Purpose : To improve the treatment results of locally advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients we treated those patients with regional hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy. And we conducted a retrospective analysis of the results. Material and Methods Thirty two nonsmall cell lung cancer Patients treated at the Department of Radiation Oncology, St. Mary's hospital, Catholic University Medical College were the base of this analysis. Fourteen patients of above them were treated with hyperthermia and radiotherapy of more than 3000 cGy in radiation dose. Radiofrequency capacitive hyperthermia was administered twice weekly immediately after radiotherapy. Total sessions of hyperthermia ranged from 3 to 13 times (mean 7.8). Eighteen patient received an external radiation therapy alone Median radiation dose was 5580 cGy (range, 3000-7000 cGy) in fraction of 180-300 cGy, 5 fractions per week. Results: The results of themoradiotherapy group (HTRT group) were compared with radiation alone group (RT group). There were no complete response (CR) and 12 Partial responses (PR) (CR rate $0\%$, response rate $85.7\%$) in HTRT group, whereas there were 2 CRs, 8 PRs and 8 no responses (CR rate $11.1\%$, response rate $55.6\%$) in RT group. There was significant differece in local response rate of the tumors between RT group and HTRT group (p < 0.05). Overall 2 rear survival rate and mean survival were $7.1\%$ and 10.5 months for HTRT group, and $0\%$ and 8.1 months for RT group. However, by the number of hyperthermia. in cases with more than or equal to 10 sessions of hyperthermia, there were significant improvement in 2 year year survival rate and mean survival ($40.0\%$ and 18.2 months) compared with those in cases with less than 10 sessions of hyperhtemia ($7.4\%$ and 7.4 months) (p < 0.05). Conclusion : Thermoradiotherapy in locally advanced NSCLC patients increased their response rate but not 2 year survival and mean survival, therefore thermoradiotherpy with enough number of hyperthermia is suggested that may be one of the effective palliative treatments of those patients. And in cases with more than 10 sessions of hyperthermia, there showed improved 2 year survival rate and mean survival But the number of the cases was small further study in this aspect is required.

The rapid rise in the application of novel treatment techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), motivated us to survey the status of Korea's radiation safety management and the shielding designs of facilities employing medical linear accelerators (LINACs). To this end, a questionnaire was used to collect information on LINAC facilities and treatments, workload, shielding design, shielding management, and path of obtaining shielding information. Out of 100 domestic institutions, 52 responded to the survey. Approximately 70% of the institutions utilized IMRT for more than 60% of their cases, and an IMRT factor of 5 was adopted by 75% of these institutions. Over 80% of the institutions accounted for the applied time-averaged dose rate per week and instantaneous dose equivalent rates in their shielding designs. Approximately 45% of the institutions obtained important shielding information via a radiation shielding design company and the NCRP-151 report. Overall, most facilities were shown to follow the standards recommended by the relevant international agencies. However, the requirement to establish standardized shielding design information and clarify ambiguous paths for information acquisition was also highlighted. Therefore, the study's results can be used as a foundation for establishing a safety control system and for creating adequate shielding designs.
Previous biochemical studies indicate that $(Na^++K^+)-ATPase$ is composed of two subunits, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$, in a form of ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2$ with a molecular weight of approximately 300,000 daltons. There is also suggestive evidence that the $Na^+$, $K^+$ pump in human erythrocytes occurs in a complex with some glycolytic enzymes. We assessed here in situ assembly size of the $(Na^++K^+)-ATPase$ of human erythrocytes by applying classical target theory to radiation inactivation data of the ouabain-sensitive sodium flux and ATP hydrolysis of intact cells and ghosts. Cells(in the presence of cryoprotective agent) and ghosts were irradiated at $-45^{\circ}C$ to $-50^{\circ}C$ with an increasing dose of a 1.5 MeV electron beam, and after thawing, the pump and/or enzyme activities were assayed. Each activity measured was decreased as a simple exponential function of radiation dose, from which a radiation sensitive volume (target size) was calculated. When intact cells were used, the target size of both $(Na^++K^+)-ATPase$ and $Na^+$, $K^+$ pump was found to be approximately 600,000 daltons. This target size of the ATPase was reduced to approximately 325,000 daltons if the cells were pretreated with strophanthidin. When ghosts were used, the target size of the ATPase was again approximately 325,000 daltons. Our target size measurement suggests that, in intact cells, the $(Na^++K^+)-ATPase/Na^+,K^+$ pump exists either as a dimer of $(\alpha\beta)_2$ which is a functional unit or as a monomer of $(\alpha\beta)_2$ but in tight complex with other enzyme or enzymes. The results also suggest that this dimeric or heterocomplex association is dissociated during ghost preparation and strophanthidin treatment.

