  • This study was conducted to effectively develop rural tourism in Korea. For the purpose, tourism that can develop with local industries and cultures together was designated as life-type tourism and development models of such tourism were reviewed based on an understanding that province-oriented tourism is necessary. An analysis of three actual cases of Japan led to following results. First, life-type tourist destinations can be developed in connection with making local areas based on their special themes, can be developed in relation to their life cultures based on their peculiar life cultures and can be developed in creative forms using characteristic environment and organizational culture of those areas. In pursuing life-type tourist attractions, it will be possible to make practical development using it with those three basic models. Second, it is important to form a flow covering the entire regions based on their own special themes, to build cyclical structure of regions and tourism and tourism and industries and to create overall conditions that can help local residents get benefits and join together, in order to develop such life-type tourist destinations. Development of life-type resort tourist destinations needs roles of practical organizations that can effectively manage them, but such organizations should be dynamic and should be distant from management of money as much as possible.

  • BACKGROUND: Mathematical model such as GLEAMS have been developed and successfully applied to upland fields to estimate the level of pesticide residues in soil. But, the GLEAMS model rarely applied to the Korean conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: To evaluate pesticide transport in soil residue using the GLEAMS model from pepper plot, Alachlor, Endosulfan, Cypermethrin and Fenvalerate were applied for standard and double rate. Soil sampling was conducted and decaying patterns of pesticides were investigated. Observed climate data such as temperature and irrigation amount were used for hydrology simulation. The observed pesticide residue data of 2008 were used for parameter calibration, and validation of GLEAMS model was conducted with observed data of 2009. After calibration, the $K_{oc}$ (Organic carbon distribution coefficient) and WSHFRC (Washoff fraction) parameters were identified as key parameters. The simulated concentrations of the pesticides except Fenvalerate were sensitive to $K_{oc}$ parameter. Overall, soil residue concentrations of Alachlor, Cypermethrin and Fenvalerate were fairly simulated compared to those of Endosulfan. The applicability of the GLEAMS model was also confirmed by statistical analysis. CONCLUSION(s): GLEAMS model was eligible for evaluation of pesticide soil residue for Alachlor, Cypermethrin and Fenvalerate.

  • Comprehensive rural village development projects were launched by MAF(Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) and KARICO (Korea Agricultural and Rural Infrastructure Cooperation). Since 2004, they received much attention for rural development policy, such as the bottom-up approach, inducing participation of residents and enhancing regional capacity. However, there still remain several problems to be solved. The purpose of this study was to suggest methodologies to facilitate residents' participation in comprehensive rural village development projects by literature review. The core problems of comprehensive rural village development projects in the planning stage were the conflicts among residents and the lack of resident capacity for rural development. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made to facilitate the residents' participation. In order to reinforce the residents' participation, the mediating skills of conflicts among residents and the strategies for strengthening the residents' capacity should be introduced in comprehensive rural village development projects.

  • The objectives of this study were 1) to identity the living conditions of old women at rural area, 2) to inquire of the activities for extra income 3) to Provide information on the social service program development for old rural women. Data were collected by interview with the questionaire from 396 old rural women in Korea. In analyzing data, $x^2$-test has been produced by S A S program package at Rural Development Administration. The major results were as follows ; 1. The average age was 69.7years old of the subjects, illiteracy was 54.1%, widows was 58.6%, and the 18.4% of elderly have led a solitary life. Also, the degree of health care was very low. 2. The source of living costs in most old rural women lay on agricultural income. Also, because of the educational expenditure for their children, etc., they led to poverty, and then could not provide for their old age. 3. In spite of the 60.4% of the old women did farming, a lot of them wishes to have a side job. The reasons why they wish to do a side job were making money, spending their time in working, being proud before their children, etc.. 4. According as they rely on their husband, the eldest son and his wife, for the psychological, physical, economical support, their position among family was low. Therefore, only the 43.3% of old women were satisfied with their life. 5. Finally, in the result of this case study, the old women, who particpate in the extra income promoting program, were satisfied with their rural life, and their social position were high rather than elswhere.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and Quality of Life (QoL) between urban and rural residents in Koreausing data from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Methods: This study was analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 program (IBM SPSS Statistics), and a t-test was performed for difference between GOHAI and QoL, and a multiple regression analysis was used for association between the independent and dependent variables with confounding variables corrected. The statistical significance was p<0.05. Results: Urban residents' average QoL was statistically significantly higher rural residents'(Table 1, p>0.05). For subjects under the age of 65, the QoL increased by 0.30 points for urban residents and 0.39 points for rural residents according to GOHAI increased by one unit (Table 2, p>0.05). Also, for subjects aged 65 years or older, the QoL increased by 0.42 points for urban residents and 0.61 points for rural residents according to the GOHAI, increasing by one unit (Table 3, p>0.05). Conclusion: Through the results of this study, the quality of life of rural residents was lower than that of urban residents. The GOHAI had a stronger impact on QoL among rural residents than in urban areas. In order to address the disparity in QoL between urban and rural residents, it was believed that policies aimed at improving oral health for rural residents should b etaken in to account.

  • This study aimed at setting up the evaluation indicators system by rural village types to identify systematically the multi-valuedness embedded in rural villages. AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was used for evaluating the relative importance weight evaluation of each indicator and quantitative analysis of rural village through computer works. The importance weight of evaluation indicators was converted into the score on the basis of maximum 1,000 point to increase the practicality. As a result, characteristics of 5 rural village types(Basic life-supporting, Agricultural promotion, Marketing/processing oriented, Urban-rural communication, Life-style choice types) differed in score of classified indicators. Also, These results are expected to be possible to quantitatively evaluate characteristics by rural village types.

  • This study developed a settlement environment diagnostic indices (SEDI) of rural villages which can apply to analyze variable conditions of villages having development projects. The index consists of 5 diagnostic areas (first level) with 13 items (second level), including detail indices of 40 criteria (third level) defined by specialists' brainstorming process. In order to develop the index system, object-oriented approach was used to extract the 5 diagnostic areas (infra-basic settlement facility, life condition & environmental resources, industry & economic infrastructure, community, and residents) from rural villages. For the 40 criteria, it was introduced a quantification method that all villages have absolute values in national level, not relative value between villages within an unit area. The diagnostic diagram and table were developed to evaluate the villages compositively. The developed SEDI was applied to study areas, 56 villages in 2 subdivision areas of county, located on county of Keumsan. Applicability of the index system, database system should be developed with the surveying method of data in village level.

  • In this study, the living standard and satisfaction level of urban people who moved to rural areas researched. Through these criteria, we could analyze people's perceptions of the current rural life. We would like to present this study as a base for improvement for those who seek a better life in a rural environment. The result of this study is as follows; The specific goals and need of our target group depend on individual characteristics, occupation and age etc. Therefore, the support system should sensibly consider their personal needs. In addition to this, the flow of information between these people should be changed from theoretical perspective to factual perspective. The new rural tenants obtained information on rural life mostly from private channels such as their acquaintances. Organizations responsible for providing information do not offer useful factual information on agrotechnology and financial support. Nevertheless, they are mainly focused on conceptual and ideological information.
