  • Selective lumbosacral radiculography and nerve root block techniques are very useful in determining the nerve root involved. We have done the lumbar root block to 61-year-old female who had suffered from low back pain radiating to right lower leg which was not relieved by epidural steroid injection two times. $L_5$ root block was performed under the fluoroscopic C-arm guide. When the needle was in correct position, we injected contrast medium (Isovist$^{(R)}$ - 300, Schering, Germany). After we injected 1.5 cc isovist, the S1 root was figured but L5 root was not figured. When we reinjected 1.5 cc isovist, $S_1$ root was enhanced and $L_5$ root was slightly visible due to severe disc bulging and lateral spinal stenosis.

  • This experiment was conducted to find identification of ginseng root's age using the number of stem vestiges in rhizome. The number of stem vestiges in rhizome is a useful key to confirm the age of ginseng root as follow : 4-year-old root has two, 5-year-old root has three, 6-year-old root has four. The distribution of stem vestiges in rhizome each year root are as follow : 2 stem vestiges in 4-year-old root is 89.5%, 3 stem vestiges in 5-year-old root is 79.7%, 4 stem vestiges in 6-year-old root is 46.3%. However, the limiting factors of identification of ginseng root's age using the number of stem vestiges in rhizome is appearance of multi-stem per plant and appearance of destroyed stem vestige in rhizome. The ratio of appearance of multi-stem per plant and destroyed stem vestige in rhizome are increased according to root age.

  • Objective: This study evaluated the feasibility of ultrasound-guided lumbar nerve root block (LNRB) and S1 nerve root block by identifying spread patterns via fluoroscopy in cadavers. Method: A total of 48 ultrasound-guided injections were performed in 4 fresh cadavers from L1 to S1 roots. The target point of LNRB was the midpoint between the lower border of the transverse process and the facet joint at each level. The target point of S1 nerve root block was the S1 foramen, which can be visualized between the median sacral crest and the posterior superior iliac spine, below the L5-S1 facet joint. The injection was performed via an in-plane approach under real-time axial view ultrasound guidance. Fluoroscopic validation was performed after the injection of 2 cc of contrast agent. Results: The needle placements were correct in all injections. Fluoroscopy confirmed an intra-foraminal contrast spreading pattern following 41 of the 48 injections (85.4%). The other 7 injections (14.6%) yielded typical neurograms, but also resulted in extra-foraminal patterns that occurred evenly in each nerve root, including S1. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided injection may be an option for the delivery of injectate into the S1 nerve root, as well as lumbar nerve root area.

  • When Newton's method, or Halley's method is used to approximate the pth root of 1-z, a sequence of rational functions is obtained. In this paper, a beautiful formula for these rational functions is proved in the square root case, using an interesting link to Chebyshev's polynomials. It allows the determination of the sign of the coefficients of the power series expansion of these rational functions. This answers positively the square root case of a proposed conjecture by Guo(2010).

  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of force loading on root damage caused by contact with temporary anchorage devices (TADs) during orthodontic treatment and to examine the repair process 4, 8, and 12 weeks after TAD contact by micro-computed tomography (CT). Methods: We enrolled 42 volunteers who required bilateral upper first premolar extractions. The experimental study design was as follows. For both first premolars, cantilever springs were placed, and then TADs were immediately inserted between the premolars of all volunteers. According to the removal order of the appliances, the participants were divided into the TAD group (Group T: n = 21, only TAD removal) and the spring group (Group S: n = 21, only spring removal). A splitmouth design was adopted in both groups as follows. For each volunteer, the left premolars were extracted 4, 8, or 12 weeks after TAD-root contact. The right premolars were extracted immediately after contact in both groups (Groups T-C and S-C) and used as positive controls. Resorption volumes and numbers of craters were determined by micro-CT. Results: The numbers of resorption craters were higher in Group T than in Group S at 8 and 12 weeks (p < 0.01). Crater volumes were higher in Group T than in Group S at 4 and 12 weeks (p < 0.01, both). Conclusions: Root injury was not completely repaired 12 weeks after root-TAD contact, even when the TADs were removed in cases of continuous force application.

  • This study was conducted to develop a recipe for a nutritional cookie with lotus root powder that had the optimal composition of ingredients and texture resulting in high preference by all age groups. Wheat flour was partially substituted with lotus root powder to reduce its content. Response Surface Methodology was used to analyze the measured results, which showed 16 experimental points including 2 replicates for lotus root powder, sugar and butter. The compositional and functional properties were measured, and these values were applied to a mathematical model. A canonical form and perturbation plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the final mixture product. The sensory evaluation results showed significant values in color (p<0.01), texture (p<0.05) and overall quality (p<0.05). As a result, the optimal sensory ratio was determined to be 22.59 g of lotus root powder, and 53.08 g of sugar for every 120 g of butter.

  • In this paper, a tentative Kth order Newton-Raphson's floating point number Nth root algorithm for K order convergence rate in one iteration is proposed by applying Taylor series to the Newton-Raphson root algorithm. Using the proposed algorithm, $F^{-1/N}$ and $F^{-(N-1)/N}$ can be computed from iterative multiplications without division. It also predicts the error of the algorithm iteration and iterates only until the predicted error becomes smaller than the specified value. Since the proposed algorithm only performs the multiplications until the error gets smaller than a given value, it can be used to improve the performance of a floating point number Nth root unit.

  • Forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor x S. bicolor) was cultivated for knowing the effect of alum sludge application on its root growth in a mountainous site, Kumsan. And the results obtained are as follows: The available P205 content in the soil seemed to decrease with the advance of level of alum sludge application. And plant P content decreased with the advance of sludge application without phosphate fertilizer. With phosphate fertilizer, root number of the forage was greater than that without the fertilizer. The root growth of forage sorghum was the highest with NPK and the least in control and alum application, and it is not recommended to apply NPK and alum together for the growth of the forage root. • Objective: Two findings easily found at coronal source images of MR myelography (MRM) were evaluated : dorsal root ganglion (DRG) swelling and running course abnormality (RCA) of L5 exiting root at foramen or extraforamen. We tried to find the sensitivity of each finding when root was compressed. Methods: From 2004 July to 2006, one hundred and ten patients underwent one side paraspinal decompression for their L5 root foraminal or extraforaminal compression at L5-S1 level. All kinds of conservative treatments failed to improve leg symptom for several months. Before surgery, MRI, CT and MRM were done. Retrospective radiologic analysis for their preoperative MRM coronal source images was done to specify root compression sites and L5 root morphologic changes. Results: DRG swelling was found in 66 (60%) of 110 patients. DRG swelling has statistically valuable meaning in foraminal root compression (chi-square test, p<0.0001). Seventy-two (66%) in 110 patients showed abnormal alteration of running course. Abnormal running course has statistically valuable meaning in foraminal or extraforaminal root compression (chi-square test, p<0.0001). Conclusion: Three-dimensional MRM provides precise thin sliced coronal images which are most close to real operative views. DRG swelling and running course abnormality of L5 exiting root are two useful findings in diagnosing L5 root compression at L5-S1 foramen or extraforamen. MRM is thought to provide additional diagnostic accuracy expecially in L5-S1 foraminal and extraforaminal area.
