Three kinds of inoculation methods, capillary, root cutting and dipping were compared for an efficient way to screening the resistant tobacco variety against bacterial wilt, Ralstonia solanacearum. The pricking a capillary tube contained the pathogenic bacterial suspension(10$^{7}$ cfu/$m\ell$) to an axillary bud of each tobacco plant showed different resistance well between varieties. The less period was required in inoculating work and in disease development for the inoculation method used with capillary tube than for two other inoculation methods tested also.
Acanthopanax species (Araliaceae) has been traditionally used as tonic, analgesic, stimulant of immune system, and replenishment of body function. The antioxidant activities of leaf and root bark of Acanthopanax species were determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay and relative electrophoretic mobility (REM) on human plasma low density lipoproteins (LDL). Acanthopanax divaricatus var. albeofructus and Acanthopanax for. nambunensis showed potent antioxidant activities.
To control pythium root rot, Bacillus lentimorbus WJ5a17 with high anti-fungal activity against Pythium ultimum was induced from B. lentimorbus WJ5 by gamma radiation ($^{60}Co$). The biocontrollers of FWJ5 and FWJ5a17 were formulated ($1.0\times 10^{11}$) with B. lentimorbus WJ5 and WJ5a17, respectively, The population density of FWJ5 and FWJ5a17 maintained highly up to $1.0\times 10^{9}$ CFU $g^{-1}$ in nursery and field soils until 30 days after treatment. P. ultimum spores germination were inhibited 71.0% and 81.4% by FWJ5 and FWJ5a17, respectively. Pythium root rot of yea pepper, Chinese cabbage and radish were significantly (p < 0.05) controled by one time treatment of FWJ5 and FWJ5a17.

This study was conducted to get basic information on the occurrence of plant-parasitic nematodes for the establishment of nematode management strategy in major potato production areas in Korea. Nationwide soil collection was done in 11 areas of Cheju, Yesan, Gimchun, Goryoung, Hong chun, Pyungchang, Gimjae, Milyang, Namwon, Gangnung, and Inje in 2004-2005. Root-hot nematode juveniles(J2) were detected in 30 samples among the 50 samples. The average density was 12-69 J2/100cc soil. Pratylenchus sp., Helicotylenchus sp., Ditylenchus sp., Tylenchus sp., and Tylenchorhynchus sp. were also detected in various locations, however, their densities were very low. Root-knot nematode females were collected from tomato roots inoculated with the potato field soils for PCR-RFLP identification. The females from Cheju, Milyang, and Goryung showed PCR products of 500 bp. And the Dra I restriction enzyme digestions showing 290 bp and 230 bp fragments confirmed their identity as Meloidogyne hapla.
The effects of infection severity of susceptible tomato varieties, Rutgers and Boksu 2, by root-knot nematode, meloidogyne hapla, M. arenaria or M. javanica on plant growths and tomato yields were investigated. The inoculum levels of each nematode species were 0, 1,000 and 10,000 nematodes per 42cm diam. pot. Tomato yield was reduced by the nematode infection. Severity of infection was on the decreasing order of M. javanica, M. incognita, M. arenaria, M. hapla, ranging from $80\%$ by M. javanica to only $7\%$ by M. hapla. Yield reduction by infection of M. hapla was more prominent in Boksu 2 than in Rutgers. However the results were vice versa for the other nematode species, The top fresh-weight of Rutgers inoculated with 10,000 nematodes was greater than root weight, regardless of the nematode species, whereas plant height and top fresh weight decreased with increasing root weight when inoculated with inoculum density of 1,000/pot.
The biocontrol agent Serratia plymuthica A21-4 was selected and proved as an excellent inhibitor of Phytophthora blight of pepper through in vitro and in vivo experiments in previous studies. To enhance the colonizing density of S. plymuthica A21-4 on plant root and rhizosphere soil, some soil conditions might effect on the colonization of the bacteria were examined. The results obtained from the study indicated that the soils containing more sand were favorable to root colonization of S. plymuthica A21-4. Organic amendment such as 3% maize straw(w/w) was helpful to colonize the bacteria in root and soil. The soil temperature about $20^{\circ}C$, water content around 40%, and soil pH near to neutral or slightly acidic, were optimum condition for the colonization of S. plymuthica A21-4 in the rhizosphere soil and roots of pepper. In addition, existence of indigenous biotic entities was beneficial to the colonization of S. plymuthica A21-4.