Purpose : This study tried to evaluate the effectiveness of combined treatment using radiation therapy and concurrent cisplatin as a radiosensitizer in the management of locally advanced head and neck cancer. Materials and methods : From January 1995 to August 1998, 29 evaluable patients with locally advanced head & neck cancels (AJCC stage $II\~IV$) were received curative radiation therapy $(total\;70\~75.6\;Gy/35\~42\;fractions,\;1.8\~2\;Gy/fraction)$ and concurrent cisplatin chemotherapy ($100\;mg/m^2$, D1, D22, D43). The neck dissections were peformed for residual lymphadenopathy. Follow-up ranged from 5 to 55 months (median 24 months). Results : Twenty-one $(72.4\%)$ patients achieved clinical complete responses. The partial response and minimal response rates were $17.2\%\;and\;10.4\%$, respectively. Locoregional failure rate was $27.6\%$, and included 6 patients with local failures, 4 patients with regional failures, and 2 patients with combined local and regional failures. Four of 29 patients $(13.8\%)$ developed distant metastasis. The disease free survival rate at 3 years was $60\%$. Nasopharyngeal primary tumors or complete responders showed significantly higher disease free survival rate. The grade 3 mucositis and nausea/vomiting was noted in $34.5\%$, respectively. Major prolongation of radiation therapy duration was inevitable in three patients. Twenty-one patients $(72.4\%)$ completed 3 courses of cisplatin and 5 patients received 2 courses of cisplatin. Three patients received only one course of cisplatin due to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity, and then changed to 5-FU regimen. Conclusions : Concurrent cisplatin-radiation therapy in locally advanced head and neck cancer showed high response rate, reasonable locoregional control, and survival rate. As expected, acute toxicities were increased, but compliance to treatment was acceptable. Assessment of the effect of the combination in this setting requires further accrual and follow-up.

To investigate smoke movement with radiation in a room fires, a numerical and experi-mental analysis were performed. In this paper, results from a field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) were compared with Stockier's ex-periment and the experiments on various sized pool fires in a room with door The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k- $\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the S-N discrete ordinates method (DOM). The result of the cal-culated smoke temperature considering radiation effect has shown good agreement compared with the experimental data, although there are large discrepancy in the hot smoke layer be-tween the temperature predicted by the SMEP with only convection effect and obtained by the experimental result. This large discrepancy is caused from the radiation effect of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Hence the radiation effect under smoke in fire is the point to be specially considered in order to produce more realistic result.
The development of radiation-tolerant radio-frequency (RF) systems can be a solution for applications in extreme radiation environments, such as nuclear power plant monitoring and space exploration. Among the crucial components within an RF system, the low noise amplifier (LNA) stands out due to its vulnerability to TID effects, mainly relying on transistors as its main devices. In this study, the TID effects in the LNA using standard 0.18 ㎛ complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS) technology are estimated and analyzed. The results show that the LNA can withstand absorbed radiation up to 100 kGy. The S21, S11, noise figure (NF), stability (K), and linearity of the third input intercept point (IIP3) slightly shifted from the initial values of 0.8312 dB, 0.793 dB, 0.00381 dB, 1.34406, and 2.36066 dBm, respectively which are still comparable to the typical performances. Moreover, the standard 0.18 ㎛ technology has demonstrated its radiation tolerance, as it exhibits negligible performance degradation in the conventional LNA even when exposed to radiation levels up to 100 kGy. In this context, simulation approach offers a means to predict the TID effects and estimate the radiation exposure limit for electronic devices, particularly when transistors are used as the primary RF components.
Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of postoperative radiotherapy for the treatment of keloid scars administered immediately after Cesarean section. Materials and Methods: A total of 26 postpartum patients with confirmed keloids resulting from previous Cesarean sections received either 12 or 15 Gy radiotherapy. The radiotherapy was divided into three 6 MeV electron beam fractions administered during the postpartum period immediately following the final Cesarean section. To evaluate ovarian safety, designated doses of radiation were estimated at the calculated depth of the ovaries using a solid plate phantom and an ionization chamber with the same lead cutout as was used for the treatment of Cesarean section operative scars and a tissue equivalent bolus. Results: In total, the control rate was 77% (20 patients), while six (23%) developed focally elevated keloids (ranging from 0.5 to 2 cm in length) in the middle of the primary abdominal scar. Five patients experienced mild hyperpigmentation. Nonetheless, most patients (96%) were satisfied with the treatment results. The estimated percentage of the applied radiation doses that reached the calculated depth of the ovaries ranged from 0.0033% to 0.0062%. Conclusion: When administered during the immediate postpartum period, postoperative electron beam radiotherapy for repeated Cesarean section scars is generally safe and produces good cosmetic results with minimal toxicity.
Global gene expression of Deinococcus radiodurans, a highly radiation resistant bacterium, in response to excess copper was analyzed by using oligonucleotide microarray chip. Among 3,187 open reading frames of D. radiodurans, seventy genes showed a statistically significant expression ratio of at least 2-fold changes under growth conditions of excess copper; 64 genes were induced and 6 genes were reduced. Especially, two operons ($DRB0014{\sim}DRB0017$ and $DRB0125{\sim}DRB0121$) presumably involved in the iron transport and utilization were the most highly induced genes by excess copper. A quantitative real-time PCR assay revealed that DRB00l4 and DRB0125 are highly transcribed responding to excess copper and 2,2'-dipyridyl, an iron chelator. In addition, the transcription of both genes was not changed by excess iron and bathocuproine disulphonate, a copper chelator. These results suggested that the copper metabolism may be closely connected with the iron transport and utilization in D. radiodurans. However, the disruption of each gene, DRB00l4 and DRB0125, did not affect the copper and radiation resistance, the most well-known character of this organism.
Purpose : To investigate the Presence of adaptive response by low dose radiation in murine tumors in relation to radiation induced apoptosis as well as related mechanism. Materials and Methods : Syngeneic murine tumors, OCa-I and HCa-l, were given 0.05 Gy pretreatment followed by therapeutic dose of 25 Gy radiation. Induction of apoptosis was analyzed for each treatment group. Regulating molecules of apoptosis, p53, Bcl-2, Bax, Bcl-X, were also analyzed by Western blotting. Results : In 0.05 Gy pretreatment group of OCa-I, 25 Gy-induced apoptosis per 1000 cells was 229, which was estimated at $30\%$ lower level than the expected (p<0.05). In contrast, this reduction in radiation induced apoptosis was not seen in HCa-l. In the expression of apoptosis regulating molecules, p53 increased in both tumors in response to radiation. Bcl-2 and Bax did not show significant change in both tumors however, the expression of Bcl-2 surpassed that of Bax in 0.05 Gy pretreatment group of OCa-l. Bcl-X was not expressed in OCa-l. In HCa-l, Bcl-X showed increased expression even with 0.05 Gy. Conclusion : Adaptive response by low dose radiation Is shown in one murine tumor, OCa-l, in relation to radiation induced apoptosis. Apoptosis regulating molecules including Bcl-2/Bax and Bcl-X, appear to related. This study shows an evidence that adaptive response is present, but not a generalized phenomenon in vivo.
Thirty Patients with loco-regional recurrence following curative surgery for adenocarcinoma of the rectum were retrospectively evaluated to determine factors influencing survival and the efficacy of radiation therapy. In this review of 30 patients undergoing radiation therapy, more than 50 percent(17/30) had definite symptomatic and objective response. Ninety percent of patients(27/30) received significant palliation. Over all 2 year survival rate was $7.4\%$ and their median survival was 13.0 months. Grade of response and Sex were statistically related to survival.
