Fatigue and Damage Tolerance Evaluation of Composite Helicopter Rotor Blades (복합재 헬리콥터 로터 블레이드의 피로 및 손상허용 평가 방안)

  • Fatigue evaluations for the rotor blades of commercial or military rotorcraft have been carried out using the safe life concept since 1950s. Particularly, in the case of a rotor blade made of a composite material, a highly reliable fatigue life could be predicted by evaluation the cumulative damage using combination of fatigue life curve and load spectrum. However, there is a limit in adequately evaluating the strength reducing phenomena caused by damages or defects generated during the manufacturing process or impact damage induced by operational usages, using only the safe life concept. In this study, the fatigue evaluation process based on the damage tolerance concept is described and illustrated by means of successful application to substantiate the retirement time of composite rotor blades.

  • This paper describes the conceptual design of medium size helicopter rotor system. Based on assumed design requirements, trade-off study for rotor configuration has been conducted in terms of rotor tip speed, disk loading, blade area, solidity, etc for estimated primary mission gross weight. For the main rotor, four-blade and five-blade rotors are studied with the conventional tail rotor. The performance analysis for baseline configuration is conducted using a helicopter performance analysis program. The analysis shows design results satisfy the design requirements.

  • A new rotor control scheme, the isotropic control of anisotropic rotor bearing system in complex state space, is proposed, which utilizes the concepts on the eigenstructure of the isotropic rotor system. Then the control scheme is applied to an active magnetic bearing system and the control performance is investigated in relation to control energy, transient response, and unbalance response. In particular, it is shown that the proposed method is efficient for control of unbalance response.

A study on the nonlinear normal modes of rotors (회전체의 비선형 정규 모우드에 관한 연구)

  • In the present paper nonlinear normal modes of a rotor system is studied. The methodology to obtain the nonlinear normal modes is based on center manifold reduction technique. It also provides a way of nonlinear coordinate transform from the physical cordinates to the modal coordinates and an idea of individual nonlinear modal dynamics. In order to apply the present method to a rotor dynamics a single mass rotor system on nonlinear elastic supports is employed and the nonlinear normal modes of the system are obtained.

Noise and Vibration Characteristics of Externally Pressurized Air proceeding Bearings with a Circular Slot Restrictor (원형 슬롯 레스트릭터를 갖는 외부 가압 공기 저널 베어링의 소음 및 진동 특성)

  • The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the noise and vibration characteristics of externally pressurized air proceeding bearings with a circular slot restrictor. To do this, the nonlinear transient analysis including rotor imbalance was performed for a rotor-bearing system. The effects of radial clearance and the width of the bearing and mass eccentricity of the rotor on the noise and vibration characteristics of the bearing are also examined. The results show that the noise and vibration of the rotor-bearing system first increase up to critical speed of the system, and then decrease up to instability threshold speed of the system as the rotational speed of the rotor increases, and the noise of the bearing is markedly influenced by the mass eccentricity of the rotor and the radial clearance and the width of the bearing.

  • This study proposes a new simulation method of high speed rotor system with the dynamic model using multi body dynamic analysis tool and with a new phase modulating technique as a system control algorithm. A dynamic model of high speed rotor system was built by, ADAMS, commercial multi body dynamic program. The phase modulating technique is a new control algorithm for a rotor system. This algorithm can control system using an adaptive proportional gain and an adaptive phase which are obtained from periodical input signal. To make control system, a ADAMS model and component parameters and phase controller was composed by Matlab Simulink And simulate it.

Model Validation and Controller Design for Vibration Suppression of Flexible Rotor Using AMB

  • This paper discusses the model validation and vibration suppression of an AMB flexible rotor via additional LQG controller. The main difficulty in the vibration suppression of the flexible rotor using AMB is to realize a controller that can minimize resonance without injuring the stabilized rigid modes. In order to solve this problem, simple scheme for system modeling and controller design are developed. Firstly, the AMB flexible rotor is stabilized with a PID controller, which leads to a new stable rotor-bearing system. Then, authors propose the model validation procedure using measured open-loop frequency responses to obtain an accurate model of the AMB flexible rotor system. After that, LQG controller with modal weighting is designed to suppress resonances of the stable rotor-bearing system. Due to the poor controllability and observability of flexible modes compared to rigid ones, balancing of two Gramians is prerequisite for the fair LQG controller design. Simulation with step disturbance and experimental results of unbalance response up to 10,000 rpm verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Tail Rotor Design and Thrust Test for a Roll-balanced Agricultural Unmanned Helicopter (농용 무인헬리콥터의 가로균평을 위한 테일부 설계 및 추력 시험)

  • Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter would allow precise and timely spraying. The attitude of a helicopter depends on a number of dynamic variables for roll-balanced flight. Laterally tilting behavior of a helicopter is a physically intrinsic phenomenon while hovering and forwarding. In order to balance the fuselage, the rotor should be counter-tilted, resulting in the biased down-wash. The biased spraying toward right side causes uneven spray pattern. In this study, a raised tail rotor system for the roll-balanced helicopter was studied. Thrust of the tail rotor system was measured and theoretically estimated for the fundamental database of the roll-balanced helicopter design. The estimated tail thrust and roll-moment would be used to design the raising height of tail rotor and roll balancing dynamics. The unmanned agricultural helicopter required the tail rotor thrust of about 39.2 N (4.0 kgf) during hovering with a payload of 235.4 N (24 kgf). A raised tail rotor system would compensate for the physical tilt phenomena. A further attitude control system of helicopter would assist roll-balanced aerial spray application.

  • 본 논문은 전동형 모터의 Rotor의 자동 성형을 위한 자동화된 주조기 개발에 대한 결과이다. 개발된 자동화된 Rotor 전용 주조기는 수평형에 비해 금형의 크기가 약 1/2정도 이므로 금형 체결력이 반감되고, 기계 구조는 매우 작아진다. 그리고 Al용탕이 사출되는 과정에서 Spool -> Runner -> Gate -> Cavity(제품)에 이르기까지의 Runner를 최소화하여 재용융을 위한 에너지의 비용 절감을 할 수가 있다. 금형 구조가 간단하므로 금형비가 저렴하여 다품종 소량생산에 매우 유리하다. 개발제품은 수직형 구조로 알루미늄 용탕의 윗면의 공기가 금형의 유로 상측에 위치하므로 공기(gas)가 먼저 배출되어 사출(주조)후 Rotor 성형부에 남아 있는 기포가 최소화된다. 그러므로 충진도가 높아진다. Rotor 코아(규소강)가 크더라도 수직형은 금형내에 삽입(Inset)하기가 쉽고 또한, 제품의 착탈 부위와 사출부위가 다르기 때문에 작업성, 안전성이 우수하고 생산성이 매우 높다. 수직형은 충진 밀도가 매우 높고 밀도가 균일하기 때문 Rotor의 회전 소음, 진동에 대한 품질이 매우 우수하다. 따라서 고효율, 고품질의 전동모터 Rotor 제품 생산에 매우 효과적인 장비라 할 수 있다.
