  • Tube axial fans were designed to provide effective cooling for a personal computer by using $DasignFan^{TM}$ software. With basic input parameters of flow rate, pressure rise, rotating speed, and fan diameter, three dimensional geometry of blade is automatically generated and its performance and overall sound pressure level are predicted. In this steady, the newly developed fans of 60 mm and 80 mm diameters were proved to provide a very promising mode of low noise, compared with manufactured products.

  • In monitoring and diagnosing machinery with gear trains, gear meshing force are the important signature indicating the operating condition. The gear meshing forces, however, are extremely difficult to be measured while gears are rotating. One easy possible way is to measure vibrations which are produced and transferred by the gear meshing forces. While the gear meshing forces are traveling, the force waveforms are shaped by the path transfer function. In the paper, the way to recover the source waveform by eliminating the path effects is discussed using inverse filter.

  • This paper presents a new approach integrated Case-Based Reasoning with Self- Organization Map(SOM) in diagnosis systems. The causes of faults are obtained by case-base trained from SOM. When the vibration problem of rotating machinery occurs, this provides an exact diagnosis method that shows the fault cause of vibration problem. In order to verify the performance of algorithm, we applied it to diagnose the fault cause of the electric motor.

  • Water seals are used in a washing machine to seal rotating shafts and to prevent the penetration of dust, dirt or water from the outside. The design parameters of water seals, that were the location of the garter spring, the angle of the seal lip, and the interference, were investigated by the computer simulations using the hyperelastic non-linear large deformation finite element analysis code. The maximum contact stress and the distribution of stress on the seal lip were obtained for various type of water seals. The best type among the several investigated seals was selected considering the contact force and the sealing performance.

  • In the present study, the unsteady in a square-selctional 180.deg. curved duct are experimentally investigated. The experimental study using air in a square-sectional 180.deg. curved duct is carried out to measure axial velocity distributions with data acquisition and processing system. In this system, Rotating Machinery Resolver(RMR) and PHASE Software are used to obtain the results of unsteady flows. In conclusion, the exact measurement of unsteady flow using LDV system depends upon uniformity of metreials, duct thickness, and scattered particles.

  • There are several bearing systems at the large steam-turbines in thermal power plant. The bearing system is one of the most important parts of rotating machinery. The steam turbine vibrations mainly depend on the bearing oil and the shaft alignment condition. This paper describes on the steam turbine abnormal vibration due to the oil whip in terms of the shaft alignment in the thermal power plant.

  • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) and HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons) that are chemically stable were proven to be a greenhouse gases that can destroy ozone layer. On the other hand, HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) was developed as an alternative refrigerant for them, but HFCs still have a relatively higher radiative forcing, resulting in a large Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1,300. Current regulations prohibit production and use of these chemicals. In addition, obligatory removal of existing material is in progress. Methods for the decomposition of these material can be listed as thermal cracking, catalytic decomposition and plasma process. This study reports the development of low cost and high efficiency plasma scrubber. Stability of steam plasma generation and effect of plasma parameters such as frequency of power supply and reactor geometry have been investigated in the course of the development. Method for effective removal of by-product also has been investigated. In this study, elongated rotating arc was proven to be efficient in decomposition of HFCs above 99% and to be able to generate stable steam plasma with steam contents of about 20%.

  • In this paper, a study on the efficiency improvement of the magnetic levitation train using the LIM (Linear Induction Motor) was presented. The maglev train has the advantage of being environmentally friendly since much less noise and dust is produced. However, due to structural limitation, compared to a rotating induction motor, linear induction motor, the main propulsion engine of the maglev train has a relatively greater air gap and hence has the lower operation efficiency. In this paper, the relationship between the operating condition of the train and the slip frequency has been investigated to find out the optimum slip frequency that might improve the efficiency of the magnetic levitation train with linear induction motor. The slip frequency is variable during the operation by this relationship only within a range that does not affect the levitation system of the train. After that, the comparison of the efficiency between the conventional control method with the slip frequency fixed at 13.5[Hz] and the proposed method with the slip frequency variable from 9.5[Hz] to 6.5[Hz] has been conducted by simulation using Simplorer. Experiments of 19.5[ton] magnetic levitation trains owned by Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials were carried out to verify the simulation results.
