In this study, the somatic chromosome of 14 taxa of Korean Galium L. were investigated. Among them were a few taxa for which the somatic chromosome number was determined for the first time. The somatic chromosome numbers of Korean Galium L. were 2n = 22, 24, 44, 48, 66, 72, 77, 88 and so basic chromosome numbers were x = 11 or 12. Those taxa having the basic chromosome number x = 11 showed polyploidy, including diploid, tetraploid, heptaploid, and octoploid. Tetraploid and hexaploid can be observed in those taxa with the basic number x = 12. The eleven taxa reported 11 for the first time are G. spurium var. echinospermon (Wallr.) Hayek (2n = 44), G. gracilens (A. Gray) Makino (2n = 22), G. pogonanthum Franch. & Sav. (2n = 22, 44), G. trachyspermum A. Gray (2n = 22, 44), G. japonicum (Maxim.) Makino & Nakai (2n = 77), G. trifloriforme Kom. (2n = 44), G. dahuricum Turcz. var. dahuricum (2n = 48, 72), G. dahuricum var. tokyoense (Makino) Cufod. (2n = 22), G. kinuta Nakai & Hara (2n=66), G. verum var. trachycarpum for. nikkoense (Nakai) Ohwi (2n = 44), G. verum var. asiaticum for. pusillum (Nakai) M. Park (2n = 44). The taxa with the same chromosome numbers as previously reported ones were G. boreale L. (2n=22) and G. verum var. asiaticum Nakai for. asiaticum (2n = 44). The chromosome number of G. trifidum L. (2n = 22) was different from the previous report. Two infraspecific taxa of G. dahuricum showed differences in their basic chromosome numbers (x = 11 for G. dahuricum Turcz. var. dahuricum and x = 12 for var. tokyoense (Makino) Cufod. The somatic chromosome number for G. dahuricum Turcz. var. dahuricum was found to be 2n = 48 (tetraploid) or 72 (hexaploid), while that of G. dahuricum var. tokyoense (Makino) Cufod. was found to be 2n = 22 (diploid). Therefore, basic chromosome numbers for members of the genus Galium can be used as valuable characters in delimiting infrageneric sections and investigating interspecific relationships.
Morphological characters of section Acutae of the genus Carex (Cyperaceae) were reexamined. The epidermal patterns of perigynium, achene and leaf were investigated using by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a light microscope (LM). Morphological characters such as length and width of stem. leaf, bract, spike, scale, perigynium and achene, and shape of cross-sectioned stem, spike, scale, apex of scale, perigynium, beak of perigynium and achene, and epidermal pattern of perigynium, achene and leaf (shape of fundamental epidermal cell and cell wall, type of silica body, shape of beak epidermal cell and cell wall in perigynium, subsidiary cell shape. size and frequency of stomatal complex of leaf were useful for the identification of the observed 11 taxa. C. cinerascens, C. heterolepis and C. forficula have been confused due to similar morphological characters. C. cinerascens, C. heterolepis and C. forficula were distinct. however with respect to from width of leaf, shpae of scale, apex of scale, perigynium, beak of perigynium, and epidermal patterns of achene and leaf.
We investigated the flora of Mudeung-san (Mt.) located in Gwangju-gwangyeoksi, Hwasun-gun and Damyang-gun and discussed the vascular plants found there. 22 days separate fild trips were completed from March of 2009 to November 2011. As a result, we identified the distribution of 816 taxa in Mudeung-san (Mt.), comprising 123 families, 441 genera, 668 species, 5 subspecies, 121 varieties and 18 forms. There are a total 111 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicator plants are as follows; nine taxa of level V such as Gastrodia elata Blume, six taxa of level IV such as Hylomecon hylomeconoides T. Lee, 21 taxa of level III such as Stewartia korena Nakai, 18 taxa of level II, and 66 taxa of level I. In addition, two critically endangered species (CR), Galeola septentrionalis Rchb.f. and Paeonia obovata Maxim., two endangered species (EN), Dryopteris cycadina (Franch. & Sav.) C.Chr. and Jeffersonia dubia Benth., and eight vulnerable species (VU), such as Lilium callosum Siebold & Zucc, were found in the investigated area. Also, 14 endermic plants of Korea, such as Salix koriyanagi Kimura and Aconitium chiisanense Nakai, were found.

