Purpose: This study was done to learn from the development of rural health nursing in developed countries. Method: A literature search was done using keywords such as "rural and nursing" or "rural and health" from the database CHINAL and website of institutions related to rural health and nursing. Results: In Australia, the type of rural health institution was categorized according to the population size and nursing service was done differently according to area. It is unique to Canada to have the Canadian Association of Rural and Remote Nursing, which published the survey report "the Nature of Nursing Practice in Rural and Remote Canada". In the U.S., the role of nurse practitioners in rural communities was relatively well developed and a diverse nursing care model was demonstrated. To improve health care access in rural communities, financial and political support by the governments has been part of long-term plans in the three countries. Conclusion: It is very informative to identity the difference and similarity in rural health nursing in three developed countries. For the future development of Korean rural nursing, suggestion can be made in terms of research, education and policy development.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the actual conditions of the floor area of skilled nursing facilities in rural area. The thorough investigation and observation works were made from the viewpoints of floor area of the skilled nursing facilities. This article discusses about the basic condition and the floor area for daily living activities of the elderly in 3 skilled nursing facilities in west gyeongnam province. As the result, There is a wide gap between floor area ratio of skilled nursing facilities. The characteristics of the private establishment skilled nursing facilities in the west gyeongnam province were figured out through the analysis of spatial composition in skilled nursing facilities for the elderly. The skilled nursing facilities in west gyeongnam mainly focus on the living environment orientated toward the bedroom. The difficulty is to encourage the communication between the skilled nursing facility patients because the facilities are composed of small semi-public zone.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the smoking behaviors and to identify the impact of depression, temperament, and characteristics of smoking experience on rural adolescents. Method: A survey using a self-administered questionnaire was done of 310 rural high school students. Using SPSS 12.0, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The smoking rate of rural high school students was higher than that of the national rate for this age group. Serious depression was observed in the rural high school students. There was a positive correlation among smoking experience, school records, novelty seeking and a negative correlation between smoking and cooperativeness. The significant predictors of smoking experience were type of school, satisfaction with school, school records, novelty seeking, reward dependence and cooperativeness. These factors accounted for 38.9% of variances in the smoking experience of rural adolescents. Conclusion: These results suggest that adolescents who exhibit factors identified in this study are regarded as having the potential to smoke, and this result proposes the basis for program development for the prevention of smoking and smoking cessation.

Purpose: To examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and differentiate factors associated with them in urban and rural areas by applying the Ecological Models of Health Behavior. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional design and convenience sample of 460 female adolescents. The instruments included the Adolescent Mental-Health Problem-Behavior Questionnaire (AMPQ-II) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: Depressive symptoms were confirmed in 15.7% of urban adolescents and 22.9% of rural adolescents (p<.05). In the urban group, perception of health and stress associated with school performance were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. In the rural group, academic/internet related problems and rule violations were significantly associated with depressive symptoms (p<.05). General life happiness, worry/anxiety, and mood/suicidal ideation were common factors in both urban and rural areas (p<.05). Conclusion: Multiple factors were associated with depressive symptoms, and those significant factors differed between urban and rural female youths. Accordingly, tailored approaches are required considering urban and rural differences. The approaches should include intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational levels of interventions.
Purpose: This study describes a case report of wound care performed by a community health practitioner for a rural older adult with diabetic ulcers. Methods: Data were collected from a rural older adult who had a diabetic lower extremity ulcer, and wound dressing was applied over 20 weeks after the skin graft operation. Results: The patient visited a primary healthcare post for regular ulcer care, and a community health practitioner applied appropriate wound dressings and managed the patient's diabetic condition. Conclusion: In rural areas, where healthcare resources are scarce compared with urban areas, rural nurses, such as community health practitioners, are primarily required to manage rural residents' health problems. Advanced nursing practices such as complicated wound care should also be appropriately provided to patients by enhancing rural nurses' competencies in the changing health care environment.