This study was investigated to find out the optimum planting densities of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGE about growth characters, yield components and yield at 3 planting densities by direct sowing cultivated after barley Stem length was long In dense planting of 20$\times$10cm and short in spacious planting of 30$\times$10cm and 40$\times$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Stem diameter was thick in spacious planting of 30$\times$10cm and 40$\times$10cm and was thin in dense planting of 20$\times$cm by direct sewing cultivated after barley. Length and dry weight of root per plant were decreased in dense planting of 20$\times$10cm and were increased in spacious planting of 30$\times$10cm and 40$\times$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Yield of dry root was highest in optimum planting density(30$\times$10cm:33 plants/$m^2$) by direct sowing cultivated after barley. The correlation coefficient between number of planting plant and stem length showed highly positive correlation. These characters of stem diameter, number of branches, main root length and yield of dry root mentioned above showed negative correlations with planting plants.

Cylindrocarpon destructans is a soil-borne plant pathogenic fungus causing root rot on ginseng and trees. Rapid and exact detection of this pathogen was practiced on ginseng seedlings by nested PCR using speciesspecific primer set. The second round of PCR amplification by Dest 1 and Dest 4 primer set formed 400 bp of species-specific fragment of C. destructans from the product of first round of amplification by ITS 1 and ITS 4 primer set. In the PCR sensitivity test based on DNA density, nested PCR detected to the limit of one fg and it meant the nested PCR could detect up to a few spores of C. destructans. Also, nested PCR made it possible to detect the pathogen from ginseng seedlings infected by replantation on artificial infested soil. Our nested PCR results using species-specific primer set could be utilized for diagnosis of root rot disease in ginseng cultivation.
In order to increase the indoor air purification effect of plants, plants need to be placed on 5-10% of indoor spaces. To increase the density and utilization of plants in indoor spaces, studies on bio-wall, a vertical green wall system, have been recently conducted. The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of 7 indoor plants introduced to the system and their rooting zones at different irrigation cycles. This study was conducted to investigate a proper irrigation cycle for the continuous maintenance of bio-wall systems. The conditions of their growth environment were maintained as follows: light intensity, 20-50 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD; and temperature, 20 - 25℃. For fertilization, Hyponex diluted with water at the ratio of 1:1,000 was supplied to plants. Irrigation was treated at intervals of 1, 3, 5, and 7 days for 1 hour at a time. As a result, there was no significant difference in the growth of plants between different irrigation cycles. Dieffenbachia 'Marianne' showed a significant decrease in the number of leaves at the irrigation cycle of 7 days. In addition, the chlorophyll content was relatively low at the irrigation cycle of 7 days. In terms of the color of leaves, a decrease in L value and b value and an increase in a value were observed, resulting in changes in brightness and color. Ardisia pusilla 'Variegata' showed a slightly higher photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductance when it was watered every day and once per 5 days, while Epipremnum aureum showed a relatively higher photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductance at the irrigation cycle of 3 days. In the case of root activity, it was found that the longer irrigation cycle, the higher root activity compared to daily irrigation. The development of roots of Peperomia clusiifolia was promoted by watering at long intervals. However, in the case of Aglaonema 'Siam-Aurora', the total number of roots decreased at the interval of 7 days. In conclusion, a proper irrigation cycle for the sustainable maintenance of vertical bio-wall systems seems to be 3 days.
