  • Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) are measured with HFC32/HFC152a mixture at several compositions. All data are taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$, on a horizontal plain square surface of $9.53{\times}9.53$ mm, with heat fluxes of 10 $kW/m^2$ to 100 $kW/m^2$ with an interval of 10 $kW/m^2$, in the increasing order of heat flux. Test results show that the HTCs of these mixtures are up to 45% lower than those of the ideal HTCs calculated by a linear mixing rule with pure fluids' HTCs, due to the mass transfer resistance associated with non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures. Pool boiling data show the deduction in HTCs with an increase in GTD of the mixture. The present mixture data agree well with five well known correlations, within 20% deviation.

  • In this study, to reduce the flood damage caused by flood discharge exceeding project flood, the primary technology was applied to determining the optimal location and size for underground sluiceway. The Jungrang Stream was selected for this study because the stream was overflowed and the embankment section of the stream was destroyed owing to localized torrential rainfall in 1998 and 2001. Considering 200-year frequency storm, the inlets of the underground discharge channel were located at Seoul City limits, the confluence of Danghyun Stream, Wolgye 1-gyo, and the confluence of Mukdong Stream. The outlets were located at the estuary of Jungrang Stream and rightbank of Banpo Bridge in Han River. The transverse discharge according to the variation of overflow depth at the inlet of underground discharge channel was estimated and the effect of inundation reduction was analyzed. To examine the appropriate scale of the underground discharge channel, the 8 operation methods for the management of outlet discharge were compared considering four rules (only storage, the constant discharge rate, the constant discharge volume, and the mixture of the constant discharge rate and discharge volume). As a result, the effect of inundation reduction was most significantly improved when the inlet was located at the confluence of Danghyun Stream. The appropriate size of underground sluiceway for 200-year frequency storm was studied, and as a result, the appropriate diameters of the underground discharge channel were 12 m in case of only storage(Rule D), 9m in 50% of discharge(Rule E), 8 m in constant discharge volume(Rule F), and 7 m in mixture method(Rule G). This investigation process can be applied to design the underground discharge channel when the inundation damage is significant in coastal area due to embankment overflow. The underground discharge channel in Jungrang Stream can also be used as an underground road to link Seoul City to Uijeongbu City during dry season.

  • This paper, presents the dynamic and stability analysis of the simply supported single walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNT) reinforced concrete beam on elastic-foundation using an integral first-order shear deformation beam theory. The condition of the zero shear-stress on the free surfaces of the beam is ensured by the introduction of the shear correction factors. The SWCNT reinforcement is considered to be uniform and variable according to the X, O and V forms through the thickness of the concrete beam. The effective properties of the reinforced concrete beam are calculated by employing the rule of mixture. The analytical solutions of the buckling and free vibrational behaviors are derived via Hamilton's principle and Navier method. The analytical results of the critical buckling loads and frequency parameters of the SWCNT-RC beam are presented in the form of explicit tables and graphs. Also the diverse parameters influencing the dynamic and stability behaviors of the reinforced concrete beam are discussed in detail.

  • This paper deals with free vibration of FG sandwich annular sector plates on Pasternak elastic foundation with different boundary conditions, based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The plates with simply supported radial edges and arbitrary boundary conditions on their circular edges are considered. The influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness, aspect ratio, internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite sandwich plates is investigated in this research work. The distributions of CNTs are considered functionally graded (FG) or uniform along the thickness of upper and bottom layers of the sandwich sectorial plates and their mechanical properties are estimated by an extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. The core of structure is porous and the internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) are distributed in the matrix of core either uniformly or non-uniformly according to three different patterns. The elastic properties of the nanocomposite are obtained by employing Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model. A semi-analytic approach composed of 2D-Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (2D-GDQM) and series solution is adopted to solve the equations of motion. The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples. Some new results for the natural frequencies of the plate are prepared, which include the effects of elastic coefficients of foundation, boundary conditions, material and geometrical parameters. The new results can be used as benchmark solutions for future researches.

  • TiC-21 mol% Mo solid solution (${\delta}$-phase) and TiC-99 mol% Mo solid solution (${\beta}$-phase), and TiC-(80~90) mol% Mo hypo-eutectic composite were deformed by compression in a temperature range from room to 2300 K and in a strain rate range from $4.9{\times}10^{-5}$ to $6.9{\times}10^{-3}/s$. The deformation behaviors of the composites were analyzed from the strengths of the ${\delta}$- and ${\beta}$-phases. It was found that the high strength of the eutectic composite is due primarily to solution hardening of TiC by Mo, and that the ${\delta}$-phase undergoes an appreciable plastic deformation at and above 1420 K even at 0.2% plastic strain of the composite. The yield strength of the three kinds of phase up to 1420 K is quantitatively explained by the rule of mixture, where internal stresses introduced by plastic deformation are taken into account. Above 1420 K, however, the calculated yield strength was considerably larger than the measured strength. The yield stress of ${\beta}$-phase was much larger than that of pure TiC. A good linear relationship was held between the yield stress and the plastic strain rate in a double-logarithmic plot. The deformation behavior in ${\delta}$-phase was different among the three temperature ranges tested, i.e., low, intermediate and high. At an intermediate temperature, no yield drop occurred, and from the beginning the work hardening level was high. At the tested temperature, a good linear relationship was held in the double logarithmic plot of the yield stress against the plastic strain rate. The strain rate dependence of the yield stress was very weak up to 1273 K in the hypo-eutectic composite, but it became stronger as the temperature rose.

  • Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to accurately evaluate the in-plane mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs). The FMLs in the current study are comprised of a layer of self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) sandwiched between two layers of aluminum alloy 5052-H34. The nonlinear tensile behavior of the FMLs under in-plane loading conditions was investigated using both numerical simulations and a theoretical analysis. The numerical simulation was based on finite element modeling using the ABAQUS/Explicit code and the theoretical constitutive model was based on the volume fraction approach using the rule of mixture and a modification of the classical lamination theory, which incorporates the elastic-plastic behavior of the aluminum alloy and the SRPP. The simulations and the model are used to predict the inplane mechanical properties such as stress-strain response and deformation behavior of the FMLs. In addition, a post-stretching process is used to reduce the thermal residual stresses before uniaxial tensile testing of the FMLs. Through comparison of both the numerical simulations and the theoretical analysis with the experimental results, it is concluded that the numerical simulation model and the theoretical approach can describe with sufficient accuracy the actual tensile stress-strain behavior of the FMLs.

  • The effects of guar gum (GG) and xanthan gum (XG) at different concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% w/w) on the rheological properties of Korean waxy rice starch (WRS) pastes were evaluated under both steady and dynamic shear conditions. The flow properties of WRS-gum mixtures were determined from the rheological parameters of the power law model. The addition of GG and XG to WRS resulted in an increase in the apparent viscosity ($\eta_{a,100}$) and consistency index (K) values obtained from power law model. The flow behavior index (n) values of the WRS-XG mixtures decreased with an increase in gum concentration while there was only a marginal difference between n values for the WRS-GG mixtures. Dynamic moduli (G', G", and $\eta^*$) values in the WRS-gum mixture systems also increased with an increase in gum concentration. WRS-XG mixtures had higher dynamic moduli and lower tan $\delta$ (ratio of G"/G') values than WRS-GG mixtures, indicating that the higher dynamic rheological properties of WRS-XG can be attributed to an increase in the viscoelasticity of the continuous phase in the starch-gum mixture systems, which was due to the higher viscoleastic properties of XG compared to GG. The dynamic ($\eta^*$) and steady shear ($\eta_a$) viscosities of the WRS-XG paste at a 0.2% gum concentration followed the Cox-Merz superposition rule.

  • Poly(p-hydroxybenzoate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) 8/2 thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyester, poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN), and PET ternary blend was spun to fiber by melt spinninB process, and tensile properties of the fibers were measured. The matrix of the fibers, PET and PEN, were dissolved in ο-chlorophenol at 55$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, and the liquid crystalline polymer fibrils were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Halpin-Tsai equation for modulus calculation of short fiber reinforced composite and the rule of mixture for continuous reinforcement composite were modified, and the tensile modulus were calculated and compared with experimental modulus. To minimize difference between the theoretical and the experimental moduli, dimensionless viscosity constant (K) was given and used to modify two equations. The theoretical tensile modulus using the newly modified equations presentel a similar to the experimental tensile modulus of composite, and the modified equations presented a unique way to determine the tensile modulus of the liquid crystalline polymer reinforced thermoplastic composites.

  • Granulated coal ash (GCA), a mixture of the by-product from milling processes with a small amount of cement added, has recently come to be used as a new form of geomaterial. The shear strength and deformation behaviours of GCA are greatly determined by its relative density or void ratio. A series of drained triaxial compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens of GCA at confining pressures of between 50 kPa and 400 kPa at initial relative densities of 50%, 70% and 80%. Experimental results show that a rise in relative density increases the peak shear strength and intensifies the dilation behaviour. The initial tangent modulus and secant modulus of the stress-strain curve increase with increasing initial relative density, whereas the axial and volumetric strains at failure decrease with level of initial relative density. The stress-dilatancy relationships of GCA at different relative densities and confining pressures display similar tendency. The dilatancy behaviour of GCA is modelled by the Nova rule and the material property N in Nova rule of GCA is much larger than that of natural sand.

  • For the inert gases of Ar, $N_2$and $CO_2$, the empirical equations of the gas mixture were correlated in terms of saturated pressure, density and viscosity. They were obtained by regression analysis based on the mixing rule. The empirical equation of saturated pressure was assumed as the first order function of temperature. The empirical form of density was expressed as compressibility factor and saturated pressure while the empirical equation of viscosity was formulated as a power function of temperature. This empirical equations of the physical properties were obtained in the composition of Ar, $N_2$and $CO_2$, 40/50/10(mol. %).
