This study was compared the soil environment and growth and yield of onion (Allium cepa L.) treated with non-mulching (NM) and mulching polyethylene film (PEF) and two biodegradable films (BFI and BFII) commonly used in farmhouses. Visual observation confirmed the degradation of BFI and BFII films after 150 days after tansplanting (DAT). BFII increased light penetration into the films and reduced the weight maintenace after 180 DAT, with a high decompostion at 30 days after soil tilling. Soil moisture contents much fluctuated between -14 kP and - 0 kPa in NM plots, increasing the minimum soil temperature of BFI plots. Mulching treatments decreased soil organic matter contents but did not subtantially increase soil mineral nutrients, soil bulk density, and number of bacteria compared to those of NM plots. Onion root growth was increased by PEF and BFI treatments at an early growth stage, 60 DAT, with the most remarkable stem extension observed for PEF and BFI treatments after 150 DAT. PEF and BFI treatments increased the bulb's diameter, length, weight, and lodging at 180 DAT. BFI treatments exhibited a high portion of the "very large" category producing with 55.3 tons ha-1 based on the classification into bulb size, followed by PE (49.3 tons), NM (9.4 tons), and BFII treatments (2.7 tons) at 230 DAT.

Plant parasitic nematodes were isolated from 274 soil samples collected from soybean fields in Korea. Nematode importance rating in soybean is proposed based on this study and by reviewing other reports. Soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines is the most important nematode species and rated as $1^{st}$ because it detected from 38%(range 25-51%) of soil samples with high density except Jeju province. Root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp. is rated $2^{nd}$ and is more widely distributed in southern provinces, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Jeju province (detection rate ranged 16-44%). Pratylenchus is rated $3^{rd}$ and is more frequently detected from northern provinces such as Gyeonggi and Gangwon (detection rate ranged 10-13%). Helicotylenchus is rated $4^{th}$ and is particularly important in Jeju province (detection rate is 62% and numbers averaged 571 nematodes/$300cm^3$ soil), which is the main production area for sprouting soybean in Korea. Tylenchorhynchus, Paratylenchus, Criconema, Criconemoide, Mesocriconema, Ogma, Xiphinema, Paratrichodorus, and Trichodorus occur in low frequency and density, thus they are rated to $5^{th}$. We propose to delete following nematode genus from the list of soybean parasitic nematode in Korea because their parasitism on soybean is unconfirmed or negligible; Tylenchus, Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Ditylenchus, Hirschmanniella immamuri, Basiria graminophila, Psilenchus, and Pseudhalenchus. Therefore, we revised 30 species in 16 genera as soybean parasitic nematodes in Korea. Importance rating is $1^{st}$ Heterodera glycines, $2^{nd}$ Meloidogyne spp., $3^{rd}$ Pratylenchus spp. and $4^{th}$ Helicotylenchus spp. especially in Jeju province.
A field experiments was carried out to investigate the physicochemical properties of soil and cucumber growth in vinyl house when irrigation point was made at 0.2, 1/3, 0.5 and 1.0 bar. The obtained results was summarized as follow: The taxonomic class of the soil used was loam and each content of the required water was 4.4, 7.3, 9.6 and 13.4 mm per each irrigation time at 0.2, 1/3, 0.5 and 1.0 bar treatments in spring culture, respectively. At 0.2 bar and 1.0 bar treatments, interval of irrigation was 2.3 and 14.8 day, the times of irrigation was 37 and 6, and total irrigation volume was 163.5 and 80.3 mm, respectively. After cucumber culture, pH, EC concentration and exchangeable K content of soil at 0.2 bar treatment was distributed near to the level of improvement target while EC, available $P_2O_5$ and exchangeable base content in other treatments were higher compared to improvement target. At 1.0 bar treatment, ratios of the solid and liquid phase were 44.9 and 27.1%, respectively, and bulk density was $1.26g\;cm^{-3}$ which was the highest among the treatments. At 0.2 bar treatment, the ratio of the solid and liquid phase was 41.7 and 22.8%, respectively, and bulk density was $1.09g\;cm^{-3}$ which was the lowest. The root length and radius at 0.2 bar treatment were best, while those at 1/3 bar were worst. At 0.2 bar treatment, the total yield was 7,269 kg and the weight of good products was 5,677 kg which was the highest among treatments. At 0.33 bar treatment, the yield was the lowest with the high ratio of deformity.

