  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed with a centrifuge rotor-bearing system for the raing speed of 100,000 rpm. The system is composed of a centrifuge rotor(or simply the rotor), flexible shaft, motor rotor and shaft, and two support rolling element bearings of the motor shaft. Design goals are to achieve wide separation margins of critical speeds and favorable unbalance responses of the rotor at the associated critical speeds. The latter requirements are especially important as the system crosses multiple numbers of critical speeds and as the system may not have enough separaton margins around the rating speed. As the system adopts an extra-flexible shaft, it is shown that the rotor has satisfactory small unbalance responses over higher criticals while having an unsatisfactory large one at the first critical. To supress this a bumper ring or guide bearing needs to be installed at a suitable location of the flexible shaft. It is also shown that even with the flexible shaft the dynamics of the motor must be incoporated into the full system model to accurately identify the fourth critical speed, which is close to the rating speed, and higher ones. The analysis is based on the finite element method.

  • The unbalance response analysis is one of the essential area in the forced vibration analysis of rotor-bearing systems. Local bearing parameters in ortor-bearing systems are the major sources which give rise to a difficulty in unbalance response computation due to the complicated dynamic properties such as rotational speed dependency and anisotropy. In the present paper, an exact condensation procedure is introduced to easily take into account bearing parameters in computation of unbalance responses for rotor bearing systems. The present method is illustrated through a numerical example and compared with the conventional method.

  • In this paper, a control algorithm which is synchronously excitating the bearing with whirl speed of rotor is employed to suppress the whirl instability and unbalance response of the rotor-bearing system. Also, the cavitation algorithm implementing the Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson boundary condition is adopted to predict cavitation regions in the fluid film more accurately than a conventional analysis with the Reynolds condition. The stabilities and unbalance responses of the rotor-bearing system are investigated for various control gains and phase differences between the bearing and journal motion. It is shown that the unbalance response of the system can be greatly improved by synchronous control of the bearing, and there is an optimum phase difference, which gives the minimum unbalance response of the system, for given operating condition. It is also found that the onset speed of the instability can be greatly increased by synchronous control of the bearing.

  • This paper describes a transfer matrix approach to analyze the dynamics of a high sped flexible rotor system supported at 2 positions by five ceramic bearings. The rotor system is modelled as lumped parameters in which many factors are considered not only lumped inertia or mass, bending moment, shear force but also gyroscopic effect and unbalance. The equation of motion is derived in the transfer matrix form, from which the eigenvalues equation is also derived. The transfer natural frequencies and modes. The eigenvalues, eigenmodes, campbell diagram, whirling critical speed, whirling modes, and the response of unbalance are calculated and discussed.

  • The vibration of rotor systems is caused by various factors, such as misalignment, unbalance, gear meshing, error of assembly, etc. Modal test and TDA/ODS analysis were done. The dynamic analysis of the armature was done with SAMCEF which is a commercial software for finite element and kinematic analysis. The transient response of the armature is calculated by the SAMCEF with the consideration of magnetic force and bearing stiffness, which are the essential elements for the design of high speed cutter. Main frequency of the vibration is due to the unbalance of the armature. The FEM analysis model considering unbalance and the high speed cutter have same vibration properties. The vibration sources of the high speed cutter is proved to be unbalance.

  • This paper presents dynamic characteristics in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) with rotor eccentricity and proposes the reduction method of rotor eccentricity effects by the different winding connections. These characteristics investigations are computed by 2D transient magnetic FEM analysis coupled with external circuits. The radial and unbalance magnetic force in the stator, which is the main exciting force of the vibration, is calculated using Maxwell stress method and compared with the performance characteristics according to the serial and parallel connections of windings. The influence of winding method counteracting unbalance forces on the rotor vibration behavior is estimated by the current waveforms of the paralleled paths under rotor eccentricity.

  • The dynamic response due to the unbalance and crack and the quasi-static response due to gravity are analytically derived based on the complex transfer matrix. The additional slope is expressed as function of the bending moment at crack position based on the fracture mechanics concept, and inversely the bending moment is expressed as function of the additional slope at the crack position. At each angle step during the shaft revolution, the additional slope and bending moment are calculated by an iterative method. The transient behavior is considered by introducing Fourier series expansion concept for the additional slope. Simulation is carried out for a simple rotor similar to those available in the literature and comparison of the basic crack behavior is shown. Using the additional slope, the cracked rotor behavior is explained with the crack depth increased: the magnitude of the additional slope increases and the closed crack duration during a revolution decreases as the crack depth increases. The direction of unbalance is also shown as a factor to affect the crack breathing. Whirl orbits are shown near the sub-critical speed ranges of the rotor.

  • A new method of protecting 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor aginst burning-out by unbalance operation is proposed. This paper studied various kinds of situations occurred by unbalance operating in 3-phase induction motor, and we provided the search coils in the slots of stator and rotor for the purpose of detecting electrical phenpmena during unbalance operation. Through experiments, we find that search coils in the slots of stator is effective method for protecting the induction motor from unbalance operating.
