  • Terrain referenced navigation(TRN) system is an attractive method for obtaining position based on terrain measurements and a terrain map. We focus on TRN systems based on the point mass filter(PMF) which is one of the recursive Bayesian method. In this paper, we propose two kinds of performance index for Bayesian filter. The proposed indices are based on entropy and mutual information from information theory. The first index measures roughness of terrain based on entropy of likelihood. The second index named by information gain, which is the mutual information between priori and posteriori distribution, is a quantity of information gained by updating measurement at each step. The proposed two indices are used to determine whether the solution from TRN is adequate for TRN/INS integration or not, and this scheme gives the performance improvement. Simulation result shows that the proposed indices are meaningful and the proposed algorithm performs better than normal TRN algorithm.

  • Recently, the development and application of unmaned robots are increasing in various fields including surveillance and reconnaissance, planet exploration and disaster relief. Unmaned robots are usually controlled from distance using radio communications but they should be equipped with autonomous travelling function to cope with unexpected terrains and obstacles. This means that unmanned robots should be able to evaluate terrain's characteristics quantitatively using mounted sensors so as to traverse harsh natural terrains autonomously. For this purpose, this paper presents an algorithm for extracting terrain information from elevation maps as an early step of traversability analysis. Slope and roughness information are extracted from a world terrain map based on least squares method and fractal theory, respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified on both fractal and real terrain maps.

  • The MERRA reanalysis data provided online by NASA was applied to predict the monthly energy productions of Donghai Bridge Offshore wind farms in China. WindPRO and WindSim that are commercial software for wind farm design and energy prediction were used. For topography and roughness map, the contour line data from SRTM combined with roughness information were made and used. Predictions were made for 11 months from July, 2010 to May, 2011, and the results were compared with the actual electricity energy production presented in the CDM(Clean Development Mechanism)monitoring report of the wind farm. The results from the prediction programs were close to the actual electricity energy productions and the errors were within 4%.

  • Planting pine trees on the coastal dunes has been carried out along the East coast as well as West coast of South Korea. Although the artificial forestation has been regarded as a good policy that help to protect the coastal area from natural disasters, but its real effect to the landscapes is still unknown. In this study, we have installed a monitoring site with an automated weather station to study requirements for dune formation and its environmental changes in Osan beach, Yangyang-Gun, Gangwon Province. We analyzed the meteorological data collected from 2010 to 2019 and vegetational changes in the study area. As a result, the wind speed is decreased by around 30% and the pine-covered area is increased by around 300m2 after planting Japanese Black Pine in 2015. At present, it seems that the eolian transport of sand particle is minimal, because the dominant winds are the westerly winds which is not landward but seaward, and because the surface roughness length is about 0.5m which is similar to that in the deciduous forest.

  • Recently management of vegetation distributed in the watercourse is very important not only for safety but also for river restoration. In general, vegetations in the watercourse increase hydraulic resistance and accordingly decrease conveyance capacity which may yield levee overflow. This paper simulates water level rise using 1D and 2D hydro dynamic model to check the possibility of overflow in downstream of the Soyang Reservoir by assigning different roughness coefficient corresponding to different types of vegetation. In this study, 3 different vegetation types of tree, shrub, and main channel were considered and corresponding Manning's roughness coefficient n was assigned based on the vegetation map generated from the site investigation. As results, the water level raised about 0.1 to 0.7 m comparing with the case without considering vegetation and a proper measurements is necessary where overflow occurs due to low level levee.

  • ELID(ELectrolytic In-process Dressing) grinding is an excellent technique for mirror grinding of various advanced metallic or nonmetallic materials. A polishing process is also required for elimination of scratches present on ELID grinded surfaces. MAP(Magnetic Assisted Polishing) has been used as a polishing method due to its high polishing efficiency and to its resulting in a superior surface quality. This study describes an effective fabrication method combining ELID and MAP of nano-precision mirror grinding for glass-lens molding mould, such as WC-Co, which are extensively used in precision tooling material. And for the optics glass-ceramic named Zerodure, which is extensively used in precision optics components too. The experimental results show that the combined method is very effective in reducing the time required for final polishing. The best surface roughness of the polished glass-ceramic was within 1.7nm Ra in this study.

