Fabrication of Amino Acid Based Silver Nanocomposite Hydrogels from PVA- Poly(Acrylamide-co-Acryloyl phenylalanine) and Their Antimicrobial Studies

  • New silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-loaded amino acid based hydrogels were synthesized successfully from poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acryl amide-co-acryloyl phenyl alanine) (PAA) by redox polymerization. The formation of AgNP in hydrogels was confirmed by using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and XRD. The structure and morphology of silver nanocomposite hydrogels were studied by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which demonstrated scattered nanoparticles, ca. 10-20 nm. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed large differences of weight loss (i.e., 48%) between the prestine hydrogel and silver nanocomposite. The antibacterial studies of AgNP-loaded PAA (Ag-PAA) hydrogels was evaluated against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria. These Ag-PAA hydrogels showed significant activities against all the test bacteria. Newly developed hydrogels could be used for medical applications, such as artificial burn dressings.

  • Hybrid insulator pentacene thin film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated with thermally grown oxide and cross-linked polyvinylalcohol (PVA) including surface treatment by dilute ploymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) layers on $n^+$ doped silicon wafer. Through the optimization of $SiO_2$ layer thickness in hybrid insulator structure, carrier mobility was increased to above 35 times than that of the TFT only with the gate insulator of $SiO_2$ at the same transverse electric field. The carrier mobility of 1.80 $cm^2$/V-s, subthreshold swing of 1.81 V/decade, and $I_{on}$/ $I_{off}$ current ratio > 1.10 × $10^5$ were obtained at low bias (less than -30 V) condition. The result is one of the best reported performances of pentacne TFTs with hybrid insulator including cross-linked PVA material at low voltage operation.

  • As the physical properties of nematic liquid crystals vary with respect to temperature, the performances of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are highly dependent on temperature. Additionally, it is well known that the electro-optic characteristics of LCDs, such as transmittance and threshold voltage, also rely on the LCD switching modes. The temperature dependence of the electro-optic characteristics of the wide-viewing-angle LCD modes, such as in-plane switching (IPS), multidomain vertical alignment by patterned electrode (PVA), and fringe-field switching (FFS), have been studied, and the results showed that the FFS mode has lower temperature dependence compared to the IPS and PVA modes. Since the liquid crystal (LC) reorients in different ways in each mode, this result is associated with the temperature dependence of LC's bend and twist elastic constants, and also with the position of the main reorientation, either in the middle or on the surface of the LC layer.

  • The application of High Performance Concrete (HPC) for protecting bridge deck concrete with micro-silica, fly-ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag was introduced to North America in the early 1980's. This report introduces the literature reviews of high performance concrete for protecting concrete bridge deck and explains 2-different types of construction methods using this materials. One is high performance concrete overlay method and the other is full depth bridge deck method. Both methods have been successfully applied and demonstrated in north america. Especially, modified high performance concrete overlay method including silica-fume and PVA fiber has been successfully applied in korea also. Therefore, both methods that high performance concrete overlay and full depth bridge deck are considered as reasonable bridge deck protecting methods compared with the conventional bridge deck system using asphalt modified materials.

Preparation of Silver Nanoparticles Using AgNO3 Precursor as Carrier for Olefin/Paraffin Separation and the Effect Analysis of NO3- (올레핀/파라핀 분리용 운반체로서 AgNO3 전구체를 활용한 은 나노입자 제조 및 NO3-의 효과 분석)

  • In previous studies, a poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)/Ag nanoparicles (AgNPs)(precursor $AgBF_4$)/p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) composite membrane was prepared for olefin/paraffin separation and the performance of this composite membrane was maintained at a selectivity of 10 and a permeability of 15 GPU. However, since the price of $AgBF_4$ precursor is high, this study used $AgNO_3$ as a precursor of Ag nanoparticles which is competitive in terms of price. As a result, it was observed that the separation performance was not obtained because the existing $NO_3{^-}$ could surround AgNPs. In this study, we fabricated PEO, poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA), and polyether block amide-1657 (PEBAX-1657) polymer composite membrane using electron acceptor 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) for separation performance even when $AgNO_3$ was used as a precursor of Ag nanoparticles. As a result, it was analyzed that the performance was not observed regardless of the influence of the polymer and the electron acceptor, indicating that the anion of the precursor plays a crucial role in the separation performance.

