  • An experimental study has been performed on the flow over a rotating disk, where the diameter of the disk is 500 mm and the maximum vertical deviation of the upper surface is $50 \mu{m}$ for the whole range of the angular velocity up to 3400 rpm. The flow visualization experiment for the wall jet flow induced by impinging circular jet is carried out using schlieren system and measurements are made by 3-hole and 5-hole pitot tubes. Schlieren photographs show that as the rotating speed increases the wall jet flow becomes more stable and the size of the largest eddies becomes smaller. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the stationary disk verify the accuracy of the present experiment, and those for free rotating disk flow display the existence of transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the rotating disk exhibit the interaction between the wall jet and the viscous pumping effect, which explains the decay in size of turbulent eddies illustrated by the schlieren photographs.

  • The study was performed to understand combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. Liquid fuel is discharged radially outwards through injection holes drilled in the high speed rotating shaft. We observed atomizing characteristics with variation of fuel nozzle rotating speed by using PDPA system. The mean drop diameter highly depends on fuel nozzle rotating speed. In KARI combustion test facility, Ignition and combustion tests were performed by using real scale combustor. In the test results, ignition and combustion efficiency were increased according to increasing fuel nozzle rotating speed. The measured radial temperature distribution at the combustor exit shows stable and fairly good distribution.

  • Hydraulic systems are used to transform mechanical energy and fluid energy into each other. Its applications are very wide over the whole industries such as automobiles, public works, rockets, machine tools, construction heavy equipments, airplaces and so on. They are hydraulic pumps that transform energy in the systems. In this study, with basic operation principles as a start point, I tried to understand how the rotating radius of a piston affects the lubrication characteristics in more practical conditions, a swash-plate with tilt angle zero capable of rotating motion and other devices was used. In this paper, a slipper was located on 45mm eccentricity from the center of a swash-plate. As a result, through this experiment, it was found that the rotating radius of a piston affects load capacity, leakage flow and lubrication characteristics and it is one of the important parts for improving the pump efficiency.

  • Pressure coefficient in rotating discharge hole was measured to gain insight into the influence of rotation to the discharge characteristics of rotating discharge hole. Pressure measurements were done by the telemetry system that had been developed by the authors. The telemetry system measures static pressure using piezoresistive pressure sensors. Pressure coefficients in rotating discharge hole were measured in longitudinal direction and circumferential direction with various rotating speed and 3 pressure ratios. From the results, the pressure coefficient, and therefore the discharge coefficient, is known to decrease with the increase of Ro number owing to the increase of flow approaching angle to the discharge hole inlet. However, there exists critical Ro number where the decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number changes abruptly; flow separation occurs from the discharge hole exit at this critical Ro number. Critical Ro number increases with the increase of length-to-diameter ratio, but the increase is small where the length-to-diameter ratio is higher than 3. The decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number depends on the pressure recovery at the discharge hole, and the rate is different from each length-to-diameter ratio; it has tendency that the short discharge hole shows higher decrease rate of discharge coefficient.

  • This research investigates the electromechanical characteristics of a spindle motor in a free-falling mobile hard disk drive before unexpected shock. Electromechanical simulation includes a time-stepping finite element analysis of the magnetic field in a speed controlled brushless DC motor and dynamic analysis of the stationary and rotating part linked by the fluid dynamic bearing under the free-falling condition. Analysis results show that the dynamic characteristics of the rotating spindle system during free-falling state have an effect on the relative motion between the stationary and rotating part of HDD. It results from the variation of reaction force in the bearing area due to the gravity force exerted on the rotating part of HDD, and the free-falling condition can be detected by observing the signal of the spindle motor and disk-head interface without using an accelerometer.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the working status and Standard Shiftwork Index (SSI) between night shift-fixed nurses and rotating shift nurses. Methods: Participants were 367 nurses working as registered nurses at 7 different medical institutions. The data were collected from August 8, 2016 to September 30, 2016. Results: Night shift fixed nurses were more satisfied with work schedule than rotating shift nurses. Rotating shift nurses reported higher SSI scores, such as chronic fatigue, musculoskeletal problems, than night shift fixed nurses. In SSI's sub-items, rotating shift nurses reported higher scores, such as the amount of sleep, feeling well after sleep, heartburn or stomach-ache and heartbeat irregularities, than night shift fixed nurses. Conclusion: The results indicated that night shift fixed system might be an effective method to improve nurses' work satisfaction. It is necessary to figure out any suitable night shift fixed system based on the characteristics of each nursing organization. The SSI might be an useful tool to measure the nurses' satisfaction in reference to their work shift.

  • In this paper, finite element method was used for flow and strength analysis of AZ31 magnesium alloy under friction stir welding. The simulations were carried out by SYSWELD s/w, and the modeling of sheet was doned by unigraphics NX3 s/w. Welding variables for analysis were rotating speed and welding speed of tool. Also two-way factorial design method was applied to confirm the effect of welding variables on maximum temperature and stress of material used. From these results, the increaser welding speed of tool the decreaser maximum temperature, but the increaser maximum stress. Also the increaser rotating speed of tool the increaser maximum temperature, but the decreaser maximum stress. In addition the increaser welding speed of tool and the decreaser rotating speed of tool, the narrower heat effect zone. Finally rotating speed of tool influenced on maximum temperature more than welding speed of tool, and welding speed of tool influenced on maximum stress more than rotating speed of tool from the variance analysis.

  • The vibrational system of this study is consisted of a rotating cantilever pipe conveying fluid and the tip mass. The equation of motion is derived by using the Lagrange equation. The influences of the rotating angular velocity and the velocity of fluid flow in a cantilever pipe have been studied on the dynamic characteristics of a rotating cantilever pipe by the numerical method. The effects of a tip mass on the dynamic response of a cantilever pipe are also studied. The tip-amplitude and maximum tip-deflection of each direction are directly proportional to the tip mass of the cantilever pipe in steady state. It identifies that the influence of the fluid velocity and the rotating angular velocity of the cantilever pipe give much variation the bending tip-displacement of steady state and the bending tip-displacement of non-steady state, respectively. The influence of the rotating angular velocity gives much the deflection of axial direction.

  • A study has been made on how to occur inertial oscillations in a rotating flow. The flow is considered to be induced by differentially-rotating top and bottom disks with infinite radius. The top and bottom disks are assumed to be set in motion over a finite initial start-up time duration from initial solid body rotation ($\Omega$) to each finial state, i.e., the top disk is rotating at the angular velocity (${\Omega}+{\Delta}{\Omega}$) and the bottom disk (${\Omega}-{\Delta}{\Omega}$). The system Reynolds number, which is a reciprocal of conventional Ekman number in rotating flows, is very high so that a boundary layer flow near disks is pronounced. From a strict theoretical analysis, it is clearly found the fact that inertial oscillation in a rotating flow is caused by excessive input of torque during start-up phase. Above finding comes from the following physics of theoretical result: in the case of abrupt start-up within very shorter time-duration than spin-up time scale, the inertial oscillation is magnified but it could be completely depressed in the case of mildly accelerated start-up, i.e., start-up process being established over diffusion time scale.
