Application of Birefringence CAE in Mould Design of Optic Lens Injection Molding Process (광학렌즈 사출성형금형 설계에 있어서 CAE기술의 활용)

  • This study is focused on simulation technology in injection molding process for plastic optic lenses. The CAE program, $3D-TIMON^{TM}$ is used for the injection molding simulation with O-PET resin material. The design for different gate shape and runner layout has been under review by CAE simulation results. Moreover, the prediction of birefringence and polarized light in injection molded optic lenses has been tested by the CAE Program. The simulation results have been expected to effectively use in the design of injection molding mould.

  • Injection mold is a manufacturing process used to produce the various parts of complicated shape at a low cost. Many factors such as, section shape, resin and mold temperature, filling time, etc, affect on the quality of injection part during injection molding process. The precent study, was carried out the shrinkage analysis of shoes injection mold to optimize runner shape based on filling and packing pressure with MoldFlow. Taguchi design and analysis of variance are used to optimize injection mold design.

A Study on the Effects of Flow Adaptive Gating System and Ceramic Filter on Flow Stability (흐름 적응 탕구계와 필터가 유동 안정성에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • Casting defects produced during the casting process seriously affect the mechanical properties of the resulting products, reduce the performance capabilities of the product, and also result in economic losses. Therefore, this paper mainly investigates the causes of defects and methods by which to reduce these defects stemming from molten metal flows in a runner system of the type widely used in the sand mold casting process. The flow characteristics of a molten alloy are difficult to observe during the actual casting process. For this reason, a water model was used to observe the flow in the casting process, and the flow in each case was recorded using high-speed cameras as part of the experimental process of this study. Several repetitive experiments were performed to improve the accuracy of the experimental results. The traditional casting system was modified according to the design rules proposed by Campbell, and the system was termed flow-adaptive gating system with a water model. Comparing the flow characteristics of traditional and adaptive gating systems with a water model shows that the bubbles in the water in the latter case are reduced more significantly than in the former case. A ceramic filter system was adapted to the flow-adaptive gating system to minimize the instability of the flow during filling, which occurs as the fluid velocity in the runner increases. In additional, the flow behavior with and without the filter system were compared. The water model system in this work was shown to be able to verify that the adaptation of the filter system brings improvements by stabilizing the flow and reducing the amount of bubbles in the runner system. Moreover, using the flow-adaptive runner system with the filter system leads to considerably stable flows in the runner system.

THE EFFECT OF SPRUE DESIGN ON THE MARGINAL REPRODUCIBILITY OF CAST TITANIUM CROWNS (주입선 형태가 티타늄 주조관의 변연재현성에 미치는 영향)

  • There has been a great interest in the use of titanium for fixed and removable prostheses in recent because of its excellent biocompatibility. However the high melting temperature and chemical reactivity of titanium necessitates casting systems different from those used in conventional casting. The current titanium casting systems are based on an electric-arc design for melting the metal in an argon atmosphere and its exclusive investment. Despite the new developments in Ti casting systems, inadequate mold filling and internal porosity are frequently observed casting defects. Therefore, the study on the fabrication technique including sprue design to solve these casting defects is still necessary. In this study to evaluate the effect of sprue design on the castability of simulated cast titanium crowns, 10 cylindrical cast crowns for each group with four different sprue design(Single group. Double group, Runner bar group. Reservoir group) were fabricated. An impression of the entire casting margin was made and cut at $90^{\circ}$ intervals, and the sections were photographed in a microscope at $100{\times}$ magnification to record marginal discrepancy. The internal porosities of the cast crowns were disclosed by radiographs. Within the limits of this study. the following conclusions were drawn. 1. The overall mean marginal discrepancies for each group were as follows: Double group, $43.65{\mu}m$; Reservoir group, $50.27{\mu}m$; Single group, $54.17{\mu}m$; Runner bar group, $58.90{\mu}m$ (p<0.05). 2. The mean of marginal discrepancies for wax patterns was $10.65{\mu}m$. 3 The numbers of internal porosity showed the most in Runner bar group followed by Single group, Reservoir group, and Double group.