Diffraction Efficiency Change in PVA/AA Photopolymer Films by SeO2 and TiO2 Nano Particle Addition (PVA/AA계 광 고분자 필름의 SeO2 및 TiO2 나노 입자 첨가에 의한 회절 효율 변화)

  • Photopolymer is a material for recording three dimensional holograms containing photo information. Photopolymer has been found to be a proper material due to many advantages such as high DE value, easy processing, and low price. Compositions of PVA, monomer, initiater and photosensitizer were determined by previous experiments and the compositions of $SeO_2$ and $TiO_2$ were considered as variable to find out the effects of $TiO_2$ on DE. The DE values were constant for the varying compositions of $TiO_2$ (0.1 mg~1.0 mg). In other words, $TiO_2$ is not directly effective on the DE values. Composition change experiments from $SeO_2$ 0.1 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.9 mg to $SeO_2$ 0.9 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.1 showed a maximum DE value of 73.75% at a component of $SeO_2$ 0.8 mg, $TiO_2$ 0.2 mg. It seemed that regardless of the amount of $TiO_2$, increasing the amount of $SeO_2$ gently increases DE`s. If nano particles are heavily added, transparent films could not be made due to the separation of particles by the solubility decrease. Photopolymer films could be made with high DE values for an extensive angle range if $TiO_2$ additions were kept minimum and $SeO_2$ additions were kept maximum.

  • 제제설계 및 컴퓨터 최적화기법을 응용하여 고형으로 바뀌는 Gel화 시간이 가장 짧은 기본처방을 구하고, Indomethacin을 주 약물로하여 약물방출에 영향을 줄 수 있는 PVA, PEG 및 Ethanol 을 독립변수로, 약물방출속도를 종속변수로 하여 중심 합성계획법에 따라 실험을 행하여 최적처방을 구한다. 최적처방에 의한 Soft Hydrogel 을 제조하여 약물방출속도 및 Rheometer 에 의한 유동특성을 측정하였다.

Effects of Some Factors on In Vitro Production of Embryos from Antral Follicle-Derived Porcine Oocytes III.   • This study was carried out to examine the effects of fertilization media and sperm concentration on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and development (IVD) of porcine oocytes matured in vitro. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were collected from antral follicles of porcine ovaries collected from abattoir, and were matured in vitro in modified NCSU-23 (mNCSU-23) supplemented with 10% porcine follicular fluid (pFF). After the fertilization by experimental scheme, putative embryos were developed in vitro in NCSU-23. The results are as follows. When the oocytes were fertilized in vitro in modified TBM or modified TLP-PVA by 1 ${\times}$10$^{5}$ sperm/$m\ell$, all of the fertilization parameters were not significantly different between two media. Subsequently, as these putative embryos were developed in vitro in NCSU-23, the percentage of oocytes cleaved and of blastocysts were not different between two media, either. When the oocytes were fertilized in vitro in mTBM by 5${\times}$10$^4$, 1${\times}$10$^{5}$ or 5${\times}$10$^{5}$ sperm/$m\ell$, all of the fertilization parameters were significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01) increased as sperm concentration was elevated. Subsequently, as these putative embryos were developed in vitro in NCSU-23, the percentage of oocytes cleaved and of blastocysts were significantly boosted (P<0.01) as sperm concentration at fertilization was elevated from 5${\times}$10$^4$ to 1${\times}$10$^{5}$ sperm/$m\ell$, but were not different between 1${\times}$10$^{5}$ and 5${\times}$10$^{5}$ sperm/$m\ell$.

  • This study deals with the preparation of polymeric electrolyte membranes having high durability for the application of fuel cells. The membranes under investigation were prepared the impregnation to porous polyethylene membranes with poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA), poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), and (PSSA-MA)3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA). To characterize the resulting membranes, the water contents, the contact angles, FT-IR, the proton conductivity and the the modulus were measured. The proton conductivity of 30% content of THS-PSA at $55^{\circ}C$ gave excellent $1.27{\times}10^{-1}S/cm$ and the mechanical strength was improved 7 times higher up to the THS-PSA content 15%, as a result, the durability was elevated extensively.

Selection and Technical Development for Seed Pelleting Material of Codonopsis lanceolata Trautv (더덕 종자의 펠렛팅을 위한 소재 탐색 및 기술개발)

  • This study was conducted to select Codonopsis lanceolata seed's new pelleting particulate materials and adhesives. Different adhesives (Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), Xanthan gum (XG), Arabic gum (AG)) and particulate materials (Illite, Diatomite, Pyrophyllite + Illite + Diatomite (PID), Pyrophyllite + Illite + Talc (PIT), Bentonite + Talc (BT)) were tested for seed pelleting. PID for Codonopsis lanceolata seed pelleting appeared to be the best particulate material. Among the pelleting adhesives, PVP was the best adhesive for seed pelleting, and the optimum concentration for germination of pelleting seed was 1 %. Germination rate of the pelleted seeds treated with PID particulate material and PVP adhesive was higher (86.8%) than those of raw seeds (85.5%). $T_{50}$ and MDG of pelleted Codonopsis lanceolata seed required five and eight days at soil moisture content of 50%, respectively.