In this study, we developed the carbon emission factors for 4 major species of warm-temperate region in Korea, and tried to provide their carbon emissions and removals estimates using these carbon emission factors. We selected Castanopsis cuspidata, Camellia japonica, Quercus acuta and Quercus glauca as target species and derived their carbon emission factors. The basic wood density that serve as one of the carbon emission factors were 0.583 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 0.657 for Camellia japonica, 0.833 for Quercus acuta and 0.763 for Quercus glauca and their uncertainties ranged from 5.3 to 17.9%. Biomass expansion factors were calculated as well: 1.386 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 2.621 for Camellia japonica, 1.701 for Quercus acuta and 2.123 for Quercus glauca and associated uncertainties varied from 14.7 to 30.5%. Lastly root-shoot ratios for each species were also determined: 0.454 for Castanopsis cuspidata, 0.356 for Camellia japonica, 0.191 for Quercus acuta and 0.299 for Quercus glauca with the uncertainties lying within a range from 19.8 to 35.7%. These three carbon emission factors including basic wood density had the uncertainties of less than 40% recommended by FAO. Therefore the application of country-specific emission factors seemed to provide quite accurate estimates of carbon emissions and removals. The estimation of the carbon stored in the 4 species were also conducted which amounted to $186.10tCO_2/ha$ for Castanopsis cuspidata, $280.63tCO_2/ha$ for Camellia japonica, $344.04tCO_2/ha$ for Quercus acuta and $278.91tCO_2/ha$ for Quercus glauca and their annual carbon removals were $6.65tCO_2/ha/yr$, $6.25tCO_2/ha/yr$, $11.70tCO_2/ha/yr$ and $12.29tCO_2/ha/yr$, respectively. This systematic assessment of forest resources can be a reliable source of information for managing evergreen broadleaved forest in warm temperate regions and thus serve as useful data for effective decision-making to address vegetation zone shifts due to climate change.
This study was performed to delineate the subsurface geology, geologic structure, and distribution pattern of the Palgongsan granitic body, and to reveal the relationship between the Kyeongsang basin and Yongnam massif by gravity survey. The study area is located between the latitude of 35$^{\circ}$45'-36$^{\circ}$21'N and longitude of 128$^{\circ}$15'-129$^{\circ}$00'E. Total of 966 gravity data measured by Seoul National University, KlGAM(Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials), Pusan National University and Yonsei University were used. The Bouguer gravity anomaly in the study area ranges from -12.88 to 26.01 mgal with a mean value of 11.27 mgal. A very low anomaly zone is located in the Yongnam massif in west of the study area. The anomaly value increases going from west to east. A low anomaly distribution in Palgongsan granite and Yongnam massif is interpreted as the effect of their lower density than that of Kyeongsang Super Group. Power spectrum analysis is applied to evaluate the average depth of basement the Kyeongsang Basin and Conrad discontinuity from gravity anomaly. The average depths of density discontinuities are calculated 10.45 km and 4.9 km, and these are interpreted as Conrad discontinuity and depth of basement of the Kyeongsang Basin, respectively. The depth of Palgongsan granite is derived by means of 2-dimensional modeling and it decreases gradually toward the east. The gravity anomaly east of the study area decreases abruptly due to Shingryeong fault and Nogosan ring fault. Two deepest and sharp roots of Palgongsan granite are recognized by 2-dimensional modeling of each profiles. The depths of those roots are 5.3 km on a profile AA' and 7 km on a profile BB' which is the maximum depth of Palgongsan granite. Small granitic bodies are also seen to be intruded around the Palgongsan granite. The root of Palgongsan granite is shown by 3-dimensional analysis based on the interpolation of 2-dimensional modeling along each profiles to exist in the southwest vicinity of Palgongsan granite. The total volume of Palgongsan granite is approximately 31.211 $Km^3$.
