Rotating disks are used in various machines such as data storage device, gyroscope, circular saw, etc. Transverse vibration of a rotating disk is very important for the performance of these machines. This work proposes a method to suppress transverse vibration of a very flexible rotating disk in non-contacting manner. A system considered in this study is a very flexible rotating disk with a thrust bearing pad which is located underneath the rotating disk. The pressure force generated in the gap between the rotating disk and the thrust pad pushes the rotating disk in the direction of axis of rotation while the centrifugal force and the elastic recovery force push the rotating disk in reverse direction. The balance between these forces suppresses the transverse vibration of the rotating disk. A coupled disk-fluid system is analyzed numerically. The finite element method is used to compute the pressure distribution between the thrust pad and the rotating disk while the finite difference method is used to compute the transverse vibration of a rotating disk. Results show that the transverse vibration of the rotating disk can be suppressed effectively for certain combination of air bearing and operating parameters.
Rotating disks are used in various machines such as floppy disks, hard disk, turbines and circular sawblades. The problems of vibrations of rotating disks are important in improving these machines. Many investigators have dealt with these problem. Specially, vibrations of a rotating flexible disk taking into account the effect of air is difficult problem in simulation. The governing equation of a rotating flexible disk coupled to the surrounding fluid is investigated by a simple mathematical model. And several important parameters concerned with the stability of a rotating flexible disk are defined. Coupling strength between air and rotating flexible disk is proportional to square of disk radius directly and square root of the all of bending rigidity, disk density and thickness inversely. Lift-to-damping coefficient has relation to the onset of disk flutter.
The present work is an experimental and analytical study on a flexible disk rotating close to a rigid rotating disk in open air. In the analytical study, the air flow in the gap between the flexible disk and the rigid disk is modeled using Navier-Stokes and continuity equations while the flexible disk is modeled using the linear plate theory. The flow equations are discretized using the cell centered finite volume method (FVM) and solved numerically with semi-implicit pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE algorithm). The spatial terms in the disk equation are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM) and the time integration is performed using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental test-rig is designed to investigate the dynamics of the flexible disk when rotating close to a co-rotating, a counter-rotating and a fixed rigid disk, which works as a stabilizer. The effects of rotational speed, initial gap height and inlet-hole radius on the flexible disk displacement and its vibration amplitude are investigated experimentally for the different types of stabilizer. Finally, the analytical and experimental results are compared.
The present study investigates flow characteristics in a cavity with one rotating disk and co-rotating disks for application to HDD. The experiments are conducted for rotating Reynolds numbers of $5.5{\times}104$ to $1.10{\times}105$ and for gap ratios of 0.059 to 0.175 in a single rotating and 0.047 to 0.094 in co-rotating disk. Time-resolved velocity components and turbulence intensity on the rotating disks are obtained by using LDA measurements. Detailed Knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow vibration and heat transfer and to design head-arm assembly and hub height in HDD. The results indicate that the velocity field in HDD is changed largely by the rotating Reynolds numbers and hub height of the disk.

A study on dynamic characteristics of rotating disks in magneto optical disk drives is presented. Natural frequencies of rotating disks are investigated experimentally and numerically. The frequency response and critical speeds of the ASMO disk are discussed. The characteristics of airflow around the disk and their effects on disk vibrations are also investigated. It is found that the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies of rotating disks agrees well with the experimental results. The airflow around the disk in the cartridge affects the characteristics of the disk vibrations to reduce the modal frequencies of the disk. The experiment shows that negative vertical offsets of the disk in the cartridge possibly increase the vibration amplitudes. As being influenced by the geometry of the cartridge, the rotation of the disk causes an asymmetric airflow in the presence of window.
The present study investigates the local heat/mass transfer characteristics on a rotating disk which is the top disk covered with a shroud in HDD. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disk. Flow field measurements using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and numerical calculations are performed to analyze the flow patterns induced by the disk rotation. HDD has been developed for compactness and speedy data access, thus the rotating velocity of the disk is increased and the height of a hub is decreased. The experiments are conducted for the various hub heights of 5, 10 and 15 mm, for the rotating Reynolds numbers of $5.5{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and for the effects of the presence of a read/write head arm. The results show that the heat transfer on the rotating disk is enhanced considerably for the decrease of the hub height and for the increase of the rotating Reynolds number. The head arm inserted in the cavity decreases the heat transfer despite the enhancement of tangential RMS velocity because of the deficit of the momentum in the flow field.
A theoretical study for a forced uniform flow impinging on a rotating disk, typically involved in Chemical Vapor Deposition(CVD) and Vapor-phase Axial Deposition(VAD) processes, has been carried out. A set of exact solutions for flow and temperature fields are developed by employing a similarity variable obtained from force balance on a control volume near the disk. The solutions depend on the rotating speed of the disk, .omega., and the forced flow speed toward the disk, a. For constant forced flow speed, the overall boundary layer thickness decreases when the rotating speed increases. Approximately 5%, 15%, and 30% decreases of the thickness are obtained for .omega./a = 2, 5, and 10, respectively, compared to the case of .omega./a = 0 (axisymmetric stagnation point flow). For constant rotating disk speed the boundary layer thickness immediately decreases as the forced flow speed increases, compared to the case of .omega./a .rarw. .inf. (induced flow near a rotating disk). Effects of .omega. and a on heat transfer coefficient are studied and explained with the boundary layer characteristics.
Rotating annular disks are widely used in data storage devices such as CDs, DVDs(digital versatile disks), and HDs(hard disks) as well as in traditional industrial machines like sawing machines, turbines, brake disks. The exact stress distribution of rotating polar orthotropic disk is derived by solving directly the equilibrium equation instead of using stress function. Stress distributions for typical GFRP and CFRP disks are presented in addition to polycarbonate disk. The results show that the application of CFRP to rotating disk can increase the maximum allowable rotating speed but this may not be applicable to GFRP disk.
The photocatalytic oxidation of Rhodamine B (RhB) was studied using immobilized $TiO_2$ and rotating disk photocatalytic reactor. Immobilized $TiO_2$ onto the surface of the aluminum plate was employed as the photocatalyst and two 20 W germicidal lamps and two 20 W UV-BLB lamps were used as the light source and the reactor volume was 1.0 L. The effects of parameters such as the number of rotating disk, rpm of rotating disk, the number of coating, $H_2O_2$ and photo-fenton amounts, and the concentrations of anions and cations ($NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $Cl^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Na^+$) were examined.
In this paper, we proposed a laser-based non-contact temperature measuring method for high speed rotating polycarbonate (PC) disk using transparency change of thermocolor. The thermocolor has abilities to change color and transparency due to a change in temperature. The thermocolor is applied on one side of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The thermocolor applied membrane is attached to inside of reaction chamber in disk. An optical system consisted of a laser beam radiator and a laser photometer is installed. Laser is irradiated at the bottom side of disk and the transmitted laser beam is detected by the laser photometer at the opposite side of disk. During the disk is rotating, laser is irradiated and detected simultaneously. The laser photometer senses the transmitted laser power and generates voltage as output. The temperature of disk can be detected during the disk is rotating up to 3000 RPM.