Development of a Submerged Propeller Turbine for Micro Hydro Power

  • This paper aims to develop a submerged propeller turbine for micro hydropower plant which allows to sustain high values of efficiency in a broad range of hydrological conditions (H=2~6 m, $Q=0.15{\sim}0.39m^3/s$). The two aspects to be considered in this development are mechanical simplicity and high-efficiency operation. Unlike conventional turbines that have spiral casing and gear box, this is directing driving and no spiral casing. A 10 kW class turbine which has the most high potential of the power generation has been developed. The most important element in the design of turbine is the runner blade. The initial blade is designed using inverse design method and then the runner geometry is modified by classical hydraulic method. The design process is carried out in two steps. First, the blade shape is fix and then other components of submerged propeller turbine are designed. Computational fluid dynamics analyses based on the Navier-Stokes equations have been used to obtain overall performance data for the blade and the full turbine, respectively. The results generated by performance parameters(head, guide vane opening angle and rotational speed) variations are theoretically analysed. The evaluation criteria for the blade and the turbine performances are the pressure distribution and flow's behavior on the runner blades and turbine. The results of simulation reveals an efficiency of 91.5% and power generation of 10.5kW at the best efficiency point at the head of 4m and a discharge of $0.3m^3/s$.

Effect of the Sprue Design on the Fitness of Implant Prosthesis (주입선의 설계가 임플란트 보철물의 적합도에 미치는 영향)

  • Statement of problem: Conventional techniques for implant framework fabrication produce significant error that is inconsistent with passive-fit requirement for osseointegrated implants. One of the etiologic factors which cause the errors is a sprue which may deform the framework during solidification and contraction. Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate objectively effect of the sprue design on the accuracy of fit of implant prosthesis. Materials and method: Three different designs were considered relative to effect of casting accuracy. The first design had straight sprues and a button of excess alloy at the non-casting end of the sprues. The second was runner bar design(with the button). The last was straight sprues design(without the button). Gold cylinder and laboratory analogue had been used to diminish variables affecting to casting accuracy. Gold alloy and pressure-vacuum casting machine had been used. Marginal gap had been measured by SEM. One-way ANOVA and Duncan test had been used for statistical analysis. Results: The first design showed $79.87{\pm}13.95{\mu}m$ marginal gap. The second and third were $40.17{\pm}15.8{\mu}m$ and $35.17{\pm}9.95{\mu}m$ respectively. Conclusion: Straight sprues without button and runner bar designs were more accurate than straight sprues with button design(P<.05).

  • Semi-Solid Diecasters usually carry out the Semi-Solid diecasting experiments before producing new casts. At the Semi-Solid diecasting stages, the runner-gate part has been always repeatedly corrected, which leads to a tedious processing time and increased processing cost. A large amount of experience is essential in manual assessment and if the design is defective, much time and a great deal of efforts will be wasted in the modification of the die. In this study, design system has been developed based on design database. In addition, gate experiment for gating system design has been carried out to append the database. It is possible for engineers to make efficient gating system design of Semi-Solid diecasting and it will result in the reduction of expenses and time to be required. The detailed contents of the research are described in the followings.

  • In the manufacture and processing of large plastic materials, product quality is tested and verified through several techniques such as injection processing, residual stress through injection molding and shrinkage. With regards to the injection molding process, common problems such as inconsistent density is seen when different points of the product are discovered to have varying thickness levels. Sink marks in product are then evident. This occurs when there is poor molding conditions caused about by poor runner and packaging systems incorporated into the process. We designed the runner system which is possible balanced filling to cavities using CAE program $Moldflow^{TM}$ and then obtained optimal processing conditions by Taguchi's Robust Design technique.