As one part of the ecological studies of Korean white pine plantation, a synecological survey was made on the undergrowth vegetation of Korean white pine plantations of different age class i.e., 5, 15, 25, 35, and 40 year age classes under which shrub and ground vegetation were distinctly different. And, the results are summarized as follows. 1. In shrub, the important species is Corylus heterophylla var. japonica and the dominant species in each age-class stand are as follows; 5 year-class ; Quercus mongolica, Lespedeza Maximowiczi. 15 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica, Lespedeza Maximowiczi. 25 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica. 35 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica, Maackia amurensis. 40 year-class ; Corylus heterophylla var. japonica. 2. The higher the age class of the plantation are, the lower the height and the density of the shrub become. 3. Dominant species of ground-vegetation under the shrub of each age-class are as follows; 5 year-class ; Arundinella hirta var. cilia, Miscanthus purpurascens. 15 year-class ; Arundinella hirta var. ciliata, Potentilla Freyniana. 25 year-class ; Physematium manchuriense, Viola xanthopetala, Rubus craegifolius. 35 year-class ; Viola xanthopetala, Rubus crataegifolius. 45 year-class ; Viola xanthopetala, Rubus crataegifolius. 4. The standing crops of ground vegetation under the shrub were decreased with increasing age-class, which also caused the decreasing height and density and changing floristic composition of the shrub. 5. The ratio of the standing crop of root to the standing crop of shoot was increased as the age class increased. 6. The floristic composition of ground vegetation has shown a change from heliophyte to sciophytes on the sere.
This study aims to identify the natural damage of the Samcheonsaji Temple Site in Bukhansan National Park and to suggest the plans to minimize damage for the remains. The types of natural damage are classified into direct vegetation damage, indirect topographical damage, and artificial damage. The most popular causes of damage to temple sites include the roots of trees as direct vegetation damage and the soil erosion by rain or stream as topographical damage. Direct vegetation damage includes burial remains damaged by the root of trees and vines, but it is often observed that some trees have contributed to protection against collapse. Indirect topographical changes have damaged the ruins by soil erosion caused by floods or typhoons. Vegetation changes due to topographical reasons have also caused damage. Artificial reasons of damage include forestry operations and compaction by hikers. Based on the analysis of the findings, the following could be suggested as plans to resolve these problems: 1. Natural damage occurs slowly due to negligence. Therefore, it could be reduced by forestry improvement, including forest density control through thinning, planting to prevent landslides, maintaining grasslands nearby. 2. Deciduous broadleaf trees can be planted to reduce soil erosion by rainfall. It is necessary to maintain the density of forests at around $0.02{\sim}0.18trees/m^2$. 3. It would be good to grow Quercus spp and Carpinus spp or weaken the community of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pueraria lobata which disturb the ecosystem. Samcheonsaji Temple Site is located in Mt. Bukhan National Park that is a publicly owned property. Therefore, it is constantly maintained for natural preservation and vegetation management could be considered for the preservation of historical remains.
Landslides are one of the most prevalent natural disasters, threating both humans and property. Also landslides can cause damage at the national level, so effective prediction and prevention are essential. Research to produce a landslide susceptibility map with high accuracy is steadily being conducted, and various models have been applied to landslide susceptibility analysis. Pixel-based machine learning models such as frequency ratio models, logistic regression models, ensembles models, and Artificial Neural Networks have been mainly applied. Recent studies have shown that the kernel-based convolutional neural network (CNN) technique is effective and that the spatial characteristics of input data have a significant effect on the accuracy of landslide susceptibility mapping. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to analyze landslide vulnerability using a pixel-based deep neural network model and a patch-based convolutional neural network model. The research area was set up in Gangwon-do, including Inje, Gangneung, and Pyeongchang, where landslides occurred frequently and damaged. Landslide-related factors include slope, curvature, stream power index (SPI), topographic wetness index (TWI), topographic position index (TPI), timber diameter, timber age, lithology, land use, soil depth, soil parent material, lineament density, fault density, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) were used. Landslide-related factors were built into a spatial database through data preprocessing, and landslide susceptibility map was predicted using deep neural network (DNN) and CNN models. The model and landslide susceptibility map were verified through average precision (AP) and root mean square errors (RMSE), and as a result of the verification, the patch-based CNN model showed 3.4% improved performance compared to the pixel-based DNN model. The results of this study can be used to predict landslides and are expected to serve as a scientific basis for establishing land use policies and landslide management policies.
