Turbo-pumps have weak points, such as the pumping operation is unstable on the positive slope of the head curve and/or the cavitation occurs at the low suction head. To improve simultaneously both weak points, the first author invented the unique pumping unit composed of the tandem impellers and the peculiar motor with the double rotational armatures. The front and the rear impellers are driven by the inner and the outer armatures of the motor, respectively. Both impeller speeds are automatically and smartly adjusted in response to the pumping discharge, while the rotational torques between both impellers/armatures are counter-balanced. Such speeds contribute to suppress successfully not only the unstable operation at the low discharge but also the cavitation at the high discharge, as verified with the axial flow type pumping unit in the previous paper. Continuously, this paper investigates experimentally the effects of the tandem impeller profiles on the pump performances and the rotational speeds against the discharge, using the impellers whose loads are low and/or high at the normal discharge. The worthy remarks are that (a) the unstable operation is suppressed as expected and the shut off power is scarcely large in the smart control, (b) the blade profile contributes to determine the discharge giving the maximum/minimum rotational speed where the reverse flow may incipiently appears at the front impeller inlet, (c) the tandem impeller profiles scarcely affect the rotational speeds, while the loads of the front and the rear impellers are same, but (d) the impeller with the low load must run faster and the impeller with the high load must run slower at the same discharge to take the same rotational torque, and (e) the reverse flow at the inlet and the swirling velocity component at the outlet of the front impeller with the high load require making the rotational speed of the rear impeller with low load fairly faster at the lower discharge.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.
3-D visualization using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in a chaotic micromixer was performed as a reproduction experiment and the feasibility of 3-0 imaging technique in the microscale was confirmed. For diagonal micromixer (DM) and two types of staggered herringbone micromixers (SHM) designed by Whitesides et al., to verify the evolution of mixing, cross sectional images are reconstructed at the end of every cycle. In a DM, clockwise rotational flow motion generated by diagonal ridges placed on the floor of micromixer is observed and this motion makes the fluid commingle. On the contrary, there are two rotational flow structures in the SHM and the centers of rotation exchange their position each other every half cycle because of the V shape of ridges varying their orientation every half cycle. Local rotational flow and local extensional flow generated by the complicate ridge pattern make the flow be chaotic and accelerate the mixing of fluid. The dominant parameter that influences on the mixing characteristic of SHM is not the length of micromixer but the number of ridges under the same flow configurations.
The oxygen transfer rate at the liquid surface of the reciprocally shaking vessel was studied. The required power of the reciprocally shaking vessel was not proportional to the shaking frequency, unlike the rotational shaking vessel, and the liquid level suddenly fluctuated greatly at a certain frequency as the flow pattern in the vessel was a left and right wave flow different from that of the rotational shaking that has a rotational flow. The effect of the shaking frequency on the required power in the reciprocally shaking vessel was very complex, such as less power required than the rotational shaking vessel when the shaking frequency is more than 3 s-1, but the required power for the range of the generated rotational flow in the reciprocally shaking vessel could be correlated with the equation that was reported for the rotational shaking vessel. The kLa (mass transfer capacity coefficient) in the reciprocally shaking vessel also increased in a complex pattern because the required power for shaking was not consumed in a simple pattern, unlike kLa in the rotational shaking vessel, which increases linearly with increasing frequency. The kLa of the reciprocally shaking vessel was larger than the kLa of the rotational shaking vessel, and as the kLa value increased, the difference between them increased sharply. As a result, the oxygen transfer rate in the reciprocal motion was greater than that of the rotational motion, and could be correlated with the required power per unit volume.

Analysis of two-dimensional flow in an involute gear pump has been done by using FLUENT. Analysis extended to the turbulent flow includes the mass flow rate with functions of pressure difference between inlet and outlet, rotational velocities of involute gear, and clearances between tip of gear and housing. In general mass flow rate decreases with decreasing rotational velocity, and with increasing clearance and pressure difference. The flow rate efficiency of gear pump, which is defined with the theoretical flow rate, has been presented in terms of the above parameters.

