The paper describes a study about effects of upstream hills on design wind loads using two mathematical approaches: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Artificial Neural Network (NN for short). For this purpose CFD and NN tools have been developed using an object-oriented approach and C++ programming language. The CFD tool consists of solving the Reynolds time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model using body-fitted nearly-orthogonal coordinate system. Subsequently, design wind load parameters such as speed-up ratio values have been generated for a wide spectrum of two-dimensional hill geometries that includes isolated and multiple steep and shallow hills. Ground roughness effect has also been considered. Such CFD solutions, however, normally require among other things ample computational time, background knowledge and high-capacity hardware. To assist the enduser, an easier, faster and more inexpensive NN model trained with the CFD-generated data is proposed in this paper. Prior to using the CFD data for training purposes, extensive validation work has been carried out by comparing with boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) data. The CFD trained NN (CFD-NN) has produced speed-up ratio values for cases such as multiple hills that are not covered by wind design standards such as the Commentaries of the National Building Code of Canada (1995). The CFD-NN results compare well with BLWT data available in literature and the proposed approach requires fewer resources compared to running BLWT experiments.
The dynamic stability of railway vehicle has long been one of the important issues in railway safety. The dynamic simulator has been used as a tool for investigating the dynamic stability of railway vehicles and wheel/rail interfaces. In particular, small scale simulators have been widely used in laboratory studies instead of full scale roller rigs which can be quite costly and rather inconvenient for testing out the effect of diverse design parameters. But techniques for design of a small scale simulator for the fundamental study about the dynamic characteristics of the wheel-rail systems and the bogie systems have not been well developed in Korea. Therefore, a research on the development of a small scale simulator for investigating bogie dynamics needs to be undertaken. The present paper investigates design of a small-scaled derailment simulator and the design of a small scale bogie. The simulator developed can be used to investigate the effect of diverse parameters such as attack angle, wheelbase and cant on dynamic behavior of the bogie and key dynamic performance parameters such as derailment coefficient and critical speed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to guide the operation managers who plan daily production of large mass-processing facility that services multi-customers with multi-product, small-batch item characteristics by providing the practical best production quantity and the inventory allowed to build. Methods: Close observation of a subcontract paint-shop operator captured the daily decision process which was reflected in the subcontractor-unique mathematical model and the system dynamics simulation model. Multiple simulations were run to find the practical best production quantity and the maximum allowable stock level of inventory that did not undermine the profit from practical best daily production. Actual data and a few constant values were obtained from the firm under study. Results: While the inventory holding cost for the customer-owned material harms the total profit of the subcontractor, the running cost of the processing facility hinders production in small batches. This balances the maximum possible productions and results in practical best daily production which can be found through simulation runs with actual data. The maximum level of stocked inventory is deduced from the practical best daily production. Conclusion: To build a large volume that enables economy-of-scale production, operators should deal with multi-product small-batch items from multiple customers. When the planned schedule of the time and amount of material in-flow tend not to be reliable, operators can find it practical to execute level production across the planning horizon instead of adjusting to day-to-day in-flow fluctuations.

A magnetically levitating capsule train, which runs inside the sub-vacuum tube, can reach ultra-fast speeds by dramatically reducing the aerodynamic drag and friction. The capsule train uses the superconductor electrodynamic suspension (SC-EDS) method for levitation. The SC-EDS method has advantages, such as a large levitation gap and free of gap control, which could reduce the infra-construction cost. On the other hand, disadvantages, such as the large variation of the levitation-guidance gap and small damping characteristics in levitation-guidance force, could degrade the running stability and ride comfort of the capsule train. In this study, a dynamic analytical model of a capsule train based on the SC-EDS was developed to analyze the running dynamic characteristics. First, as important factors in the capsule train dynamics, the levitation and guidance stiffness in the SC-EDS system were derived, which depend non-linearly on the velocity and gap variation. A 3D dynamic analysis model for capsule trains was developed based on the derived stiffness. Through the developed model, the effects of the different running speeds on the ride comfort were analyzed. The effects of a disturbance from infrastructure, such as the curve radius, tube sag, and connection joint difference, on the running stability of the capsule train, were also analyzed.

A capsule train runs inside a sub-vacuum tube and can reach very high speed due to the low air resistance. A capsule train uses a superconducting electrodynamic suspension (SC-EDS) method for levitation, which allows for a large levitation gap and does not require gap control. However, SC-EDS has inherent characteristics such as the large gap variation and a small damping effect in the levitation force, which can degrade the running stability and ride comfort. To overcome this, a stability improvement device should be designed and applied based on dynamic analysis. In this study, a 1/10 small-scale testbed was developed to replicate the dynamic characteristics of a capsule train and investigate the performance of stability improvement devices. The testbed is composed of a 6-degree-of-freedom Stewart platform for the realization of bogie motion, a secondary suspension with a running stabilization device, and a carbody. Based on the dynamic similarity law proposed by Jaschinski, the small-scale testbed was manufactured, and a bogie motion algorithm was applied with the consideration of guideway irregularity and levitation stiffness. The experimental results from the testbed were compared with simulation results to investigate the performance of the testbed.

Piston-cylinder system are widely used in power engineering applications. In reciprocating refrigeration compressors, where extremely low friction losses are required, ringless pistons are being used to diminish the friction between piston rings and cylinder wall. Since the ringless piston has the freedom of lateral motion there is a potential danger that it will occasionally hit the cylinder wall while moving up and down along it's axis. A good design must therefore provide a smooth and stable reciprocating motion of the piston and ensure that the fluid film separating the piston from the cylinder wall is maintained all times. And the compromise between refrigerant gas leakage through the piston-cylinder clearance and the friction losses is required utilizing a dynamic analysis of the secondary motion for the high efficiency compressor. To this end, the computer program is developed for calculating the entire piston trajectory and the lubrication characteristics as functions of crank angle under compressor running conditions. The results explored the effects of some design parameters and operating conditions on the stability of the piston, the oil leakage, and friction losses.

Recently, the speed of a train has been increased. So the trains are being exposed to wind more severely than before. Because of the operation of high speed trains and lightweight of the train, risks of train derailment have being increased. In this study, aerodynamic effects of a newly designed high speed train, HEMU-400x, are evaluated. For aerodynamic effect evaluation, analysis method is selected by examining the safety standards for high speed train. The condition of aerodynamic effects is selected by adverse effect conditions. In order to calculate $C_s$ coefficients, numerical analysis is conducted. Using $C_s$ coefficients, the side force is calculated. Through dynamics analysis, derailment and wheel unloading are obtained. Using these results, derailment evaluation is performed.
This is a paper intended for initial stage of vehicle modeling and design. The needs to determine a variety of vehicle suspension parameters required for initial design has been difficult and time-consuming task. In order to facilitate a concise and efficient presentation of initial vehicle design procedure, this paper uses a mathematical model and physical geometry. Vehicle model consists of dimensions, inertias and mechanical constants. These vehicle model parameters divided into several categories : basic parameters, coefficients and constants, design specification, spring and damper, bush stiffness, stabilizer bar, suspension geometry, tire, and vehicle weights of various design condition. This paper uses a vehicle design fundamental (VDF) program running under Windows 95 graphical interface. The features of VDF will be briefly outlined in this paper.
