  • Background: The biological and pharmacological effects of BST204, a fermented ginseng extract, have been reported in various disease conditions. However, its molecular action in metabolic disease remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified the antiadipogenic activity of BST204 resulting from its inhibition of the S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) signaling pathway. Methods: The inhibitory effects of BST204 on S6K1 signaling were investigated by immunoblot, nuclear fractionation, immunoprecipitation analyses. The antiadipogenic effect of BST204 was evaluated by measuring mRNA levels of adipogenic genes and by chromatin immunoprecipitation and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Results: Treatment with BST204 inhibited activation and nuclear translocation of S6K1, further decreasing the interaction between S6K1 and histone H2B in 10T1/2 mesenchymal stem cells. Subsequently, phosphorylation of H2B at serine 36 (H2BS36p) by S6K1 was reduced by BST204, inducing an increase in the mRNA expression of Wnt6, Wnt10a, and Wnt10b, which disturbed adipogenic differentiation and promoted myogenic and early osteogenic gene expression. Consistently, BST204 treatment during adipogenic commitment suppressed the expression of adipogenic marker genes and lipid drop formation. Conclusion: Our results indicate that BST204 blocks adipogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells through the inhibition of S6K1-mediated histone phosphorylation. This study suggests the potential therapeutic strategy using BST204 to combat obesity and musculoskeletal diseases.

  • Among 110 isolates of actinomycetes isolated from ginseng pathogen-suppressive soils, the three actinomycetes showing the effective controls to Fusarium solani or Cylindrocarpon destructans causing ginseng root rots were identified according to their morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics on various culture media. Spore chains of K 6-2, S 2-1 and Y 2-2 were Spira (S), Retinaculum-apertum (RA) and Rectus-flexibilis (RF), respectively. Spore surfaces of K 6-2 were spiny, whereas S 2-1 and Y 2-2 were all smooth. Aerial mass colors of 3 isolates were gray series. As a result of various tests, they were identified as Streptomyces variabilis, Streptomyces virginiae and Streptomyces griseo/us, respectively.

  • In this study, the reaction mechanism of ethane and the reaction rate equation suitable for hydrocarbon reforming were studied. Through the reaction mechanism analysis, it was confirmed that three reactions (CO2 + H2, C2H6 + H2, C2H6 + H2O) proceed during the reforming reaction of ethane, each reaction rate (CO2+H2($r=3.42{\times}10-5molgcat.-1\;s-1$), C2H6+H2($r=3.18{\times}10-5mol\;gcat.-1s-1$), C2H6+H2O($r=1.84{\times}10-5mol\;gcat.-1s-1$)) was determined. It was confirmed that the C2H6 + H2O reaction was a rate determining step (RDS). And the reaction equation of this reaction can be expressed as r = kS * (KAKBPC2H6PH2O) / (1 + KAPC2H6 + KBPH2O) (KA = 2.052, KB = 6.384, $kS=0.189{\times}10-2$) through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The obtained equation was compared with the derived power rate law without regard to the reaction mechanism and the power rate law was relatively similar fitting in the narrow concentration change region (about 2.5-4% of ethane, about 60-75% of water) It was confirmed that the LH model reaction equation based on the reaction mechanism shows a similar value to the experimental value in the wide concentration change region.

  • This study conducted a subjective evaluation of brightness perception and visual discomfort according to dimming speeds and CCTs(Correlated Color Temperatures). Dimming speeds of two different CCT lights(2,700K, 6400K) were set to 1.7%/s, 3.3%/s, 5.0%/s, 6.7%/s, and 10.0%/s respectively. Subjects checked the time when they perceived the change of the brightness and visual discomfort. As a result, when dimming speeds were 1.7%/s, 3.3%/s, 5.0%/s, 6.7%/s, more than half of subjects responded the change of the brightness in 55.0~45.0% dimming ratios, and felt the visual discomfort in 35~25% dimming ratios. When the brightness was changed, dimming level responded to the brightness perception of hight CCT(6,400K) was higher about 8.0% then dimming level responded to the brightness perception of low CCT(2,700K). Dimming level responded to the visual discomfort of low CCT(2,700K) was higher about 5.0% then dimming level responded to the visual discomfort of hight CCT(6,400K).

  • The HVPS of the TWTA for military satellite communications is developed and tested. With 380 V input DC voltage, the HVPS provides -10.95 kV for Cathode, -4.27 kV for Collectorl and -6.57 kV for Collector2 of the TWT that generates 600 W X-band output signal power. The total output power of the HVPS is about 1.6 kW. The voltage ripples of Cathode, Collectorl and Collector2 are 6 V, 12 V and 6 V, respectively, which are only $0.055\%,\;0.281\%$ and $0.091\%$ compared to the absolute output voltages.

  • This paper offers solutions to unresolved $43{\leq}R(5,5){\leq}49$ and $102{\leq}R(6,6){\leq}165$ problems of Ramsey's number. The Ramsey's number R(s,t) of a complete graph $k_n$ dictates that n-1 number of incidental edges of a arbitrary vertex ${\upsilon}$ is dichotomized into two colors: (n-1)/2=R and (n-1)/2=B. Therefore, if one introduces the concept of distance to the vertex ${\upsilon}$, one may construct a partite graph $K_n=K_L+{\upsilon}+K_R$, to satisfy (n-1)/2=R of {$K_L,{\upsilon}$} and (n-1)/2=B of {${\upsilon},K_R$}. Subsequently, given that $K_L$ forms the color R of $K_{s-1)$, $K_S$ is attainable. Likewise, given that $K_R$ forms the color B of $K_{t-1}$, $K_t$ is obtained. By following the above-mentioned steps, $R(s,t)=K_n$ was obtained, satisfying necessary and sufficient conditions where, for $K_L$ and $K_R$, the maximum distance should be even and incidental edges of all vertices should be equal are satisfied. This paper accordingly proves R(5,5)=43 and R(6,6)=91.

  • Congenital aniridia is a rare ocular malformation that presents with severe hypoplasia of the iris and various ocular manifestations. Most cases of congenital aniridia are known to be related to mutations in the paired box gene-6 (PAX6 ), which is an essential gene in eye development. Herein, we report a familial case of autosomal dominant congenital aniridia with four affected members in 3 consecutive generations and describe the detailed ophthalmologic findings for one of these members. As expected, mutational analysis revealed a nonsense mutation (p.Ser122*) in the PAX6 gene. Thus, our findings reiterate the importance of PAX6 mutations in congenital aniridia.