The unsteady mixed convection Casson type MHD nanofluid flow in the stagnation point with motile microorganism around a spinning sphere is investigated. Time dependent flow dynamics is considered. Similarity transformations have been employed to transfer the governing partial differential structure into ordinary differential structure. The impact of distinct parameters is examined via tables and graphs. The impact of rotational parameter (spin) on profiles of velocity profiles, temperature and concentration is revealed for unsteady mixed convection Casson type MHD nanofluid flow. It is observed that it is clear that rotational parameter has a great effect on non-dimensional primary velocity component but rotational parameter has a slight impact on non-dimensional secondary velocity component. The validity of the current investigation is authorized through comparing the existing outcomes with previous published literature.

An experimental study was performed to develop the rotational fuel injection system of the micro turbojet engine. In this system, fuel is sprayed by centrifugal forces of engine shaft. The test rig was designed and manufactured to get droplet information on combustion space. This experimental apparatus consist of a high speed rotational device(Air-Spindle), fuel feeder, rotational fuel injector and acrylic case. To understand spray characteristics, spray droplet size, velocity and distribution were measured by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) and spray was visualized by using Nd-Yag laser-based flash photography. From the test results, the length of liquid column from injection orifice is controlled by the rotational speeds and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) is decreased with rotational speed. Also, Sauter Mean Diameter is increased as increasing mass flow rate at same rotational speeds.

An experimental investigation has been made for flow in a circular cylinder with a rotating bottom disk. Flow system considered in this paper is a characteristic model of interior flows of an electric washing machine. Flows in a tub of an electric washing machine are driven by a rotating bottom disk called a pulsator. The simple and characteristic model was composed of a circular cylinder with impulsively rotating endwall disk and a viscous fluid in it. Rotational motion of the pulsator is periodic and alternative in rotation direction. The flow field in the interior region is governed by a horizontal boundary layer forms on the impulsively rotating disk. Experimental approach was accomplished by adopting an image processing technique for velocity measurements. Comprehensive details of the flow structure are presented. Also a meridional circulation is obtained by tracking image particles suspended in the fluid. Flow structure and data are successfully procured for this complex rotating flow field.
This research effort examines the flow behavior and heat transfer assessment of water carrying iron (iii) oxide magnetic fluid due to a rotating and moving plane lamina under the influence of magnetic dipole. The effect of rotational viscosity and magnetic body force is taken into consideration in the present study. The involvement of the moving disk makes a significant contribution to the velocity distribution and heat transfer in rotational flow. Vertical movement of the disk keeps the flow unsteady and the similarity transformation converts the governing equation of unsteady flow into nonlinear coupled differential equations. The non-dimensional equation in the present system is solved through the finite element procedure. Optimizing the use of physical parameters described in this flow, such results can be useful in the rotating machinery industries for heat transfer enhancement.

High-temperature superconducting rotors offer advantages in terms of output-to-weight ratio and efficiency compared to conventional phase conduction motors or generators. The rotor can be cooled by conduction cooling, which attaches a cryocooler, and by refrigerant circulation, which uses circulating liquid or gas neon, helium and hydrogen. Recent work has focused on environmental issues and on high-temperature superconducting motors cooled with liquid hydrogen that can be combined with fuel cells. However, to ensure smooth supply and return of the cryogenic cooling fluid, a cryogenic rotational coupling between the rotating and stationary parts is necessary. Additionally, the development of a sealing structure to minimize fluid leakage applicable to the coupling is essential. This study describes the design and performance evaluation of a non-contact sealing method, specifically a labyrinth seal, which avoids power loss and heat load caused by friction in contact sealing structures. The seal design incorporates a spiral flow path to reduce leakage using centrifugal force, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the flow path and rotational speed. A performance evaluation device was configured and employed to evaluate the designed seal. The results of this study will be used to develop a cryogenic rotational coupling with supply and return flow paths for cryogenic applications.
