Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar gallinarum (S. gallinarum) is the agent of fowl typhoid, and the 9R vaccine is a commercial live vaccine for the prevention of fowl typhoid. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and immunogenicity of different brands of S. gallinarum 9R vaccine used in commercial laying chickens in Korea. All 9R strains originated from three different brands showed the same pattern in the biochemical and serological properties, and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) profile. But, there was a difference in rhamnose fermentaion, agglutination with Salmonella group $D_1$ antiserum and PFGE pattern between 9R vaccine strain and field S. gallinarum isolates. In laboratory and field trials for assesment of safety and immunogenicity of 9R vaccine, all of the three 9R vaccines showed the same safety in commercial laying chickens. In addition, there was a significant difference between the vaccinated and unvaccinated control groups in mortality and the re-isolation rate of the challenge strain from the tissues (p < 0.05), and no difference by the brands of 9R vaccine. The results from this study indicated that all three different brands of S. gallinarum 9R vaccine showed highly protection against mortality and organ invasion in commercial laying chickens exposed to virulent strains of S. gallinarum.
House dust mite (HDM) as a major allergen and damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) such as S100A8 and S100A9 trigger the pathogenesis and severity of allergic disease such as asthma. Regulation of neutrophil apoptosis is an important immune response and its dysregulation is involved in pathogenesis of allergic diseases. In this study, we examined the effects of HDM, S100A8 and S100A9 on spontaneous apoptosis of normal neutrophils. We considered the importance of the difference between in vitro and in vivo results and developed a new in vitro system consisting of a combination of immune cells and T helper (Th) cytokines. Extract of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP), S100A8, and S100A9 inhibited neutrophil apoptosis in culture of neutrophils alone without other leukocytes. DP and S100A8 more strongly suppressed neutrophil apoptosis in combinations of neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes or monocytes than in a culture of neutrophils alone. Anti-apoptotic effect of S100A9 in the mixture of immune cells was similar to that in neutrophils. DP, S100A8, and S100A9 blocked neutrophil apoptosis, regardless of pretreatment with a T helper (Th) 1 cytokine (IFN-$\gamma$), Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10), a Th9 cytokine (IL-9), a Th17 cytokine (IL-17), a Treg-producing cytokine (TGF-$\beta$). These findings may enable elucidation of allergy pathogenesis due to HDM and DAMP.
S100A8 and S100A9 are involved in pathogenesis of cancer by induction or inhibition of cancer as well as inflammation. In this study, we investigated the association of S100A8 and S100A9 with pathogenesis of leukemia using human monocytic leukemia cells, THP-1. The expression of TLR4, which is a known receptor of S100A8 and S100A9, was examined by using flow cytometry and Western blotting. THP-1 cells have high surface and cytosol expression of TLR4. S100A8 and S100A9 suppressed the cell survival, and this suppression was found to be associated with apoptosis because they increased the number of apoptotic cells in a dose- and a time-dependent manners. However, S100A8 and S100A9 had no effect on the survival and apoptosis of monocytes isolated from the peripheral blood. We next examined the apoptotic effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA), which are other ligands of TLR4, in THP-1 cells. Lipopolysaccharide had no effect on cell survival, but MPLA is effective on the cell apoptosis. These results suggest that S100A8 and S100A9 may regulate leukemia cell survival via TLR4, which is an essential receptor in the pro-apoptotic mechanism induced by S100A8 and S100A9. These findings may shed light on development of a possible therapeutic drug for leukemia treatment.
The mutagenicity of the river water of Nakdong river estuary was determined by Ames test using the blue rayon suspension method. Samples were collected from 10 sites in the estuary once in each season of 1998. The samples collected from the sites where industrial waste discharge on May were mutagenic, but the other samples were not mutagenic. The sample collected from the site 1 located near the industrial area (Hadan-dong) were highly mutagenic in the TA98 with (+S9) and without (-S9) mix as well as in the TA100 with (+S9) and without (-S9) S9 mix, suggesting that the river water of this site is polluted by direct and indirect mutagens of frame-shift type as well as direct and indirect mutagens of base-replacement type. The positive mutagenicity, although relatively low, was also detected in TA98 with (+S9) and without (-S9) S9 mix in the extract of the site 4 near the industrial area(Jangrim-dong), suggesting that the primary mutation type is frame-shift. The negative mutagenicity from July to December at the sites (1-4) near the industrial area seems to be affected by the low economic growth rate in 1998 in Korea. On the other hand, the negative mutagenicity in all extracts collected from the sites 5-10 near the residential area where living sewage discharge, suggests that the river water was not polluted by mutagens.
