The study was conducted to investigate the effect of rootstock on growth and early yield of stenting-propagated cut roses (Rosa hybrida Hort.) 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King'. The scions, prepared as single-node cuttings, each with a five-leaflet leaf, were grafted onto cuttings of Rosa indica 'Major', Rosa multiflora 'Chille Wonye No. 1', Rosa multiflora 'K-1', or Rosa multiflora 'Burr' as the rootstock. The rootstock cuttings were removed of all leaves and buds before grafting. The base of scion and the top of rootstock were held together and simultaneously cut at a $45^{\circ}$ angle for ease of grafting. Scion-rootstock unions were stuck in rockwool cubes and placed on a misted glasshouse bench for rooting before being transplanted into a rockwool slabs for cultivation. Rooting was the greatest in the 'Pink Aurora' and 'Yellow King' grafted on the rootstock Rosa indica 'Major'. In 'Pink Aurora', stem length, stem diameter, five-leaflet leaves per stem, and stem fresh weight of the harvested cut flowers were not affected by the rootstock. The greatest total yield of 'Pink Aurora' was obtained in plants grafted onto the Rosa indica 'Major' rootstock. Overall growth of 'Yellow King' was the greatest in plants grafted onto Rosa multiflora 'Burr' rootstock, although total yield was not affected by the rootstock. These results suggest that Rosa indica 'Major' is the most effective rootstock not only for rooting, but also for early yield and growth for stenting propagation of these cut roses.

M.7 rootstock is moderately resistant to fire blight. However, M.7 is generally too vigorous for high-density apple systems, but it can be grafted onto cultivars that exhibit weak tree growth, such as 'Sansa'. This study investigated the vegetative growth, yield, and fruit quality of 'Sansa' apple trees grafted on M.7 or M.9 rootstocks to assess the feasibility of establishing domestic high-density apple systems using M.7 and to determine the optimum exposure length for rootstocks. Trees were planted with exposed rootstock lengths of 5, 10, and 15 cm. The vegetative growth of apple trees grafted onto M.7 was greater than that of M.9 and vegetative growth tended to decrease as the exposed length of rootstock increased. However, the differences in yield per tree, average weights, soluble solids contents, and titratable acidity due to the rootstock and its exposure length varied. The accumulated yield over a 10 year period and the yield efficiency of M.7 were lower than that of M.9 and the yield efficiency tended to decrease as the exposed length of rootstock increased. When apple trees were grafted onto M.9, biennial bearing and tree vigor weakening occurred if the exposed length of the rootstock was over 10 cm. Conversely, when apple trees were grafted onto M.7, vegetative growth was excessive if the exposed length of rootstock was below 10 cm. Based on the results from this study, the optimum M.7 and M.9 exposure lengths for 'Sansa' were 15 cm and 5 cm, respectively.
This study evaluated the effect of water content in the substrate during pre- and post-grafting period on the survival rate and quality of tomato plug seedlings. Nine combinations of three water levels (high, medium, and low) were set up in the substrate of both scion and rootstock. The water content in the substrate of the scion did not affect the survival rate of grafted tomato seedlings, while the survival rate was statically different among the various water contents in the substrate of the rootstock. The maximum survival rates (100%) were observed in seedlings treated with high water levels in the substrate of the rootstock, and the survival rates declined with decreasing water content in the rootstock substrate. The growth characteristics were not significantly affected by different water content in the scion substrate, while they were statically different among the seedlings treated with various water contents in the rootstock substrate. The growth characteristics decreased with decreasing water content in the rootstock substrate. The highest value of compactness was observed in grafted seedlings, which combined medium water level in the scion and high water level in the rootstock substrate treatment. The root morphology of tomato seedlings was also affected by water content in the rootstock substrate. The total root surface area, total root length, and number of root tips decreased with deceasing water content in the rootstock substrate.
Leaf damage by apple leafminer, Lyonetia prunifoliella, was surveyed on Fuji apple orchards with seedling rootstock from 1992 to 2001 and with M.9 rootstock from 1999 to 2001. The damage was negligible in apple orchards with seedling rootstock as 0.15% in 1992 and 0.06% in 1993. However it sharply increased to more than 3.39% since 1994, reaching at peak damage of 6.28% to 7.78% in 1996 to 1998. Damages on apple orchards with M.9 rootstock from 1999 to 2001 were higher as 6.09% to 15.3%, compared with those with seedling rootstock in the same years. In seedling rootstock apple, the damage was highest on september but in M.9 rootstock apple, the difference was not significant. Leaf damage showed no differences between cultivars including 4 Korean cultivars and Fuji. These results may explain that increase of M.9 rootstock apple orchards is responsible for the recent outbreak of the leafminer in Korea.
In order to produce young leaf of butterbur(Petasites japoflicus MAX.) in early spring, the planting date and relationship between abscisic acid(ABA) content and dormancy were investigated. Under open field condition, the dormancy of rootstock was initiated in the beginning of October, was the deepest in the middle of November and was completely broken in the end of December. When those periods were converted by the low accumulation hour below 5$^{\circ}C$, 900 hours were required approximately. This means that the rootstock needs for dormant breaking necessitates under the low temperature. In relationship between growing period and ABA content, the ABA in root-stock did not exist during maximum growing period, from April to September. This means that the ABA together with other substances in rootstock can be transferred to the shoot part with sprouting. While shoot part withered by decreacing the open field temperature since October, the ABA intiated to exist in rootstock. This means that the ABA in the shoot part can be transferred to the rootstock part. Therefore, it was concluded that the ABA which has been known that inhibiting growth and inducing dormancy was closely related with dormancy of rootstock.
