An experiment to acoustically analyze the shape of gill-net in the current was conducted in Jaran Bay, Gosung, Korea on the 9th to 10th September(spring tide) and 28th to 29th September(neap tide) 2006. It was measured by a 3D underwater positioning system with a radio-acoustic linked positioning buoys. Six of 7 acoustic transmitters used in the experiment were attached on the float line of the gill-net and the other was fixed on the sea bed. During spring tide, the maximum movement of the gill-net was 27.0m(22:00) in the west(4.4cm/s, $311.9^{\circ}$) and 20.6m(04:00) in the east(3.9cm/s, $66.5^{\circ}$). The maximum extension of the gill-net(the distance between P1 and P6) was 119.8m(21:00, 11.6cm/s, $321.9^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 109.9m(23:00, 16.1cm/s, $88.5^{\circ}$). During neap tide, the maximum movement was 38.0m(20:00) in the east(9.6cm/s, $278.2^{\circ}$) and 11.0m(12:00) in the west(1.9cm/s, $232.1^{\circ}$). The maximum extension was 99.6m(14:00, 12.5cm/s, $94.7^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 85.0m(06:00, 9.0cm/s, $265.8^{\circ}$). During spring tide, the maximum height of the gill-net from the sea bed was 3.7m(02:00, 7.4cm/s, $151.6^{\circ}$) and the minimum was produced the three times as 1.5m. At that time, the current speed and direction was 17.9cm/s and $85.3^{\circ}$(23:30), 16.1cm/s and $249.4^{\circ}$(05:00), and 13.7cm/s and $291.4^{\circ}$(06:30), respectively. During neap tide, the maximum height was 3.6m(12:30, 2.1cm/s, $242.3^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 1.5m(14:00, 12.5cm/s, $94.7^{\circ}$).

While PFOS sodium salt ($C_8F_{17}SO_3Na$) was not degraded by microorganisms for 28 days, the 4 alternatives were biodegraded at the rates of 21.6% for $C_{25}F_{17}H_{32}S_3O_{13}Na_3$, 20.5% for $C_{15}F_9H_{21}S_2O_8Na_2$, 15.8% for $C_{23}F_{18}H_{28}S_2O_8Na_2$ and 6.4% for $C_{17}F_9H_{25}S_2O_8Na_2$, respectively. The acute toxicity test using Daphnia magna was conducted for 48 hours, the half effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) of PFOS sodium salt ($C_8F_{17}SO_3Na$) was evaluated in 54.5 mg/L. While the 4 alternatives did not show any effect at 500.0 mg/L. The surface tension of the PFOS salt ($C_8F_{17}SO_3Na$) is 46.2 mN/m at a concentration of 500.0 mg/L. While the surface tension of the 4 alternatives was found to be superior to PFOS sodium salt ($C_8F_{17}SO_3Na$). The surface tension of $C_{23}F_{18}H_{28}S_2O_8Na_2$ (20.9 mN/m) has the lowest, followed by $C_{15}F_9H_{21}S_2O_8Na_2$ (23.4 mN/m), $C_{17}F_9H_{25}S_2O_8Na_2$ (27.3 mN/m), $C_{25}F_{17}H_{32}S_3O_{13}Na_3$ (28.2 mN/m). The four kinds of alternatives ($C_{15}F_9H_{21}S_2O_8Na_2$, $C_{17}F_9H_{25}S_2O_8Na_2$, $C_{23}F_{18}H_{28}S_2O_8Na_2$, $C_{25}F_{17}H_{32}S_3O_{13}Na_3$) were found to be superior to PFOS sodium salt ($C_8F_{17}SO_3Na$) in terms of biodegradation, Daphnia sp. acute toxicity and surface tension, and thus they were considered applicable as PFOS alternatives. Especially biodegradation rate of $C_{15}F_9H_{21}S_2O_8Na_2$, $C_{23}F_{18}H_{28}S_2O_8Na_2$ and $C_{25}F_{17}H_{32}S_3O_{13}Na_3$ was relatively high as 15.8~21.6%, and Daphnia sp. acute toxicity and surface tension were considerably superior (surface tension 39~55%) to PFOS sodium salt. Therefore, these alternatives are considered to be available as an alternative of PFOS.

The occurrence of PZ-peptidase in Streptococcus sanguis and other oral bacteria was investigated utilizing washed whole cells as the enzyme source and PZ-pentapeptide as its substrate. Under the culture conditions employed in the present study. Streptococcus sanguis strains, fresh isolates as well as laboratory strains, produced a broad range of the enzyme activity (0.5-7.9 unit/mg protein). The strains of both Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli showed low levels of activity (0-0.5 unit/mg protein for S. mutans). As compared with the enzyme activities of other bacteria, a moderate range of activity was produced by the strains of Strptococcus mitis nad Strptoccus salivarius. Actinomyces strains, like those of S. sanguis, produced a varying amount of activity (0-9.8 unit/ mg protein). A possible involvement of the oral bacterial PZ-peptidase in the metabolism of human saliva proteins is discussed.
The total number of clinical materials collected from Dec 1, 2005 to Nov 30, 2006 in C. hospital was 63,133. Among these materials, the isolation of Staphylococcus spp. was 5,252 strains. Seventeen strains of Staphylococcus species were identified with an isolation range of 0.02-46.7%. The isolation ratios of Staphylococcus species were 7.8% (2,134/27,362) in female, 8.7% (3,118/35,807) in male and 8.3% (5,252/63,133) in both. The age-related frequencies of Staphylococcus species were 22.1% in the 60-69 year group, 19.3% in the 70-79 year group and 17.1% in the 50-59 year group. The isolation ratio of the 0-49 year group to the 50-over 80 year group were 1.74 times in female, 1.92 in male and 1.85 in both. The isolation frequency of Staphylococcus spp. was at its highest in April (9.9%) and at its lowest in February (6.8%) according to monthly analysis. According to seasonal variation, the isolation frequencies of Staphylococcus spp. were 27.0% in Summer, 25.9% in Spring, 23.9% in Fall and 23.2% in Winter. The clinical departments showing over 9% isolation rate against Staphylococcus spp. were critical care medicine (12.9%), department of pediatrics (11.6%), department of urology (9.8%) and department of neuro-surgery (9.1%). On the other hand, the lowest number was observed in the department of family medicine. The clinical material showing over 15% isolation rate against Staphylococcus spp. were 32.1% in urine (random urine and catheterized urine), 20.6% in blood and 16.0% in sputum.

