  • In order to control the missiles by aerodynamics, control surfaces sometime called fins are used. Deflection angles of these fins are the right control variables of the aerodynamics, but aerodynamicists prefer to use analytic variables called aileron, elevator and rudder instead of these physical variables, because these three analytic variables dominantly influence on the roll, pitch and yaw channels of the missile maneuver, respectively, and each can be assumed a linear combination of four fin deflection angles. On that basis, roll, pitch and yaw autopilots for controlling the attitudes or lateral acceleration of the missile are designed, and as a consequence outputs of each autopilot are aileron, elevator and rudder commands, respectively. In the existing fin control scheme for the typical tail-fin controlled cruciform missiles, firstly these outputs are distributed to four fin defection commands, and after that four fins are actuated by fin controllers so that their deflections follow the commands. This paper shows that performance of such control schemes can be degraded significantly when fin actuators have certain physical constraints such as slew rate, voltage or current limit, uncertainty of actuator dynamics, and so on, and propose a new control scheme which alleviates such problems. This scheme can be widely applied to various fin actuation systems. But in this paper, for convenience, tail-fin controlled cruciform missile is taken as an example, and it is shown that a proposed control scheme gives better performance than the existing one.

  • An integrated guidance scheme for guided weapon system is described in this paper. Against conventional guidance methods, this method combines an autopilot and a guidance law. The controller is designed using LQ regulator whose performance index is different from other optimal guidance laws. Since dynamics of the system is considered in the derivation, the controller performance is improved. By simulation, the suggested method shows better performance in minimum distance sense than conventional guidance schemes such as Bang Bang guidance or Pursuit Guidance. Since the suggested method provides smooth rudder deflection in contrast to the conventional method, the load on a energy source of the system can be greatly lessened.

  • Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and NRC's Institute for Ocean Technology (IOT) collaborated on a project to predict the performance of a new design for a Suezmax size tanker that had acceptable open water performance but was also capable of operating in ice. The resulting hull form was a single screw, single rudder design with a bulbous bow, modified for operation in ice. An important design consideration is the ability of the ship to maneuver in different ice conditions. This paper presents the results of maneuvering experiments in pack ice and level ice, using a free running model.

  • In this paper, a 3m-class free running model ship will be introduced with its manoeuvring performance experiments. The results of turning circle test and zig-zag test will be explained. The developed system are equipped with GPS, main control computer, wireless LAN, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), self-propulsion propeller and driving rudder. Its motion can be controlled by RC (Radio Control) and wireless LAN from land based center. Automatic navigation is also available by pre-programmed algorithm. The trajectory of navigation can be acquired by GPS and it provides us with important data for ship's motion control experiments. The results of manoeuvring performance experiment have shown that the developed free running model ship can be used to verify the test of turning circle and zig-zag. For next step, other experimental researches such as ship collision avoidance system and automatic berthing can be considered in the future.

  • In this study, a motion control problem for the vessels towed by tugboats or towing ships on the sea is considered. The towed vessels, such as barge ships, are used for several purposes. Generally, these vessels have no power propulsion system and are towed using ropes and towing vessel (tugboats). The basic mathematical model of the towed vessel in which three active rudders are attached was introduced from a previous study. Owing to the dependency of the motions of the towed vessel to the towing ship, a method is suggested to cope with the undesirable disturbance and improve the tracking performance. For the simulation study, a model of the towed vessel with a towing ship is made, and necessary physical parameters are identified from the experiment. For the defined and linearized model, a control system is designed, and the control performance is also evaluated. A simulation study is conducted and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified.

  • Water jet propulsion system has high efficiency on middle to high speed, and it provides better safety than conventional screw propeller because it has not projected propeller and rudder. So many leisure boat and high-speed ferries use this propulsion system. We developed water-jet propulsion unit for small planning boat, and launched that in the boat, after that we tested water-jet unit in the lake. As a result, we certify heat dissipation at the bearing housing and reverse duct's shape for neutral position are important at the design, and alignment water-jet unit and keel line are important at the launching, and ship's resistance performance and jet's propulsion performance also are needed to consideration.

  • This paper presents a practical method to predict the characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions. A attempt is made to calculate the manoeuvring motions utilizing principal particulars of ship hull, properller and rudder as basic input data. The mathematical models, which describe the ship manoeuvring motions, are developed on the basis of MMG(5), Inoue(17), Hooft(18) and so on. Calcuations of manoeuvring motions for three kinds of typical characteristics, namely turning motion, zig-zag manoeuvre response and steady turning performance, are carried out. In order to examine the validity of the calculation method of this paper, simulations are run for seven merchant ships employed by Inoue(4). The computed results by present method are compared with full scale trials and Inoue's calculations(4). It can be concluded that the calculation method proposed in this paper is useful and pwoerful for prediction of characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions at the initial design phase or the application study on manoeuvring motions.

  • In Early vessels did not provide an exact equation for preventig the capsizing vessels. On land, many vehicle rollover prevention technologies using the steady-state Conrning Equations were developed, which showed better performance than the exiting method at sea. For better performance, It is proposed to improve safety mangement when turning vessel using the Ackerman geometic model-based Cornering Equations in this paper.

  • In recent trends of the enlargement and specialization, container ship, LNCG, PCC and passenger ship which have relatively large hull and superstructure above the water line, are already being operated in the world It is very important information for the safety operation of these vessels to estimate the ship's performance under the specific wind condition while berthing, unberthing or low-speed sailing. In this paper, the effect of wind force and moment acting on the training ship HANNARA is investigated by using the numerical calculations. The results of drift angle and counter rudder angle with the relative wind direction and force, the critical wind velocity with the ratio of wind velocity and ship's speed and maximum heeling angle with the wind velocity are shown The presented results can be applied directly to T/S HANNARA in berthing maneuver and avoiding typhoons, and utilized as an educational materials.

  • The full nonlinear equations of an unmanned aerial vehicle ground taxiing mathematical dynamic model are built based on a type of unmanned aerial vehicle data in LMS Virtual.Lab Motion. The flexible landing gear model is considered to make the aircraft ground motion more accurate. The electric braking control system is established in MATLAB/Simulink and the experiment of it verifies that the electric braking model with the pressure sensor is fitted well with the actual braking mechanism and it ensures the braking response speediness. The direction rectification control law combining the differential brake and the rudder with 30% anti-skid brake is built to improve the directional stability. Two other rectifying control laws are demonstrated to compare with the designed control law to verify that the designed control is of high directional stability and high braking efficiency. The lateral displacement increases by 445.45% with poor rectification performance under the only rudder rectifying control relative to the designed control law. The braking distance rises by 36m and the braking frequency increases by 85.71% under the control law without anti-skid brake. Different landing conditions are simulated to verify the good robustness of the designed rectifying control.
