  • We performed the experiment to determine the effective factors, such as the initial concentration of protein, pore size of air distributor, SAV (superficial air velocity), pH, salts and temperature related to foaming characteristics. The foam height in a foam generator was increased with the increase of the initial protein concentration and the decrease of pore size. As SAV was increased, the foam height was increased, and the optimum SAV was 0.84 cm/sec. The foam height was highest in the acid region and it was increased with the increase of salt concentration of NaCl and $NaHCO_3.$ The removal efficiencies of TSS (total suspended solid) and turbidity decreased with the increase of the initial protein concentration in the batch foam separator.

  • In order to choose the manufacturing method for extracting alginates from sea tangle, Laminaria japonica, three methods were applied. In Method I, alginates were extracted with NaOH solution from sea tangle powder and extracted alginates were precipitated and converted to alginic acid by $CaCl_2$ and HCI solution. Then alginic acid was converted to sodium alginates with $Na_2CO_3$ solution. Sodium alginates were precipitated with methyl alcohol and were resolved with hot water and this step was repeated three times. Method II was same to Method I except final step including that sodium alginates were precipitated and washed with methyl alcohol three times. Method III included that sodium alginates were extracted with $Na_2CO_3$ solution from sea tangle powder then sodium alginates were precipitated and washed with methyl alcohol three time. Extracting time increased with Increasing extracted alginates amounts but increasing rates were below $0.4\%/h.$ Alginates amounts recovered by Method III showed above 2 times more to those by Method I and II. Extracting time increased with increasing ash amount of sodium alginates but increasing rates were below $0.1\%/h.$ and that of sodium alginates extracted by Method III showed higher value $(5\%)$ than those by Method I and II. In the sodium alginates prepared by Method III, the amount of ash in alginates dried by air was $34.4\%,$ that by vacuum freeze drying was $47.8\%.$ Extracting time increased with decreasing average molecular weight (MW) and degree of polymerization (DP) of sodium alginates, MW and DP of alginates prepared by Method III were higher than those by Method I and II In same extracting time. Extracting time increased with decreasing rate of apparent viscosity change (SAV) of alginates solution, and SAV of alginates prepared by Method III showed higher value than those by Method I and II in same extracting time. SAV of alginates dried by air was higher than that by vacuum freeze drying. Relating equation among SAV MW and DP were MW = 60.066 (SAV) -93.950, DP =309.760 (SAV) -485.084 and MW = 0.914 (DP)+0.213.

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate characteristics of hydrolysates from file-fish flesh with various proteases. File-fish flesh was chopped, homogenized with water, and hydrolysed by 8 different kinds of commercially available protease. High production of peptide was observed in bromelain and neutrase treatment. On the other hand, large amount of free amino acid was observed in esp/sav and pronase treatment. Neutrase and pancreatin hydrolysate contained large amount of 5'-GMP. Organoleptic studies showed that the bromelain, esp/sav and protease hydrolysate had strong bitter taste, while pronase and esp/sav hydrolysate had strong umami taste. From these results, pronase was found to be suitable enzyme for producing file-fish hydrolysate.

  • Euonymus alatus (EAE) and Euonymus alatus for. ciliatodentatus (Franch. & Sav.) Hiyama (EACHE) belong to the Celastraceae family and are one of the medicinal herbs used in traditional medicine as a therapeutic agent for blood circulation diseases. In this study, we prepared leaves methanolic extract of EAE (L-EAE), twigs methanolic extract of EAE (T-EAE), leaves methanolic extract of EACHE (L-EACHE) and twigs methanolic extract of EACHE (T-EACHE), and compared their anti-inflammatory activities. To analyze the anti-inflammatory activities, Raw 264.7 cells were used, since they are immature-macrophages and easily matured by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. All extracts showed anti-inflammatory activities in the activated Raw 264.7 cells. That is, we showed that L-EACHE and T-EACHE are potent inhibitors of the production of nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines. These results are expected to serve as a guide for future studies on the ability of Celastraceae family to inhibit acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

  • Removal of waste generated by Paralichthys olivaceus in the seawater aquarium using a foam separator was investigated. Protein concentration without a foam separator continuously increased until 3 days after stocking and reached at 25 mg/L after 5 days stocking, but protein concentration became lower than the initial protein concentration (2.5 mg/L) with a foam separator. The trends of other fish wastes such as ammonia, total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were similar to protein. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in the aquarium decreased below 6.0 mg/L without a foam separator, but with a foam separator the average DO in the aquarium was 7.3 mg/L. Foam separation with the increase of superficial air velocity (SAV) was more effective than that with the fixed SAV. This study showed that wastewater. treatment of seawater aquarium using a foam separator is effective method for a fish waste removal and oxygen supply.

  • Effects of different operating factors including superficial air velocity (SAV), hydraulic residence time (HRT), protein concentration, and foam overflow height on protein removal by a foam fractionator in simulated seawater aquaculture system were investigated. This experiment was conducted on batch and consecutive modes at different combinations of the affecting factors. The foam fractionator had a diameter of 20cm and a height of 120cm and the experiment was conducted with synthetic wastewater. In 5 consecutive trials, protein concentrations in culture tank water decreased faster when the foam fractionator was operated at higher SAVs and lower HRTs. In batch trials, protein removal rates increased with an increase in SAV but decreased with an increase in URT. Higher protein concentrations in the bulk solution resulted in higher protein removal rates. Protein concentrations in the collected foam condensates increased but the foam overflow rates decreased with the increase of foam overflow heights. The results of this experiment indicate that foam fractionation would be an effective way for protein removal in seawater aquaculture systems and the performance of the foam fractionator depends largely on the operating parameters, especially SAV.

  • A new distribution of Trichosanthes cucumeroides (Ser.) Maxim. ex Franch. & Sav. is discovered in Korea. This species was collected from forest margins on Ando Island, Ando-ri, Nam-myeon, Yeosu-si, in Jeollanam-do. T. cucumeroides is clearly distinguished from other species of the genus by having three- or five-lobed leaf blades, linear-lanceolate and minute bracts with entire margins, and oblong to triangular-ovoid seeds. Here, we provide precise description, a taxonomic key to the Korean Trichosanthes species, illustrations, and photographs of its habitat. The Korean name for the species is established as 'Bul-geun-ha-neul-ta-ri' considering the reddish color of its fruit.

  • In a simulated seawater aquaculture system, effects of different operating factors like the superficial air velocity (SAY), hydraulic residence time (HRT), protein concentration and foam overflow height on the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) by a foam fractionator, with 20 cm diameter and 120 cm height, were investigated. This experiment was performed on batch and consecutive modes for different combinations of the tested factors, using synthetic wastewater. In 5 consecutive trials, TSS concentration in culture tank water decreased faster, when the foam fractionator was operated at higher SAV and lower HRT. In batch trials, with increasing SAV, TSS removal rate increased, but decreased with increasing HRT. Higher protein concentration in the bulk solution resulted in higher TSS removal rate. TSS concentration in the collected foam condensates increased but the foam overflow rate decreased with increasing foam overflow height. Foam fractionation was effective for removing TSS in seawater aquaculture systems and its performance largely depended on the operating parameters, especially superficial air velocity.