The objectives of this study are to identify whether the small area variation also exists in the oriental medicine and, if it exists, what causes, to expand our boundary of research interests on the small area variation observed at the western medicine toward the oriental medicine as one of the fundamental research foundations and to provide any fundamental findings from this study results to the healthcare politicians to promote consumer's rational behaviors for the use of healthcare. This study analyzed the health insurance claim data (2010, 2011) which were the patients of western medicine and the outpatients of the oriental medicine with the top 10 most frequent diseases and looked into the variation of healthcare utilization among the areas after grouping resident area into an 86-area category. The study result shows that the small area variation was also observed at the part of the oriental medicine in which the characteristics of patients critically affect the healthcare expenditure per visit day rather than those of providers and the characteristics of both patients and providers equally affect the healthcare expenditure per patient. Therefore, this study suggests that government set up healthcare policies on the standardization of oriental medicine to prevent its over-utilization and unmet need, enforcing the roles of oriental medicine in the markets, enhancing the appropriate health care utilization, and expanding provision and sharing the health care information to reduce unnecessary health care utilization.

This study was conducted to determine the antioxidant potentials of some available plants to source alternate antioxidants and antibiotics. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by determining the antioxidant activity reducing powers and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activities of extracts from some local edible native plants. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of the extracts was found to have been 0.41-94.84%. The Elsholtziasplendens NAKAI extract ($85^{\circ}C$, ethanol, accelerated solvent extraction) showed the highest level of antioxidant activity. Eight samples of plant extracts were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities against three microflora (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans) using disc diffusion assay. Two samples (Geranium krameri FR. Et SAV. and Cleyera japonica Thunb.) had much more intensive antimicrobial activities than the control. However, their DPPH free radical scavenging activity levels were only 14.50 and 13.85, respectively. It is suggested that they could be used as natural preservatives against bacterial contamination in cosmetics and foods, in place of the common synthetic preservatives currently used.
Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to evaluate relationships of 7 taxa of Korean Carpesium including three outgroup (Inula britannica L., Inula germanica L., Rhanteriopsis lannginosa (DC.) Rauschert) by using ITS (internal transcribed spacer) sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic studies used maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining and maximum likelihood methods analysis. The length of the ITS sequences was 731 bp, and the lengths of the ITS1, ITS2 and 5.8S regions were 284~297 bp, 264~266 bp and 164 bp, respectively. The total number of variable sites was 111 for the entire sequences, and a parsimony informative sites of 64 are valid. Base change appeared variously in ITS1 rather than in ITS2. As the result, Korean Carpesium were formed monophyletic group and C. abrotanoides situated as the most basal clade. The results show that C. macrocephalum is closely related with C. triste. C. rosulatum has the closest relationship with C. glossophyllum. C. cernuum is close to C. divaricatum. These results suggest that the ITS data used in this study could be useful for the phylogenetic analysis of Korean Carpesium.

