  • Present study was undertaken to establish the modified Broca's indices to estimate standard body weight by using a total of 5,496 insured persons who were medically examined at the Honam Medical Room of Dong Bang Life Insurance Company Ltd. from January, 1983 to January, 1986. The results were as follows: 1. The linear regression equations of body weight to $height^3$ to estimate standard body weight were as follows: In male, for $18{\sim}19$ age group $y=7.272{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+23.560$ for $20{\sim}29$ age group $y=8.187{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+22.031$ for $30{\sim}39$ age group $y=8.627{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+23.169$ for $40{\sim}49$ age group $y=9.561{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+20.994$ for $50{\sim}59$ age group $y=8.604{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+23.081$ and for all ages group $y=7.778{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+25.929$ In female, for $18{\sim}19$ age group $y=8.252{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+18.920$ for $20{\sim}29$ age group $y=7.715{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+22.409$ for $30{\sim}39$ age group $y=8.808{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+21.440$ for $40{\sim}49$ age group $y=9.691{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+21.940$ for $50{\sim}59$ age group $y=12.550{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+11.031$ and for all ages group $y=7.300{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+26.601$ In both sexes, for all ages group $y=8.342{\times}10^{-6}{\times}x^3+22.998$ 2. The modified Broca's index is expressed by formula $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}K(kg)$. K is obtained from the following formula standard weight to average height estimated $\frac{by\;means\;of\;linear\;regression\;equation(kg)}{\{Average\;height(cm)-100\}{\times}K(kg)}$=1 Author's modified Broca's indices are as follows: In male, for $18{\sim}19$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.85(kg)$ for $20{\sim}29$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.90(kg)$ for $30{\sim}39$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ for $40{\sim}49$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.00(kg)$ for $50{\sim}59$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ and for all ages group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ In female, for $18{\sim}19$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.90(kg)$ for $20{\sim}29$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.90(kg)$ for $30{\sim}39$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.00(kg)$ for $40{\sim}49$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.05(kg)$ for $50{\sim}59$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.05(kg)$ and for all ages group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.00(kg)$ In both sexes, for all age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ 3. Several types of modified Broca's index recommended by author are as follows: I. In male, for $18{\sim}29$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.90(kg)$ and for $30{\sim}59$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ In female, for $18{\sim}29$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.90(kg)$ and for $30{\sim}39$ age group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.00(kg)$ II. In male, for all ages group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ In female, for all ages group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}1.00(kg)$ III. In both sexes, for all ages group $\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.95(kg)$ Note: The first type of modified Broca's index is the most precise one in estimating standard body weight among several types established by author. 4. Error of estimated standard body weight appearing by applying modified Broca's indices is generally greater in short build persons than in tall build persons and is more dominant especially in female group.

  • Recently, there has been much interest in the converged platform that enables the harmonized collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of various kinds of marine information by using the ICT means. Regarding such the converged platform, S-100 standards including the international hydrographic data model are being announced and various studies have been published based on the S-100 standards. However, the existing studies have presented simple solutions for only given problems on the converged service of the maritime information. They could not propose the design concept of the converged platform which makes it possible to provide the standardized and integrated services among the geospatial data, the real-time maritime data, and the next ENC. Therefore, we propose design and implementation details of the converged service platform for the geospatial and the maritime data based on the S-100, WMS, WMTS, WPS, SOS standards. The proposed platform has advantages of supporting both the S-57 and the S-101, supporting the converged services of heterogeneous geospatial data and ENC data, supporting the real-time services of sensor data such as weather, AIS, and CCTV, and supporting the development of various kinds of maritime systems such as ECDIS, ECS, VTS based on the WebApp service. Finally, we proved the effectiveness of our proposed platform through the actual implementation of the converged service of geospatial data, S-101 data, and KWeather data.

  • The adsorption structures of threonine on the Ge(100) surface were investigated using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. CLPES measurements were performed to identify the experimentally preferred adsorption structure. The preferred structure indicated the relative reactivities of the carboxyl and hydroxymethyl groups as electron donors to the Ge(100) surface during adsorption. The core-level C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s CLPES spectra indicated that the carboxyl oxygen competed more strongly with the hydroxymethyl oxygen during the adsorption reaction. Three among six possible adsorption structures were identified as energetically favorable using DFT calculation methods that considered the inter- and intra-bonding configurations upon adsorption onto the Ge(100) surface. These structures were O-H dissociated N dative inter bonding, O-H dissociated N dative intra bonding, O-H dissociation bonding. One of the adsorption structures: O-H dissociated N dative inter bonding was predicted to be stable in light of the transition state energies. We thus confirmed that the most favorable adsorption structure is the O-H dissociated N dative-inter bonding structure using CLPES and DFT calculation.

  • This study analyzed the chronology of children's cartoon through character while the children's cartoon section is planned at the Memorial Exhibition of 100th year of Korean Cartoon which will be held at the Contemporary Art Gallery in celebration of the 100th year after birth of Korean Cartoon. The approaching method based on character is regarded as the most proper and feasible in the identification of character and meaning of children's cartoon because the character in cartoon contains the bigger role and meaning than the descriptive structure of narration. The Committee of 100th Year of Korean Cartoon, Aicheorum which is a study association for children's cartoon and Cartoon My Love $Cafe^{42)}$ in Naver jointly selected the 70 cartoon characters. A brief history is established based on these characters through chronological classification in seven sectors of around 10 year session such as before 1950s of quickening period and liberation, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1000s, 1900s and after 2000. It examined the historical meaning, its reflection and characteristics focused on the cartoon character and the cartoonist which were well-known to everybody not only the display according to chronological order. The study intented the stereoscopic illumination on the children's cartoon and character which were favored beyond the generations. In addition, the similarity and human relation among cartoonist to cartoonist and character to character were analyzed and traced to identity the fact that children cartoon character is not individualistic being but it lies on the extension of tradition and trend of eternal cartoon history Finally, hopefully it will make a contribution to activate the pure creative children's cartoon in Korea through reminding the importance of character in cartoon, affirming the industrial value and reflecting the direction and perspective of pure creative children's cartoon.

