  • The problem of amplitude-and frequency-modulated waveforms is analyzed when a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave is scattered by a slowly rotating rotor with metal plates. ECM in conjunction with a quasi-stationary method is used to analyze the modulated waveforms. The modulated waveforms depend on the orientation and dimension of the object. its rotation speed, and very strongly on the incident and scattering directions. The modulate waveforms of a rotating non-skewed metal plate and a rotor with two blades are functions of twice the rotating frequency of those. Similar results are discussed for a rotating skewed metal plate, but the modulated waveforms is a function of the rotating frequency. Numerical results based on our ECM are presented and compared with those of Sikta's and PO solution.

  • A rotating cryogenic system was designed similar to the cooling system for the rotor of a superconducting generator. The experimental rotor has an inner vessel which simulates the winding space of an actual superconducting rotor, and a torque tube of comparable design. This paper describes the evaluation of the total heat leak into the inner vessel that leads to the study of the heat transfer characteristic of the rotating cryogenic system. To examine the insulation performance of the experimental rotor. temperature was measured at each part of the system at various rotaing speeds from 0 rpm to 600 rpm. Total heat leak into the inner vessel was calculated by measuring the boil-off rate of liquid helium. Conduction heat leak to the inner vessel was obtained by the vent tube, and radiation heat leak was calculated by subtracting the conduction heat lent from the total heat leak. There seemed to be no rotaional dependency of total heat leak at least up 600 rpm.

  • An application of contra-rotating rotors, in which a rear rotor is in tandem with a front one and these rotors rotate in the opposite direction each other, has been proposed against a demand for developing higher specific speed axial flow pump. One prototype rotors, which we have designed with a conventional method, has given the positive slope of head characteristic curve especially in the rear rotor. It is necessary to understand the internal flow behavior in the rear rotor to establish the design guideline for achieving higher and more reliable performance. In the present study, we carried out the experimental investigations of the internal flow field of the rear rotor, especially at the partial flow rate, by Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) for the main flow and the limiting streamlines observation on rotor surfaces for the boundary layer flows.

  • Experiments were done for performance and flow characteristics of a counter-rotating axial flow fan. Performance curves of a counter-rotating axial flow fan were obtained and compared by varying the blade pitch angles. The fan characteristic curves were obtained following the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fan flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe and a slanted hot-wire. The velocity profiles between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed at the peak efficiency point. The peak efficiency of the counter-rotating axial flow fan was improved about 15% respectively, compared with the single rotating axial fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively law efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. The counter-rotating axial flow fan showed that the swirl velocity generated by the front rotor was eliminated by the rear rotor and the associated dynamic pressure is recovered in the from of the static pressure rise.

  • Experiments were done for the comparison of performance and flow characteristics between a two stage axial flow fan and a counter-rotating axial flow fm. The fan performance curves were obtained by the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fan flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe by the non-nulling method. Each stage of the two stage axial flow fan used for the present study has an eight bladed rotor and thirteen stator blades. The front and the rear rotor of the counter-rotating axial flow fan have eight blades each and are driven by coaxial counter rotating shafts through a gear box located between the rear rotor and the electric motor. Both of the two axial fan configurations use identical rotor blades and the same operating conditions for the one-to-one comparison of the two. Performance characteristics of the two configurations were obtained and compared by varying the blade setting angles and axial gaps between the blade rows. The passage flow fields between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed for the particular operating conditions of peak efficiency, minimum and maximum pressure coefficients.

  • A rotor dynamic analysis is implemented to confirm the vibration stability of the high speed centrifugal chiller coupled with gear system. As the rotating speed of the centrifugal chiller under investigation is increased up to 17605rpm at the pinion rotating part, the bearing instability is getting higher and, furthermore, the rotor-bearing system might experience a few critical speed which lead to system failure due to the excessive vibration. In this study, considering the loading capacity and stability conditions, offset journal bearings are adopted for the pinion rotating system and general cylindrical bearings are used for motor part. From the modal analysis, the system is found to be stable as the critical damping ratio which shows the damping characteristics of the system are positive over all operating ranges, and in addition, the synchronous rotating frequency does not come across with any whirl natural frequency. From these results the authors confirm the vibration stability of the rotor-bearing system suggested in this study.

  • Contra-rotating fan is comprised of two rotors which are rotating in the opposite direction. The fan stages are named rotor-1 and rotor-2. Benefits from the use of contra rotation are in terms of better efficiency and improved thrust to weight ratio. Failure of contra-rotating fan stage blade in-service results in safety risks, repair costs, and revenue losses. This paper focuses on the vibration analysis and one way fluid-structure interaction of high aspect ratio, low speed contrarotating fan rotors. Modal analysis and modal pre-stress analysis of contra-rotating fan rotors were carried out to calculate the natural frequencies, One way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) was carried out where the computational analysis of the blades was performed using ANSYS CFX. The boundary conditions for CFD analysis were considered from the actual experimental velocity flow field at the inlet and pressure outlet. Based on the results obtained from the CFD analysis, the structural analysis such as deformation and Von-Misses stresses was carried out by using the finite element method (FEM) with ANSYS. The results provide necessary guidelines for the safe running of the contra-rotating fan. The analysis also will be helpful to understand the change of flow behavior due to a rotor deformation.

  • The finite element analysis for rotor bearing systems has been an essential tool for design, identification, and diagnosis of rotating machinery. Among others, the unbalance response analysis is fundamental in the vibration analysis of rotor bearing systems because rotating unbalance is recognized as a common sourve of vibration in rotating machinery. However there still remains a problem in the aspect of computational efficiency for unbalance response analysis of large rotor bearing systems. Gyroscopic terms and local bearing parameters in rotor bearing systems often make matters worse in unbalance response computation due to the complicated dynamic properties such as rotational speed dependency and/or anisotropy. The present paper proposes an efficient method for unbalance responses of multi-span rotor bearing systems. An improved substructure synthesis scheme is introduced which makes it possible to compute unbalance responses of the system by coupling unbalance responses of substructures that are of self adjoint problem with small order matrices. The present paper also suggests a scheme to easily deal with gyroscopic tems and local, coupling or bearing parameters. The proposed method causes no errors even though the computational effort is reduced drastically. The present method is demonstrated through three test examples.

  • A lot of rotating machines are being used in the industrial world and electric motor and generator take the most part of it. When it comes to the electric motor and generator, we can not help thinking about the eddy current because it brings a loss of electric and can be a important reason of the heat generation. To attenuate eddy current. laminated silicon steel sheets are being used in general. Especially, laminated rotor is being used for rotating part of the electric motor and generator and it decreases electrical loss and heat generation but we can be faced with another problem. In general, most of the motor and generator can be normally operated under 3600rpm because they are designed to have the first critical speed more than that speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the first critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed. large scale and high precision in industrial world. The critical speed can be determined from the inertia and stiffness for the rotor and bearing of rotating systems. The laminated rotor stiffness can be hardly determined because it can be derived a lot factors for instance rotor material and shape. lamination material and shape. insulation material. lamination force and so on. In this paper, the change of the natural frequency of the motor was examined with the change of the lamination force as an experimental method.
