  • The CANDU 6 reactor assembly consists of an array of 380 pressure tubes, which are installed horizontally in a large cylindrical vessel, the Calandria, containing the low pressure heavy water moderator. The pressure tube is located inside the calandria tube and the annulus between these tubes, which forms a closed loop with $CO_2$ gas recirculating, is called the Annulus Gas System(AGS). It is designed to give an alarm to the operator even for a small pressure tube leak by a very sensitive dew point meter so that he can take a preventive action for the pressure tube rupture incident. To judge whether the operator action time is enough or not in the design of Wolsong 2,3 & 4, the Leak Before Break(LBB) assessment is required for the analysis of the pressure tube failure accident. In order to provide the required data for the LBB assessment of Wolsong Units 2, 3, 4, a series of leak detection capability tests was performed by injecting controlled rates of heavy water vapour. The data of increased dew point and rates of rise were measured to determine the alarm set point for the dew point rate of rise of Wolsong Unit 2. It was found that the response of the dew point depends on the moisture injection rate, $CO_2$ gas flow rate and the leak location. The test showed that CANDU 6 AGS can detect the very small leaks less than few g/hr and dew point rate of rise alarm can be the most reliable alarm signal to warn the operator. Considering the present results, the first response time of dew point to the AGS $CO_2$ flow rate is approximated.

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through parti-tioned opening. Such exchange flow may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with a opening on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Flow measurements are made with partitioned opening for parti-tion rations $H_p/H_1$ in the range 0 to 1 where $H_p$ and $H_1$ are partition length and height of the open-ing respecticely. In the case of $H_p/H_1$ of 0 flow passages of upward flow of the helium and down-ward flow of the air within the opening are unseparated (bidirectional) and the two flows interact exchange flow rate is minimum through range of the partition ratios, Two flow zones i.e. separat-ed(unidirectional)flow zone and unseparated(bidirectional) flow zone exist with increasing the partition. length, The exchange flow rate increases with increasing the separated flow zone. It is found that a maximum exchange flow rate exists at $H_p/H_1$ of 1. As a result fo comparison of the exchange flow rates by changing the partition ration the fluids interaction in the unseparated zone is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

  • It has been reported that some events of a rupture of seam generator tube have occurred in nuclear power plants around the world. Main causes of the leakage are from various types of corrosion in the steam generator(SG) tubings. Primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) of steam generator tubings have occurred in many tubes in Korean plant, and they were repaired using sleeves or plugs, In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to ascertain the leak behavior of the tubings. A high pressure leak and burst testing system was manufactured. Various types of Electro Discharged Machined (EDM) notches were developed on the SG tubes. Leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the tubes at room temperature. Burst pressure of the part through wall defected tubes depends on the defect depth, Water flow rates after the burst were independent of the t1aw types; tubes having 20 to 60 mm long EDM notches showed similar flow rates regardless of the defect depth. A fast pressurization rate gave the tube a lower burst pressure than the case of a slow pressurization.

  • Recently the thoracic injuries have been markedly increasing due to the vast increase of traffic accident, industrial disaster, and incidental accident as well as the frequent use of the murderous weapons including gun or rifle. Because the thoracic injuries could involve the heart, lung, and great vessels, and would influence the lives, prompt diagnosis and adequate treatment are essential. Most of thoracic injuries can be managed with the conservative treatment and simple surgical procedure such as closed thoracostomy, but certain cases require open thoracotomy to preserve lives and to return to their normal environment. The authors have analysed the result of 53 cases of open thoracotomy after thoracic injuries mainly according to the patient`s chart review. The mean age was 33.4 years old and male to female ratio was about 5: l. Injury mechanisms that elicited thoracic trauma indicated for open thoracotomy were penetrating[47%] and non-penetrating[53%] injuries. The Most common type of the thoracic lesion was hemothorax with or without pneumothorax and diaphragm rupture was the second. 58\ulcornero of thoracic injuries were accompanied by abdominal injuries and 47% by bone fractures. 34 patients were operated within 24 hours after injury and their average elapsed time was 13.6 hour. The remained patients were operated after 24 hours and their average elapsed time was 7.8 days. 71 cases of operative procedures containing some overlappings were performed: diaphragm repair[28], bleeding control[12], pulmonary and cardiac repair[4 cases] Postoperative complication rate was 32.1% and operative mortality rate was 9.4%[5/53].