S100A8 and S100A9 are associated with myeloid cell differentiation, chemotactic activities, adhesion of neutrophils, and apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the contribution of S100A8 and S100A9 to differentiation of the human eosinophilic leukemia cell line, EoL-1. S100A8 and S100A9 increased the number of vacuole per one cell and the protein expression of EPO and MBP. Rottlerin, an inhibitor of protein kinase C delta ($PKC{\delta}$), inhibited the EoL-1 cell differentiation induced by S100A8 and S100A9. These results suggest that S100A8 and S100A9 may regulate the differentiation of eosinophilic progenitors. Moreover, these findings may shed light on elucidation of eosinophil differentiation due to S100 proteins.
HgS and HgS: Co crystals and films grown by the slow cooling and the chemical bath deposition method were used to measure their crystal structure and their optical absorption spectra. HgS and HgS: Co crystals are hexagonal structure with the lattice constant $a_0=4.155{\AA}$, $c_0=9.505{\AA}$ for HgS and $a_0=4.148{\AA}$, $c_0=9.462{\AA}$ for HgS and $a_0=4.135{\AA}$, $c_0=9.442{\AA}$ for HgS: Co, respectively. The optical energy gap of these crystals are given as 2.040 eV for HgS and 1.900 eV for HgS: Co, and the optical energy gap of these films were 2.440 eV for HgS and 1.940 eV for HgS: Co at room temperature, respectively.
Croaker and pork were cooked by four kinds of methods(boiled, broiled, deep fried, pan fried) and their extracts were extracted with 50% methanol. The Ames test were performed on these methanol extracts, employing Salmonella typhimurium tester strain TA98 and TA100, with and without S9 mix and after nitrite treatment. The methanol extracts of cooked croaker and pork showed mutagenicity between original weight 0.0125 g/plate and 0.1 g/plate in all strains and induced a higher mutagenicity in all strains with S9 mix than without S9 mix. In all kinds of cooking methods, pork extracts showed higher mutagenicities than croaker extracts and especially the extract of pan fried croaker and pork showed high mutagenicities with S9 mix. The extract after nitrite treatment showed higher mutagenicities than that after non treatment and after treatment with nitrite, the mutagenicities of extracts were higher on TA98 than TA100.
Temperature dependent thermoelectric power (TEP) of La$_{2.1}$ Sr$_{1.9}$ Mn$_3$O$_{10}$ system has been studied in the temperature range 80-373 K. In the low temperature ferromagnetic regime, TEP (S) follows an expression of formS=S$_{0}$ +S$_{1.5}$ T$^{1.5}$ +S$_4$T$^4$ over the wide range of temperature. The broad peak below the ferromagnetic transition and complicated temperature dependence of S may be understood on the basis of electron-magnon scattering as predicted for an itinerant ferromagnet. High temperature TEP data can be well fitted with Mott's small polaron hopping model.

In this study, we analyzed the meteorological elements, when large forest fires were occurred, The rate of precipitation was 13% of annual average precipitation. Especially, the stronger wind speed, lower humidity and rainfall than average annual record were the distinct feathers on the year when large forest fire occurred in east coast area in Kangwon region. The average, maximum and maximum instantaneous wind speed was 5.9 m/s, 11.3 m/s and 20.9 m/s when large forest fires occurred. The average, maximum and maximum instantaneous wind speed on large fire occurred were 1.8 m/s, 3.0 m/s and 6.9 m/s faster than and average wind speed when whole forest fires occurred. The results indicated that the large forest fire occurrence had a close correlation with meteorological elements.
