The hop count routing metric is widely used in routing protocols of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) due to its simplicity and effectiveness. With a lower hop count route, fewer transmissions are required to send a packet from the source to the destination. This can improve the throughput of a network because fewer transmissions results in less channel contention and interference. Despite this, the hop count routing metric may not be ideal for mobile scenarios where the topology of a network changes constantly and rapidly. In this paper, we propose to increase route stability in mobile WSNs by discovering paths that are more stable during route discoveries using routing metrics. Two routing metrics were proposed, the true beauty of these routing metrics lies in the fact that they can even be used even without specialized hardware such as GPS and other sensors. We implemented the proposed routing metrics in the AODV routing protocol and found that they are highly effective and outperform other stability-based routing metrics and the hop count routing metric.

This paper is intended to study how well the routing protocol supplied in wireless mesh networks can evade interference path along the applied routing metric. Wireless mesh networks, unlike existing network techniques, has the characteristics that node movement is less and energy effect is limited. Therefore. this type of network requires path configuring technique to reflect such network characteristics and new routing metric to determine proper path. Routing metric proposed recently is designed to produce link quality accurately, but it configures path not considering the traffic situation of adjacent nodes. Thus. this technique has the problems of reduced transfer rate and delay between terminals occurring due to frequent traffic chaos by the interference of adjacent nodes. Therefore, this paper proposes metric that configures routing path by finding like metric that can transfer data effectively by considering the traffic situation of adjacent nodes. We confirmed through simulation that the proposed routing metric reduces the delay between terminals via the path that evades the traffic interference of adjacent node.

This paper investigates how many optimal routes can be established in terms of a given wireless mesh routing metric. Although many of routing metrics have been devised to precisely derive the wireless link quality in mesh, most (if not all) metrics have not been evaluated their optimality along with routing protocols. We consider stateof-the-art routing metrics and a widely accepted routing protocol in order to observe the optimality of established routes varying the number of source nodes. Also, we propose a unidirectional routing to deal with possible link asymmetry feature in wireless links. Through comparative simulation evaluations, we show that the portion of optimally established routes becomes less as the network traffic load increases, regardless of employed metrics, network topologies, and routing protocols.

Wireless mesh networks, unlike Ad-hoc network, has low mobility and multi-path communication between terminals and other networks because it has the backbone structures. Most studies are advanced on finding the optimal routing path in multi-hop wireless mesh network environment. Various routing metric, minimum number of hops(Hop_count) and ETX, ETT metric, are proposed to wireless mesh networks. However, most metrics cannot identify the high throughput routing paths because this metric uses a different measurement parameters in each direction. So actual delivery rate does not provide to this metric. This paper describes the metric and implementation of IETC as a metric. This paper shows the improvement in performance.
This paper presents the design of a routing metric for energy-efficient and low-delay path selection and a new routing protocol utilizing the metric in duty-cycyled wireless sensor networks. The new routing metric based on duty cycle, EDW, can reduce the energy and delay of transmission paths, which represents total waiting time from source to destination due to duty cycle. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new multipath routing protocol based on cross-layer information utilizing the new routing metric, and simulation results show that the proposed protocol shows better performance of end-to-end delay and energy consumption.

Tactical network environments are characterized by unreliable connectivity, communication links which has limited bandwidth compared to commercial networks and distributed architecture where users have high mobility. The best route should be selected based on the required traffic characteristics which can be a wireless channel environments and a status of nodes which are moving. Those characteristics are self aware and should be a routing decision factor in order to guarantee a reliable data transfer. In this paper we define the requirements of services and traffic characteristics on tactical network environments and suggest the new routing method "AODV-IMTC" based on selective routing metric to enable efficient data transfer in wireless ad hoc networks.

Many routing algorithms, proposed for ad-hoc wireless networks, we based on source routing scheme and shortest path route has short lifetime especially in highly dense ad-hoc wireless networks. So some routing protocols such as SSA and ABR are considering the link stability and try finding more stable route. In this paper we propose a new routing algorithm considering utilization metric based on SSA routing algerian in Ad-Hoc networks. To reduce the bottleneck by specific metric of SSA, proposed scheme makes load balancing in networks by distributing the connections to several routes. For the evaluation of the performance we compare our scheme with existent routing protocol AODV and SSA. And the results, obtained using the ns-2 network simulation platform, show good performance that reduced the number of reconstructions remarkably by distributing the whole traffic to several routes when there are several stable routes.

Wireless mesh networks are considered a promising solution to last mile broadband. The unique characteristics of WMN impose unique requirements on designing routing protocols and metrics for WMN. However, existing routing schemes that are designed for single-channel multi-hop wireless networks may lead to inefficient routing paths in multichannel. This paper focuses on the routing problem for multi-radio multichannel WMNs. We list the challenges in designing routing algorithms for multi-radio multichannel WMNs. Then we examine the requirements and considerations for designing routing metrics according to the characteristics of multi-radio multichannel WMNs. Finally we survey and investigate the existing routing metrics in terms of their ability to satisfy these requirements.
The routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL) is an internet protocol based routing protocol developed and standardized by IETF in 2012 to support a wide range of applications for low-power and lossy-networks (LLNs). In LLNs consisting of resource-constrained devices, the energy consumption of battery powered sensing devices during network operations can greatly impact network lifetime. In the case of inefficient route selection, the energy depletion from even a few nodes in the network can damage network integrity and reliability by creating holes in the network. In this paper, a composite energy-aware node metric ($RER_{BDI}$) is proposed for RPL; this metric uses both the residual energy ratio (RER) of the nodes and their battery discharge index. This composite metric helps avoid overburdening power depleted network nodes during packet routing from the source towards the destination oriented directed acyclic graph root node. Additionally, an objective function is defined for RPL, which combines the node metric $RER_{BDI}$ and the expected transmission count (ETX) link quality metric; this helps to improve the overall network packet delivery ratio. The COOJA simulator is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The simulations show encouraging results for the proposed scheme in terms of network lifetime, packet delivery ratio and energy consumption, when compared to the most popular schemes for RPL like ETX, hop-count and RER.

In this paper, we study a novel routing algorithm based on load balancing for multi-channel wireless mesh networks. In order to increase the network capacity and reduce the interference of transmission streams and the communication delay, on the basis of weighted cumulative expected transmission time (WCETT) routing metric this paper proposes an improved routing metric based on load balancing and channel interference (LBI_WCETT), which considers the channel interference, channel diversity, link load and the latency brought by channel switching. Meanwhile, in order to utilize the multi-channel strategy efficiently in wireless mesh networks, a new channel allocation algorithm is proposed. This channel allocation algorithm utilizes the conflict graph model and considers the initial link load estimation and the potential interference of the link to assign a channel for each link in the wireless mesh network. It also utilizes the channel utilization percentage of the virtual link in its interference range as the channel selection standard. Simulation results show that the LBI_WCETT routing metric can help increase the network capacity effectively, reduce the average end to end delay, and improve the network performance.