  • Objective : Diagnosing acute cerebral infarction is crucial in determining prognosis of stroke patients. Although many serologic tests for prompt diagnosis are available, the clinical application of serologic tests is currently limited. We investigated whether $S100{\beta}$, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), D-dimer, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) can be used as biomarkers for acute cerebral infarction. Methods : Focal cerebral ischemia was induced using the modified intraluminal filament technique. Mice were randomly assigned to 30-minute occlusion (n=10), 60-minute occlusion (n=10), or sham (n=5) groups. Four hours later, neurological deficits were evaluated and blood samples were obtained. Infarction volumes were calculated and plasma $S100{\beta}$, MMP-9, D-dimer, and HSP70 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : The average infarction volume was $12.32{\pm}2.31mm^3$ and $46.9{\pm}7.43mm^3$ in the 30- and 60-minute groups, respectively. The mean neurological score in the two ischemic groups was $1.6{\pm}0.55$ and $3.2{\pm}0.70$, respectively. $S100{\beta}$, MMP-9, and HSP70 expressions significantly increased after 4 hours of ischemia (p=0.001). Furthermore, $S100{\beta}$ and MMP-9 expressions correlated with infarction volumes (p<0.001) and neurological deficits (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in D-dimer expression between groups (p=0.843). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) showed high sensitivity and specificity for MMP-9, HSP70 (AUC=1), and $S100{\beta}$ (AUC=0.98). Conclusion : $S100{\beta}$, MMP-9, and HSP70 can complement current diagnostic tools to assess cerebral infarction, suggesting their use as potential biomarkers for acute cerebral infarction.

  • This paper presents a high-speed Forward Error Correction (FEC) architecture based on three-parallel Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder for next-generation 100-Gb/s optical communication systems. A high-speed three-parallel RS(255,239) decoder has been designed and the derived structure can also be applied to implement the 100-Gb/s RS-FEC architecture. The proposed 100-Gb/s RS-FEC has been implemented with 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell technology in a supply voltage of 1.2V. The implementation results show that 16-Ch. RS-FEC architecture can operate at a clock frequency of 300MHz and has a throughput of 115-Gb/s for 0.13-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. As a result, the proposed three-parallel RS-FEC architecture has a much higher data processing rate and low hardware complexity compared with the conventional two-parallel, three-parallel and serial RS-FEC architectures.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the association between elevated S100B levels with brain tissue damage seen in abnormalities of head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; diffusion tensor imaging [DTI] sequence) in patients with status epilepticus (SE). Methods: An analytical observational study was conducted in children hospitalized at Dr Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, from July to December 2016. The patients were divided into 2 groups: SE included all children with a history of SE; control included all children with febrile seizure. Blood samples of patients were drawn within 24 hours after admission. SE patients also underwent cranial MRI with additional DTI sequencing. The Mann-Whitney test and Spearman test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Fifty-three patients were enrolled the study. In the 24 children with SE who met the inclusion criteria, serum S100B and cranial MRI findings were assessed. Twenty-two children admitted with febrile seizures became the control group. Most patients were male (66.7%); the mean age was 35.8 months (standard deviation, 31.09). Mean S100B values of the SE group ($3.430{\pm}0.141{\mu}g/L$) and the control group ($2.998{\pm}0.572{\mu}g/L$) were significantly different (P<0.05). A significant difference was noted among each level of encephalopathy based on the cranial MRI results with serum S100B levels and the correlation was strongly positive with a coefficient value of 0.758 (P<0.001). Conclusion: In SE patients, there is an increase of serum S100B levels within 24 hours after seizure, which has a strong positive correlation with brain damage seen in head MRI and DTI.

  • Objective This study aimed to determine whether simultaneous decreases in the serum levels of cell adhesion molecules (intracellular cell adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1], vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 [VCAM-1], and E-selectin) and S100 proteins within the first 24 hours after the return of spontaneous circulation were associated with good neurological outcomes in cardiac arrest survivors. Methods This retrospective observational study was based on prospectively collected data from a single emergency intensive care unit (ICU). Twenty-nine out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors who were admitted to the ICU for post-resuscitation care were enrolled. Blood samples were collected at 0 and 24 hours after ICU admission. According to the 6-month cerebral performance category (CPC) scale, the patients were divided into good (CPC 1 and 2, n=12) and poor (CPC 3 to 5, n=17) outcome groups. Results No difference was observed between the two groups in terms of the serum levels of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin, and S100 at 0 and 24 hours. A simultaneous decrease in the serum levels of VCAM-1 and S100 as well as E-selectin and S100 was associated with good neurological outcomes. When other variables were adjusted, a simultaneous decrease in the serum levels of VCAM-1 and S100 was independently associated with good neurological outcomes (odds ratio, 9.285; 95% confidence interval, 1.073 to 80.318; P=0.043). Conclusion A simultaneous decrease in the serum levels of soluble VCAM-1 and S100 within the first 24 hours after the return of spontaneous circulation was associated with a good neurological outcome in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors.