The purpose of this study is to have detailed data of the distribution, locations, and the amount of people in the waiting line of the nursing home. Also, we studied the accessibility to the facilities by using Web GIS to analyze the transit time it takes from the nursing home to health center and hospitals. We can provide the basic data that could contribute when future plans for the nursing homes' locations, health and medical policy are made. The results are as follows. 1. The nursing homes are stiffly concentrated in regions of Seoul and Gyeongi-do where large number of the elderly covered by long-term care insurance and the waiting line was very long for the elderlies to enter the nursing homes. In these cities of Ulsan and Jeju where number of the elderly covered by long-term care insurance is relatively small, there were less facilities. 2. The nursing homes located in urban areas had higher occupancy rate and higher number of people in the waiting line. 3. The average time taken by driving from the nursing homes and health center was 10 minutes and there was not a noticeable difference between the cities. Driving from the nursing homes to hospitals in rural areas took 22 minutes which is 2.5 times of the time taken for urban areas. Daegu-si and Incheon-si had relatively short distance from the nursing homes and the hospitals while Jeju-do had the furthest. For rural areas, it is needed for health center to be equipped with a wider medical coverage, have closely connected with hospitals to minimize the differences they have from ones in rural areas. It is also needed to have ambulances equipped for tele-medical examination and treatment system.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe health management experience in rural older women. Methods: Qualitative data were collected by focus group interviews with 25 participants from July to September, 2007. All the interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by the content analysis method. Results: Seven main categories were conceptualized, "health concept", "health status", "disease management", "activity for health management", "dependence on the primary health care post", "relationships with families and others", "hope for the rest of life". Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that for health promotion in older women in rural regions, it is important to consider the usefulness of an incorporated program that combines agricultural work with health activity. In addition, complex programs that combine welfare services with health services are needed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the relationships of self-esteem, health status and self-care, and compare them between the rural and urban elderly. Method: The subjects were 126 persons with age over 65: rural(69 persons) and urban(57 persons). The data was collected from 1st Sep to 10th Oct, 2004 by questionnaires, and was analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, Least Significant Difference and Pearson's correlation coefficient in the SPSS-Win 10.0. Results: The level of self-esteem, health status and self-care of the elderly in rural were lower than those of the elderly in urban. The higher group self-esteem in the rural elderly shows more health status and self-care than the lower group. Significant differences between two groups in the urban elderly were not found. Self-esteem, health status and self-care were positively correlated each other in the rural elderly. Significant correlations were found between self-esteem and health status, and between self-esteem and self-care in the rural elderly. Conclusion: Self-esteem forms the foundation of psychosocial health and provides a measure for the quality of life of the elderly in long term care. As nursing is in a unique position to promote self-esteem, the nurse can plan and provide nursing intervention with the consideration of characteristics of the rural and urban elderly to promote the self-esteem, health status and self-care of the elderly.

Methods: The participants were a total of 58 elderly people, 29 in the control group and 29 in the experimental group living in the rural areas. Disaster response knowledge, attitude toward disaster, and disaster and safety practice were measured in both groups after the intervention. The program consisted of 4 weeks. The data were analyzed by x2 test and independent t-test with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: The experimental group who participated in the storytelling-based disaster and safety education program showed a significant increase in disaster response knowledge, and disaster and safety practice scores compared to the control group. Conclusion: It was found that the storytelling-based disaster and safety education programs were effective in increasing disaster response knowledge, and disaster and safety practice. We hope that the storytelling-based disaster and safety education programs can be used in the elderly nursing curriculum in the future, and we suggest it should be applied as a nursing intervention.
This study aims to develop some guidelines on visiting nursing services for the management of hypertension patients at home in the rural areas of Korea. Firstly, in-depth interviews were given to the eight staff in charge of visiting nursing services in the rural health centers from June 1, 1999 to August 30, 1999. And then, their five patients with hypertension were under participatory observation. At the same time, literature review was conducted. Through those methods, some preliminary items were derived and the initial guidelines were drawn up. They were referred to ten experts, so that their validity was tested with Delphi Technique. Through the verification of their validity, they were complemented into the final ones. The total number of the items in the final guidelines was 22. By areas, they could be categorized as follows; eight items as skilled nursing care, five as general nursing care, three as guidance for diet, two as guidance for exercise, one as hospice care, and one as connection with social welfare services. By methods of activities, 13 items were classified as assessment, two as intervention, two as demonstration, and 17 as explanation. On the basis of the guidelines, nursing services are recommended to be divided and performed; general nursing activities by nurse aids and skilled nursing activities by public health nurses.
