscosity, and the improvement of water retention. Most optical properties except opacity were deteriorated by the increase of bio-binder dosage. It was also found that the increase of bio-binder substitution in top coating color brought about the increase of roughness, and decrease of coated paper gloss, print gloss, dry and wet pick strength. However the stiffness and the ink set-off of the bio-binder coated paper were improved. Overall, mostly adverse effects of bio-binder on the properties of coating color and its paper were observed. Therefore, it is not recommended to use bio-binder as top coating color.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide the evaluation and prediction of strengths of SB latex modified concrete(LMC) using a statistical method and factorial experimental design method. The main experimental variables were as follows ; W/C ( 4 levels ; 31, 33, 35, 42%), S/a( 2 levels ; 55, 58%) and L/C(2 levels ; 5, 15%). The compressive strength and flexural strength of LMC were selected as a factor of response. The statistical method was carried out to analyze the results, together with factorial experimental design method and response surface method. The analysis showed that if L/C had been 15%, W/C appeared to be around 33% to achieve the design strength of $350kgf/cm^2$. In this case, the flexural strength and the slump came to around $68kgf/cm^2$ and 18cm, respectively. Eventhough the L/C varied, the design strength and W/C could be predictable together with slump value and flexural strength. As a result of series of experiments in this study, W/C and L/C were proved to be the main factors influencing on the compressive and flexural strength of LMC. Both of strength and slump values could be predictable from the mixing proportion of LMC.

  • In this study, we observed the effect of carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide on styrene-butadiene-styrene( SBS) composites for improving abrasion and debris. SBS composite, which added only silica, showed poor mechanical properties, NBS abrasion, and debris, caused by strong filler-filler interaction of silica. In case of adding carboxylated SBR latex, mechanical properties, NBS abrasion and debris of SBS composite were improved. Because of carboxyl group of carboxylated SBR latex interacted with silanol group of silica. Both carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide were added, SBS composite showed highest mechanical properties, NBS abrasion, and debris by forming ion cluster between carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide. By FT-IR analysis, ion clusters were confirmed that observed zinc carboxylated group stretch peak at $1550{\sim}1650cm^{-1}$ range. SBS composite, SC-4, showed excellent mechanical properties ; tensile strength $156kgf/cm^2$, elongation 936%, tear strength 59.4kgf/cm ; and excellent abrasion characteristics ; NBS abrasion 338%. Also, debris of SC-4 was minimized and showed wave-shape in fracture surface.

  • Even though corrugated boards are the most common packaging materials for agricultural products, conventional corrugated boards are not able to maintain the freshness of agricultural products. In order to overcome the limitations of conventional corrugated boards, a new hybrid corrugated board-composed of linerboard, a corrugating medium, and non-woven fabric-was designed to possess antibacterial, high porous and shock-absorbing properties. In this study, we compared the physical properties of non-woven fabric to those of the base papers of conventional corrugated boards and developed a new adhesive system as a first step toward manufacturing the hybrid corrugated board. We found that the non-woven fabric, which had relatively high elongation, was applicable in the corrugated board process, and that the manufacturing conditions must be controlled in order to prevent the break of the non-woven fabric. The mixture of starch and styrene-butadiene (SB) latex showed high adhesive strength, but the addition level of SB latex should not exceed 30% in starch solution.