This study evaluated the drought tolerance of Liriope platyphylla F.T.Wang & T.Tang, Dendranthema zawadskii var. lucidum (Nakai) J.H.Park, Hosta longipes (Franch. & Sav.) Matsum., Sedum sarmentosum Bunge and Zoysia japonica Steud. for an extensive green roof. In order to assess drought tolerance of green roof plants, several criteria were measured such as volumetric water content, leaf and soil moisture potential, chlorophyll a and b, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and antioxidants. The results of the drought tolerance measurement of green roof plants focused on the gradually withering of plants from lack of volumetric water content. D. zawadskii was the first to show an initial wilting point, followed by Z. japonica, H. longipes and L. platyphylla in order while S. sarmentosum showed no withering. It was concluded that H. longipes, L. platyphylla and S. sarmentosum were highly drought tolerant plants able to survive over three weeks. Furthermore, chlorophyll a and b were divided into two types: Type I, which kept regular content from the beginning to the middle of the period and suddenly declined, like H. longipes and Z. japonica; and Type II, which showed low content at the beginning, sharply increased at the middle stage and decreased, like D. zawadskii, L. platyphylla and S. sarmentosum. Volumetric water content and the amount of evapotranspiration consistently declined in all plant species. The analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence results that S. sarmentosum, which had relatively high drought tolerance, was the last to decline, while Z. japonica and S. sarmentosum withered after rapid reduction. At first, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate showed high activity, but they lowered as the plant body closed stomata owing to the decrease in volumetric water content. Measuring antioxidants showed that when drought stress increased, the amount of antioxidants grew as well. However, when high moisture stress was maintained, this compound was continuously consumed. Therefore, the variation of antioxidants was considered possible for use as one of the indicators of drought tolerance evaluation.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive and psychological characteristics of patients with military service suitability issues compared to the general psychiatric outpatients. Methods : 108 patients who visited psychiatric clinic center due to military service suitability issues and 80 general psychiatric patients were recruited from the Department of Psychiatry of university hospital. ANCOVA and chi-equare test were used to examine differences between two groups. Furthermore, we utilized paired t-test to compare the scrore within military group depending on when they performed the psychological assessment. Results : There were no significant differences between military group and general outpatient group in WAIS-IV scores. However, military group scored remarkably higher than control group on validity scales, F-r and Fp-r whereas they scored lower on validity scale, K-r. Furthermore, military group showed significantly higher on BDI and MMPI-2-RF, EID, RCd, RC2, RC3, COG, HLP, SFD, NFC, STW, SAVE, SHY, DSF, NEGE-r, INTR-r. As a result of comparison within the military group following the periods of assessment, military group did not show the significant differences on the overall scales of MMPI-2-RF. Conclusions : The present study showed that military group tends to report their psychological distress more exaggeratedly. In addition, they had significantly elevated not only emotional distress such as depression and anxiety but interpersonal problem. The implications and limitations were discussed along with some suggestions for the future studies.

Five species of plants (Clerodendrum trichotomum Thunb., Angelica dahurica (Fisch. ex Hoffm.) Benth. & Hook. f. ex Franch. & Sav., Caryopteris incana (Thunb. ex Houtt.) Miq., Lonicera japonica Thunb., and Parasenecio auriculatus var. matsumurana Nakai) native to the clean area of Mt. Jiri were selected. The collection period was from May to September 2021, and the five species plants were collected in their native habitats with flowers in full bloom. The collected plants were extracted with 70% EtOH, and 17 kinds of polyphenol components were analyzed. Next, flowers, leaves, stems, and roots were separated from plants, extracted with 70% EtOH for each part and experiments were conducted on DPPH, ABTS, total polyphenols, and total flavonoids. The results are as follows. 1. It was found that there were a total of 8 kinds of polyphenols contained in 5 species of plants that are native to Mt. Jiri. Among the polyphenol components, chlorogenic acid was contained in 4 species of plants, and caffeic acid was contained in 2 species of plants. 2. As a result, the DPPH radical scavenging activity was the best in the stem of P. auriculata and the C. trichotomum was good regardless of the specific part. It was found that the activity-scavenging activity was good in the flowers of A. dahurica and the leaves of L. japonica. 3. The highest ABTS radical scavenging activity was C. trichotomum Thunb., whose EC50 value was 38.73~66.28ppm. Next, the leaves and stems of L. japonica Thunb., A. dahurica and P. auriculata, and the leaves and stems of C. incana appeared in that order. 4. The highest total polyphenol content was 154.83mg GAE/g in the leaves of C. trichotomum, followed by about 130mg GAE/g in the flowers of C. trichotomum and P. auriculata. The lowest was 26.27mg GAE/g in the stems of A. dahurica.