Twelve antagonistic strains against Fusarium wilt of watermelon-rootstock gourd were selected from 54 bacterial isolates which were isolated from the rhizosphere of crop plants growing in various locations. They showed strong inhibitory effects on growth of Fusarium osysporum f. sp. niveum, the causal agent of watermelon-rootstock gourd Fusarium wilt. Among these antagonists, the isolate YJ-3 was the most pronounced in growth-promoting ability for watermelon-rootstock gourd. The growth of watermelon-rootstock gourd in bed soil inoculated with YJ-3 was better by 46 and 13% than those in commercial bed soil alone and in bed soil inoculated with commercial microbial inoculant, respectively. The antagonistic plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium, strain No. YJ-3, was identified as Bacillus sp. on MIDI system. Furthermore, Bacillus sp. YJ-3 showed antifungal activity on growth against Alternaria cucumerina, Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum orbiculare, Didymella bryoniae, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum.
Two oriental melons cultivars, ‘Geumssaragi Euncheon’(GSEC) and ‘House Eunchon’(HEC), were grafted onto different rootstocks and the growth, mineral contents and fruit quality were examined. The seedlings grafted onto‘Geumtozwa’rootsticks showed about 10% defected seedling loss(wilting or dwarfing0as compared to the little or no loss in the seedlings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. The seedings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks also exhibited better vine growth as compared to the intact seedlings or the seedlings grafted onto 'Geumtozwa' rootstocks. The fruits growth, as measured by fruits length, fruit diameter and fruit fresh weight, was accelerated by the rootstocks especially by 'Sintozwa' and 'Chamtozwa' . Intact oriental melons showed the highest soluble solids content in the fruit pericarp followed by 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. Sucrose contents were higher in the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa', whereas higher glucose and fructose contents were measured in intact GSEC fruits or HEC fruits on 'Chamtozwa' rootstock. As compared to the intact plants, the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa' rootstock showed higher N. P and K and lower Ca and Mg contents in leaves, stems, roots and fruits. 'Geumtozwa' rootstock, developed specially for oriental melons, showed very similar pattern of mineral absorption or distribution as compared to the intact plants.

Grafting using a pumpkin (Cucurbita sp.) rootstock is an effective way to improve cucumber (Cucumis sativus) resistance to a combination of chilling and salinity stresses. We evaluated the tolerance of 15 pumpkin cultivars to chilling, salinity, and combined stresses at the germination and seedling stages. Selected plant characteristics, including germination rate, germination potential, germination index, plant height, stem thickness, fresh weight, and dry weight, were analyzed. We used the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean for cluster analyses to determine the stress tolerance levels of the pumpkin cultivars. The 15 cultivars were divided into three clusters: tolerant, moderately tolerant, and susceptible to stress treatments. The stress tolerances of all cultivars were variable in the germination and seedling stages, and most cultivars were not tolerant to individual treatments of chilling or salinity stresses at both stages. These results suggest that identifying suitable cultivars for use as rootstock during cucumber grafting should involve the evaluation of stress tolerance during different growth stages. Additionally, cultivars tolerant to chilling stress may not be tolerant to salinity stress; therefore, the choice of pumpkin rootstock should depend on where the grafted plant will be grown. Cultivars tolerant to a combination of chilling and salinity stresses may be useful as rootstock for cucumber grafting. Our findings may serve as reference material for choosing appropriate pumpkin rootstocks for cucumber grafting.
Root-knot nematodes cause a significant damage on fruit yield and quality of green house growing crops. To asses the effect of eggplant rootstock, Torvum vigor', TaibyouVF' and 'Daitaro' were grafted on eggplants(Solanum melongena cv. Chookyang) and planted in root-knot nematode infested microplot in green house and compared their fruit yield, quality and plant growth with non-grafted control. Eggplant grafted with Torvum vigor had the highest fruit yield and top growth and followed by Daitaro. Non-grafted eggplant had lower yield but had higher root weight because of heavy root-knot nematode infection. Rootstock grafting in eggplant farming is a good alternative technique in root-knot nematode infested green houses without compromising fruit yield and can be applied instantly as organic farming practice.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock under different levels of light intensity (photosynthetic photon flux, PPF) and plug cell size in a closed transplant production system with artificial lighting. Cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock seedlings were grown under the combinations of three levels of PPF (PPF 165, 248, and $313{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and five types of plug tray (50, 72, 105, 128, and 200 cells in the tray) for nine days. The shoot dry weight and relative growth rate increased with increasing PPF and plug cell size. As PPF increased, cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock seedlings had higher dry matter, lower specific leaf area, and lower hypocotyl length. The first true leaf of cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock unfolded at eight and seven days after sowing, respectively, except the treatment using 200-cell plug tray. The unfolding of first true leaf of seedlings grown in 200-cell plug tray was delayed by one day. Accordingly, it was considered that the use of small cell size such as 200-cell plug tray would require more time for the production of scion and rootstock. Based on the results, we suggest that cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock be grown in 105-cell to 128-cell plug tray for eight days and 72-cell to 105-cell plug tray for seven days, respectively, when using splice grafting method with root-removed rootstock. Additionally, higher PPF is suggested to improve the growth and quality of scion and rootstock.
