  • In this paper, the occurrence of a stopband phenomenon when an acoustic wave propagates through periodically corrugated ducts is discussed using theoretical and BEM analyses. A 2-D duct with sinusoidally corrugated upper and lower walls is considered. When the magnitude of the sinusoidal corrugation is sufficiently small compared to the duct's height, the wave equation is solved with the multiple scaling perturbation method. Then stopbands for Bragg and non-Bragg resonances are computed from the condition where frequency becomes a complex number. A 2-D BEM analysis is performed to compute insertion loss of the duct, and stopbands are confirmed as predicted by analytical analysis.

  • An 8 month-old male Maltese (weighing 2.0 kg) was referred with loud heart murmur at routine physical exam in local animal clinic. Electrocardiogram found left ventricular hypertrophy pattern (4.5 mV R-wave). Diagnostic imaging studies revealed the elongation of left ventricle (LV) with classic triple bumps on the main pulmonary artery, aorta and left atrium on the ventrodorsal view of radiograph. Echocardiography revealed patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) duct and continuous turbulent shunt flow (maximal velocity 4.83 m/s) between the aorta and pulmonary artery with left to right direction. The PDA in this dog was successfully closed through femoral vein (transvenous approach) using a 5 mm Amplatz$^{(R)}$ Canine Duct Occluder. To the best of author's knowledge, this is the first case of PDA occlusion treated with Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder through femoral vein.

  • The article represents an experimental investigation on friction and turbulent flow characteristics of free airflow through a rectangular duct fitted with semicircular ribs of uniform height (e = 3.5 mm) on one principle wall. The aspect ratio of the rectangular duct was AR= 5 where the duct height (H) was of 30 mm. Four different rib pitches (P) of 28 mm, 35 mm, 42 mm and 49 mm were used for constant rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh = 0.07) and constant rib height to channel height ratio (e/H = 0.11). The experimental results show some significant effects on pressure drop as well as turbulent characteristics at various configurations among different numbers of rib arrangements varying Reynolds number in the range of 15000 to 30000. Pressure transducer and hot wire anemometer were used for data acquisition of this experiment.

  • In order to minimize carbon emissions and greenhouse gas, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has become a major factor to be considered in recent years in a ship's design and operation phases. Energy-Saving Devices (ESDs) improve the EEDI of a vessel and make them environmentally friendly. In this research, the performance of an equalizing duct-type ESD installed upstream of a Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) Container Ship (KCS) model's propeller was investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Open-source CFD libraries, OpenFOAM, were used for computational analysis of the KCS with and without the ESD to verify the performance improvement. The flow field near the stern region and propulsive coefficients were considered for comparison. The results showed a considerable improvement when an ESD was used on the model. Using different sizes of the duct, the performance of the ESD was also compared. It was observed that with an increased duct size, the propulsive performance was improved.

  • An analysis of convection, in a fully developed laminar steady flow through the vertical square duct under the condition of variational symmetric heat flux, is considered. Finite element solution algorithm by Galerkin's method with triangular elements and linear interpolation polynominals for the temperature and velocity profiles are derived for the vertical square duct. The comparison of temperature distribution due to variational symmetric heat flux in the duct were made with available the other data when the condition of peripheral heat flux were uniform and zero. Numerical values for the dimensionless temperatures and Nusselt numbers at selected Rayleigh numbers and pressure gradient parameters were obtained at a few nodal points for the vertical square ducts and effects of corner in the duct were investigated.

  • Purpose : We reviewed the therapeutic results of various Duct-Occlud coils(pfm AG, $K{\ddot{o}}ln$, Germany) to evaluate the efficacy of the most-recently modified Duct-Occlud coil(Nit-Occlud) in the transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus(PDA), including large defects more than 4 mm in diameter. Methods : Two hundred and five patients who underwent percutaneous PDA occlusion using Duct-Occlud devices from March 1996 to December 2003 were enrolled and four types of Duct-Occlud [Standard(S), Reinforced(R), Reinforced reverse cone(RR) and Nit-Occlud(N)] were used in this study. The patients were followed up by echocardiogram and physical examination before discharge, one month, six months and 12 months after the procedure. Results : The rate of residual shunt according to the type of Duct-Occlud were as follows : S-54%, R-72%, RR-50%, N-14%(P<0.05 compared with other devices) at one month, S-25%, R-44%, RR-37%, N-0%(P<0.05 compared with other devices) at six months, S-8%, R-8%, RR-4%, N-0%(P<0.05 compared with S and R) at 12 months and later. Nit-Occlud coil showed the complete occlusion of PDA after six months of follow-up, even in 12 patients with relatively large PDA(>4 mm). Conclusion : The transcatheter closure of PDA using Duct-Occlud was an effective treatment and our study revealed that a Nit-Occlud coil which showed higher rate of occlusion even in PDA with large diameters over than 4 mm, was a more effective modality compared to previous devices.

  • The effects of Malloti Cortex Water Extract (MCWE), bergenin (isolated as an active component from MCWE), and acetylbergenin (synthesized from acetylation of bergenin) on the liver fibrosis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in rats. We studied hydroxypro1ine (HYP) as a marker of collagen accumulation in the liver, alanine aminotransferase (s-ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (s-AST), and alkaline phosphatase (s-ALP) as serum markers of liver cell damage induced by BDL, MCWE, bergenin, and acetylbergenin decreased towards normal the accumulated levels of HYP in the liver and the elevated serum levels of s-ALT, s-AST and 5-ALP. The results indicate that MCWE, bergenin, and acetylbergenin ameliorated the liver damage induced by BDL in rats.

  • Stall stagnations in the system of axial-flow compressors and ducts occur in transition from deep surge conditions to decayed or converged stall conditions. The present study is concerned with the boundaries between the deep surges and the stagnation stalls on the basis of analytical results by a code on surge transients analysis and simulation. The fundamental acoustical-geometrical stagnation boundaries were made clear from examinations of the results on a variety of duct configurations coupled with a nine-stage compressor and a single stage fan. The boundary was found to be formed by three parts, i.e., B- and A-boundaries, and an intermediate zone. The B-boundary occurs for the suction-duct having a length of about a quarter of the wave-length of the first resonance in the case of very short and fat plenum-type delivery duct. On the other hand, the A-boundary occurs for the long and narrow duct-type delivery flow-path having a length about a fifth of the wavelength and relatively small sectional area in the case of short and narrow suction ducts. In addition to this, the reduced surge-cycle frequencies with respect to the duct lengths are observed to have respective limiting values at the stagnation boundaries. The reduced frequency for the B-boundary is related with a limiting value of the Greitzer's B parameter. The tendency and the characteristic features of the related flow behaviors in the neighborhood of the boundaries were also made clearer.

  • Computational fluid dynamics was used to optimize an A/C duct. Three dimensional flow analysis in an automotive A/C duct was performed computationally using various turbulence models and compared numerical predictions such as outlet flow split, surface pressure distribution along the duct to experimental data. Additionally, we studied the effect of location variation of 2nd branch on exit flow ratio and could find optimal location of 2nd branch. The design of an A/C duct was modeled and calculated to enhance the airflow distribution in each outlet using the STAR-CD computational fluid dynamics software. In results, modified $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model allows a successful prediction of static pressure distribution particulary at around strong curvature but little improvement flow split. In the future, adoption of CFD to design an A/C duct with modified $k-\varepsilon$ model will bring benefits of producing more accurate prediction, and also give designers more detail information much more than now.
