  • Nowadays, 60 percent of thermal power plants already have been operated over their own design life. These operations of old power plant over their design life have caused a fracture accident of degradation a loss of economic and human. Therefore, the new life assessment and prediction technology is necessary to improve the safety and reliability of high pressure and high temperature power plant facilities. In this paper, innovative electrochemical test method have been used and results have been compared to the conventional test. Finally, the electrochemical test is applied to the in-field HP turbine and a database is currently in progress for the development of the life assessment standard and procedure.

  • Positive effects such as significantly reducing traffic accidents caused by human error can be expected by the introduction of Automated vehicles (AV). However, as new traffic safety issues are expected to occur in the future due to errors in H/W or S/W of autonomous vehicles and lack of its function, it is necessary to establish a scenario to evaluate the driving safety of AV. Therefore, in this study, functional scenario was developed to evaluate the driving safety of AV based on traffic accident data of the National Police Agency. Using the GIS program, QGIS, traffic accident data that occurred in the toll gate and ramp sections of expressway were extracted and accident summary items were checked to classify the types of accident. In addition, based on the results of accident type classification, functional scenario were developed that contains various dangerous situations in the tollgate and ramp sections.

Estimating Benzene Exposure Level over Time and by Industry Type through a Review of Literature on Korea

  • The major purpose of this study is to construct a retrospective exposure assessment for benzene through a review of literature on Korea. Airborne benzene measurements reported in 34 articles were reviewed. A total of 15,729 individual measurements were compiled. Weighted arithmetic means [AM(w)] and their variance calculated across studies were summarized according to 5-year period intervals (prior to the 1970s through the 2010s) and industry type. Industries were classified according to Korea Standard Industrial Classification (KSIC) using information provided in the literature. We estimated quantitative retrospective exposure to benzene for each cell in the matrix through a combination of time and KSIC. Analysis of the AM(w) indicated reductions in exposure levels over time, regardless of industry, with mean levels prior to the 1980-1984 period of 50.4 ppm (n = 2,289), which dropped to 2.8 ppm (n = 305) in the 1990-1994 period, and to 0.1 ppm (n = 294) in the 1995-1999 period. There has been no improvement since the 2000s, when the AM(w) of 4.3 ppm (n = 6,211) for the 2005-2009 period and 4.5 ppm (n = 3,358) for the 2010-2013 period were estimated. A comparison by industry found no consistent patterns in the measurement results. Our estimated benzene measurements can be used to determine not only the possibility of retrospective exposure to benzene, but also to estimate the level of quantitative or semiquantitative retrospective exposure to benzene.

  • Ever since ancient times, earthquakes have been a major threat to the civil infrastructures and the safety of human beings. The majority of casualties in earthquake disasters are caused by the damaged civil infrastructures but not by the earthquake itself. Therefore, the efficient and accurate post-earthquake assessment of the conditions of structural damage has been an urgent need for human society. Traditional ways for post-earthquake structural assessment rely heavily on field investigation by experienced experts, yet, it is inevitably subjective and inefficient. Structural response data are also applied to assess the damage; however, it requires mounted sensor networks in advance and it is not intuitional. As many types of damaged states of structures are visible, computer vision-based post-earthquake structural assessment has attracted great attention among the engineers and scholars. With the development of image acquisition sensors, computing resources and deep learning algorithms, deep learning-based post-earthquake structural assessment has gradually shown potential in dealing with image acquisition and processing tasks. This paper comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art studies of deep learning-based post-earthquake structural assessment in recent years. The conventional way of image processing and machine learning-based structural assessment are presented briefly. The workflow of the methodology for computer vision and deep learning-based post-earthquake structural assessment was introduced. Then, applications of assessment for multiple civil infrastructures are presented in detail. Finally, the challenges of current studies are summarized for reference in future works to improve the efficiency, robustness and accuracy in this field.

  • Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependency on software to railway signalling system. While much efforts have been reported to evaluate embedded software safety for railway signalling systems, not so much systematic approaches to evaluate software safety testing. In this paper, we propose a adaption of automatic software testing tool in terms of the design & coding standard for railway signalling system. The test items for the design & coding standard suggested in this study related international standards and MISRA-C. It is anticipated that it will be greatly helpful for the evaluation on the software for railway signalling system.

  • It can be considered that the safety of software is combined with that of hardware, and also directly connected to system safety. Because the software in the railway system takes the form of Embedded that let it behave at the system level, instead of independent operation, the safety of the railway S/W is also important. The approach, for ensuring the quality and safety of those software, can be considered with two points of view. Those are views seeing from products, and from processes. The two points of approach are all necessary in the railway system. For the first of all, the process approach is to validate maturity of the organizations in accordance to the judging processes of organizations, which are specified by CMMI(Capability Maturity Model Integration) or SPICE(Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination: ISO/IECl5504). In this paper, as the first step of them, we are trying to find approaches to estimate the maturity of manufacturer and assessment organization in the railway system.

  • This paper presents the methods to acquire the Safety Certificate from Independent Safety Assessment based on the IEC standard62279 which is commonly applied to railway system for Automatic Train Control(ATC) system in accordance with Urban Maglev project. This also shows approach methods and relative activities for project life-cycle to accomplish and ensure the system requirements of ATC system, RAMS and S/W quality activities. Furthermore, the key tasks conducted with ISA are noted in detail. These kind of activities for software quality of ATC system to obtain Safety Certificate could be a CASE model to improve the quality of domestic railway system and products, and also contribute to the growth of railway business and toward the achievement of overseas' railway signaling markets.