  • Intraabdominal complications after cardiac surgery are infrequent, but often fatal. From 1985 to 1993, a total of 1241 cardiovascular operations requiring cardiopulmonary by pass were performed at Pusan Paik Hospital. A total of 16 intraabdominal complications occurred, represe ting a 1.3% incidence. Complications included enterocolitis in six, hepatitis in three, gastric bleeding in two, erosive gastritis in one, cholecystitis in one, spleen rupture in one, epididymitis in one, inguinal hernia in one patient. The overall mortality rate was 12.5% (2 of 16). Three of the 16 patients underwent surgical intervention, and one died. We concluded that intraabdominal complications after cardiac surgery are associated with a high mortality rate, so when evidence of an acute abdominal symptom is observed or conservativi medical treatment fails to improve symptoms, prompt early surgical intervention should be performed.

  • An anorthite-based traditional ceramic was developed by adding secondary flux materials to a mixture of kaolin and $CaCO_3$ in order to minimize the deformation during the sintering process. Three flux materials, feldspar, talc, and frit, were evaluated by comparison with two commercial chinaware bodies. Anorthite body with glass frit exhibited poor firing shrinkage. Poor mechanical properties (modulus of rupture, MOR < 30 MPa) was observed for the bodies with feldspar. Another anorthite body was formulated with wollastonite as a Ca source. The fired body showed a MOR of 81 MPa and a shrinkage rate of 6% when wollastonite was added up to 50%. In the XRD analysis, the phase ratio between anorthite and quartz was the highest in the specimen with 50% wollastonite addition. Homogeneous and relatively small closed pores were observed in the microstructural analysis. These results suggest that a ceramic body formulated with 50% kaolin and 50% wollastonite can be fired at $1200^{\circ}C$ with a 6% firing shrinkage rate, giving rise to minimal sintering deformation.

  • Creep tests for Titan were carned out using constant-load at $600^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$. Material constants necessary to predict creep life were acquired from the experimental creep data. And the applicability of Monkman-Grant(M-G) and modified M-G relationships was discussed. It was discovered the log-log plot of M-G relationships between the rupure time(tr) and he minimum creep rate(${\varepsilon}_m$) was conditional on test temperatures. The slop of m was 2.75 at $600^{\circ}C$ and m was 1.92 at $700^{\circ}C$. However; the log-log plot of modified M-G relationships between $t_r/\varepsilon_r$ and $\varepsilon_m$ was indpendent on stresses and temperatures. That is the slop of m' was almost 3.90 in all the data. Thus, change M-G relationships to creep life prediction could be vtilized more reasonably than that of M-G relationships for type Titan. It was divided that the constant slopes never theless of temperatures of practical stresses in the modified relationship were due to an intergranular break grown by wedge-type cauities.

  • Near-fault ground motion with directivity or fling effects is significantly influenced by the rupture mechanism and substantially different from ordinary records. This class of ground motion has large amplitude and long period, exhibits unusual response spectra shapes, possesses high PGV/PGA and PGD/PGA ratios and is best characterized in the velocity and the displacement time-histories. Such ground motion is also characterized by its energy being contained in a single or very few pulses, thus capable of causing severe damage to the structures. This paper investigates the characteristics of near-fault pulse-like ground motions and their implications on the structural responses using new proposed measures, such as, the effective frequency range, the energy rate (in time and frequency domains) and the damage indices. The paper develops also simple mathematical expressions for modeling this class of ground motion and the associated structural responses, thus eliminating numerical integration of the equations of motion. An optimization technique is also developed by using energy concepts and damage indices for modeling this class of ground motion for inelastic structures at sites having limited earthquake data.

  • An effect is made in this study to deepen understanding of small punch(SP) creep testing which has been a round for about 10 years as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial creep testing. Even though considerable numbers of SP creep test program have been performed, most of the tests were aimed at measuring creep rupture lives only. Very flew studies showed interest on the meaning of what we were really measuring during the SP creep tests. In this paper meanings of the parameters measured during the SP creep testing, such as punch load and punch displacement rate are investigated using finite element analysis. It was shown that the measured parameters must represent the stress and strain rates of the material at the annular region located at about 0.65 mm from the center of the SP specimen. The material in this location would go through constant maximum stress and strain rate during the testing. Experimental verification is also discussed.

  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flows through parti¬tioned opening and two-opening. Such exchange flows may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with the two types of small open¬ing on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. In the case of exchange flow through the partitioned opening, flow passages of upward flow of the helium and downward flow of the air within the opening are separated by vertical partition, and the two flows interact out of entrance and exit of the opening. Therefore, an experiment of the exchange flow through two-opening is made to investigate effect of the fluids interaction of the partitioned opening sys¬tem. As a result of comparison of the exchange flow rates between the two types of the opening system, it is found that the exchange flow rate of the two-opening system is larger than that of the partitioned opening system due to absence of the effect of fluids interaction. Finally, the fluids interaction between the upward and downward flows through the partitioned opening is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow.