This study aimed to determine the photosynthesis and growth characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum T. grown under aquaponics in a plant factory (AP) by comparing those grown under hydroponic cultivation system (HP). The AP system raised 30 fishes at a density of 10.6 kg·m-3 in a 367.5 L tank, and at HP, nutrient solution was controlled with EC 1.3 dS·m-1 and pH 6.5. The pH level ranged from 4.0 to 7.1 for the AP system and 4.0 to 7.4 for the HP system. The pH level in the AP began to decrease with an increase in nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and lasted bellower than pH 5.5 for 15-67 DAT. It was found that ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) continued to increase even under low pH conditions. EC was maintained at 1.3 to 1.5 dS·m-1 in both systems. The concentration of major mineral elements in the fish tank was higher than that of the hydroponics, except for K and Mg. There was no significant difference in the photosynthesis characteristics, but the PIABS parameters were 30.4% lower in the AP compared to the HP at the 34DAT and 12.0% lower at the 74DAT. There was no significant difference in the growth characteristics, but the petiole length was 56% longer in the leaf grown under the AP system. While there was no significant difference in the fresh and dry weights of leaf and root, the leaf area ratio was 36.43% higher in the AP system. All the integrated results suggest that aquaponics is a highly-sustainable farming to safely produce food by recycling agricultural by-products, and to produce Peucedanum japonicum as much as hydroponics under a proper fish density and pH level.
The purpose of present study is to analyze the genetic variation of natural stand of Pinus densiflora. In 1975 following after the selection of 1974, twenty trees from each of three natural populations of the species were selected and their open-pollinated seeds were collected, and the locations and conditions of the populations ate presented in table 1, 2 and figure 1. Some morphological traits of the populations were already detailed in our second report of this series, in which Myong-Ju and Ul-Jin populations were regarded to be superior phenotypically to suweon population. The morphological traits of cone, seed and seed-wing, and also the growth performances and needle characters of the seedling were observed in the present study according to the previous methods. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The meteorological data obtained by averaging the records of 30 year period (1931~1960) measured from the nearest meteorological stations to each population are shown in fig.2, 3, 4. The distributional patterns of investigated climate factors are generally considered to be similar among the locations. However, the precipitation density during growing season and the air temperature during dormant season on Suweon area, population 6, were quite different from those of the other areas. 2. The measurements of fresh cone weight, length, diameter and cone index, i.e., length to diameter ratio are presented in table 7. As shown in table 7, all these traits except for cone diameter seem to be highly significant in population differences and family differences within population. 3. The morphological traits of seed and seed-wing are detailed in table 8, 9, and highly significant differences are recognized among the populations and the families within population in seed-wing length, seed-wing index, seed weight, seed-length and seed index but not among the populations in the other observed traits. The values of correlation coefficient between the characters of cone and seed are given in table 10 and the positive significant correlations can be observed in the most parts of the compared traits. 4. Significant statistical differences among populations and families within population are observed in the growth performances of 1-0 and 1-1 seedling height of these progenies. But the differences in root collar diameter are shown only among families within population. As shown in table 13, the most parts of correlations are not significant statistically between the growth performances of seedling and the seed characters. 5. The number of stomata row on both sides of needle and the serration density were measured in the seedlings from each of the families of the three populations. As shown in table 15, statistical differences are considered to be significant among the populations and among the families within population in serration density but not among the populations in stomata row on both sides of the needle. The results differ from those of the third report of this series. Even if one of the reason seems to be the diversity of selected populations, it could not be confirmed definitely. The correlations between progenies and parents are not generally observed in the investigated traits of needle as shown in table 16.