  • We present a single shot low coherence white light Hilbert phase microscopy (WL-HPM) for quantitative phase imaging of Si optoelectronic devices, i.e., Si integrated circuits (Si-ICs) and Si solar cells. White light interferograms were recorded by a color CCD camera and the interferogram is decomposed into the three colors red, green and blue. Spatial carrier frequency of the WL interferogram was increased sufficiently by means of introducing a tilt in the interferometer. Hilbert transform fringe analysis was used to reconstruct the phase map for red, green and blue colors from the single interferogram. 3D step height map of Si-ICs and Si solar cells was reconstructed at multiple wavelengths from a single interferogram. Experimental results were compared with Atomic Force Microscopy and they were found to be close to each other. The present technique is non-contact, full-field and fast for the determination of surface roughness variation and morphological features of the objects at multiple wavelengths.

  • To study the influence of the shape of contacting bodies (especially the end profile) on slip regime, wear test is conducted in the case of the contact between tube and support. Two different end profiles of the support are used such as truncated wedge and rounded punch. During the test, 10, 30 and 50 N are applied as normal force and slip displacement varies between 10-200 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The tube and the support specimens are made of Zircaloy-4 and a specially designed wear tester is used. Tests are carried out in air at room temperature. Wear on the tube is examined by measuring microscope. Partial and gross slip regimes are classified from the observed wear shape. Surface roughness tester is also used to measure the wear depth and contour, from which wear volume is evaluated. The transition from partial to gross slip is also investigated by investigating the considerable increase of wear volume. From the result, the boundary between the partial and the gross slip is newly determined in the conventional fretting map for the present specific contact configuration. Since the transition is related with the amount of energy dissipation from the contact surface so is wear, it is regarded that wear can be restrained by designing a proper shape of support.

  • In this paper, we propose an ultrasonic magnetic abrasive polishing (US-MAP) technique to effectively machine a high-strength material, and we prove the efficiency of hybrid finishing. We use Taguchi's experimental method to determine the influence of each parameter. Based on the results, US-MAP exhibited a higher polishing efficiency than traditional MAP, and a suitable frequency for hybrid finishing was 28 kHz. When investigating the effect of the parameters on the surface roughness, the ultrasonic amplitude had the greatest effect. However, when machining with $55-{\mu}m$ amplitude, the machining efficiency decreased as the magnetic flux density varied.

  • In this study, the influence of a change in land use on the local weather fields is investigated around the Lake Shihwa area using synthetic land cover data and a high-resolution mesoscale model - the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF). The default land cover data generally used in the WRF is based on the land use category of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which erroneously presents most land areas of the Korean Peninsula as savannas. To revise such a fault, a multi-temporal land cover data, provided by the Ministry of Environment of Korea, was employed to generate a land cover map of 2005 subject to the land use in Korea at that time. A new land cover map of 1989, before the construction of the Lake Shihwa, was made based on the 2005 map and the Landsat 4-5 TM satellite images of two years. Over the areas where the land use had been changed (e.g., from sea to wetlands, towns, etc.) due to the Lake Shihwa development project, the skin temperature decreased by up to $8^{\circ}C$ in the winter case while increased by as much as $14^{\circ}C$ in the summer case. Changes in the water vapor mixing ratio were mostly affected by advection and topography in both seasons, with considerable increase in the summer case due to continuous sea breeze. Local decrease in water vapor occurred over high land use change areas and/or over downstream of such areas where alteration in wind fields were induced by changes in skin temperature and surface roughness at the areas of land use changes. The albedo increased by about 0.1% in the regions where sea was converted into wetland. In the regions where urban areas were developed, such as Songdo New Town and Incheon International Airport, the albedo increased by up to 0.16%.