Purpose : Matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-9 is known to breakdown the blood-brain barrier by degrading the extracellular matrix of the subendothelial basement membrane in meningitis. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase(TIMP)-1, a known inhibitor of MMP-9, has been postulated to inhibit the proteolytic activity of MMP-9 by bindng to MMP-9, but their interaction has not been fully understood yet. So far, there have been some reports on the relationship of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in bacterial meningitis, but few reports in viral meningitis. Furthermore, there has been no report on this in Korea. We investigated the concentrations of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of patients with viral meningitis and control subjects, and evaluated their relationship with other clinical parameters of meningitis. Methods : CSF and blood were obtained from 25 subjects with viral meningitis and 14 control subjects. After centrifugation, supernatants were stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ and we assayed concentrations of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 by the sandwich ELISA method. Results : Concentrations of CSF MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were significantly elevated in patients with viral meningitis, when compared with those in control subjects. Their serum levels showed no differences between the two groups. MMP-9 levels were closely correlated with TIMP-1 levels in the CSF($r_s=0.42$, P<0.05). CSF MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratios were significantly higher in patients with viral meningitis than those in the control subjects(P<0.05). Both CSF MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels positively correlated with CSF total leukocyte counts($r_s=0.43$, P<0.05, $r_s=0.48$, P<0.05). TIMP-1 levels positively correlated with total protein concentrations in the CSF($r_s=0.43$, P<0.05). Conclusion : MMP-9 and TIMP-1 may play an important role in the breakdown and maintenance of BBB in viral meningitis, respectively.
Background: Sperm-associated antigen 9 (SPAG9) has been recently proposed as a novel biomarker for early diagnosis of several human tumors, including ovarian, cervical and breast cancers. Its clinical value remains to be clarified for endometrial cancer (EC). In this study, we investigated the utility of serum SPAG9 levels in diagnosis of EC and its association with important clinicopathological parameters. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed at a tertiary women's referral center in Ankara, Turkey. Preoperative serum samples were collected from patients surgically treated for endometrial cancer between June 2012-April 2013. Similar aged women with a biopsy proven benign endometrium were used as controls. Serum SPAG9 levels were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method and assessed for links with clinicopathological factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess power of SPAG9 levels for EC prediction. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 63 women with EC and 27 with benign endometrium were included in the study. Mean age in the EC group was $58.7{\pm}1.1$. Median SPAG9 levels in the EC and control groups were 18.3 (range, 12.7-53.8) and 14.1 (range, 4.3-65.3), respectively (p<0.001). A cut-off value of 17 ng/ml for SPAG9 predicted presence of malignant endometrium with 74% sensitivity and 83% specificity [Area under curve (AUC)=0.82, p<0.001]. SPAG9 levels did not demonstrate any significant association with histological type, FIGO stage, tumor grade, size, myometrial invasion, lymphovascular space invasion, cervical involvement, adnexal involvement, peritoneal cytology or lymph node status (all p>0.05). Conclusions: Testing for SPAG9 may be useful for early detection of EC in asymptomatic high-risk women. Its role in post-treatment follow-up and early detection of recurrence should be assessed in future trials.

Cocoon shell ratios were 9.0% for Nd-s jam, 2.8% for N $d^{H}$ jam and 23.9% for Baegok jam. Cocoon sizes were 30.6${\times}$15.8 mm for Nd-s jam, 24.7${\times}$14.9 mm for N $d^{H}$ jam and 35.8 ${\times}$ 20.5 mm(1${\times}$w) for Baegok jam.w) for Baegok jam.
Previous work has identified a Streptomyces coelicolor gene, rns, encoding a 140 kDa protein (RNase ES) that exhibits the endoribonucleolytic cleavage specificity characteristic of RNase E and confers viability on and allows the propagation of E. coli cells lacking RNase E. Here, we identify a putative S. coelicolor 9S rRNA sequence and sites cleaved by RNase ES. The cleavage of the S. coelicolor 9S rRNA transcript by RNase ES resulted in a 5S rRNA precursor (p5S) that had four and two additional nucleotides at the 5' end and 3' ends of the mature 5S rRNA, respectively. However, despite the similarities between RNase E and RNase ES, these enzymes could accurately process 9S rRNA from just their own bacteria, indicating that these ancient enzymes and the rRNA segments that they attack appear to have co-evolved.
Infectivity of entomopathogenic nematodes and fungus was evaluated against fly larvae in the laboratory and outhouses. Mortalities of Muscina stabulans larvae were 96.7f 2.8% in Steinernema glaseri Dongrae strain, 90.0+0.0% in S. carpocapsae All strain, 86.7f 2.7% in Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Hamyang strain, and 70.0+9.4% in S. carpocapsae Pocheon strain on the filter paper.
