Gastrodia elata infected with root rot disease was collected from cultivated G. elata fields in Gimcheon, Korea, in 2018. G. elata tuber surfaces exhibited root rot disease symptoms of dark-grey lesions and white fungal mycelial growth. The fungus was isolated from symptomatic tubers and cultured. Based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA and translation elongation factor 1-alpha, the isolated fungus was Fusarium oxysporum. This is the first report of root rot caused by F. oxysporum on G. elata tubers in Korea.
Objectives : In order to distinguish morphological characteristics of trunk bark and root bark of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica (Rehder) Nakai and the trunk bark and root bark of Hemiptelea davidii Planchon were sampled and compared in terms of their external and internal features with flour states according to their medical use, through microscopic examination. Methods : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and the flour of it was mounted by the liquid made by the same ratio of each of glycerin, acetic acid, and water, and then observed and photographed by olympus-BHT. Results : 1. Internal Features 1) A large parenchymatous cell was observed in the phloem of the slice of both trunk bark and root bark of Ulmi Cortex. However, both of the trunk bark and root bark of Hemipteleae Cortex did not have parenchymatous cell in the phloem; instead, stone cells including much square crystal of calcium oxalate were distributed around fiber bundle, and the parenchymatous cell included much druse crystal of calcium oxalate. 2) In both the Ulmi Cortex and Hemipteleae Cortex, rhytidome was observed in trunk bark, but not in root bark, but in the parenchymatous cell of the root bark of the Ulmi Cortex contained starch grain. 2. Flour States 1) In the flour of root bark of the Ulmi Cortex, a large parenchymatous cell was observed. However, in the flour of trunk bark and root bark of Hemipteleae Cortex, no parenchymatous eel was found; instead, stone cell including square crystal of calcium oxalate and druse crystal of calcium oxalate were observed. 2) There was no remarkable difference between the trunk bark and root bark of Hemipteleae Cortex. However, starch grain was contained in the parenchymatous cell of the root bark of Ulmi Cortex but not in the trunk bark of it. Conclusions : There were some morphological differences in external, internal, and flour parts of Ulmi Cortex and Hemipteleae Cortex. In particular, there was a morphological difference in flour states between the trunk bark and root bark of Ulmi Cortex, it is possible to use microscope to distinguish their flour states.

The correlations between growth charateristics and root yield were investigated in 74 peony lines collected from chief producing place in Korea. Among these peony lines, single flower type was 61% and the rest were double type. And pink flower was in majority. Stem length, stem diameter and number of stem per plant were $50{\sim}60cm$, $7{\sim}8mm$ and $5{\sim}6$, respectively. Generally, disease tolerance and root yield were better in single flower type peonies than double type. Among single flower type peonies, the correlation coefficients between each characteristics and root yield were as follows : number of stem $(0.676^{**})$, number of roots $(0.646^{**})$, stem length $(0.617^{**})$, root diameter $(0.590^{**})$ and root length $(0.443^{**})$. Correlation between root yield and paeoniflorin content was highly significant $(0.383^{**})$ among single flower type peonies and significant $(-0.382^*)$ among double flower type peonies. Correlation between stem diameter and root yield was not significant (0.066).
In GMA welding of sheet metal, the short circuit metal transfer mdoe is preferred because of its low heat input and capability of bridging the root gap. The molten electrode is transferred to the workpiece during repectitive short circuit in the model. The waveform of welding current or voltage and the frequency of short circuiting are affected by a number of factors including: magnitude of welding current and voltage, root gap, electrode extension, power supply characteristics, and so on. In this study experimental models were proposed, which are able to determine the relationship between the root gap and short circuit frequency and the relationship between the root gap and appropriate welding speed that produces the good quality of back bead without burn through. Using the experimental models, the root gap can be obtained from measuring the short circuit frequency, and then the appropriate weldig speed to the root gap can be determined. Thus a back bead control system was constructed by controlling the welding speed for maintaining the quality of back bead. The developed system has shown the successful capability of back bead control.
Microscopic study of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) infected with Phytophthora capsici, causing Phytophthora blight of chili pepper, was conducted to compare histological and cytological characteristics in the root and stem of susceptible (C. annuum cv. Bugang) and resistant (C. annuum cv. CM334) pepper cultivars. The susceptible pepper roots and stems were extensively penetrated and invaded by the pathogen initially into epidermal cells and later cortical and vascular cells. Host cell walls adjacent to and invaded by the infecting hyphae were partially dissolved and structurally loosened with fine fibrillar materials probably by cell wall-degrading enzymes of the pathogen. In the resistant pepper, the pathogen remained on root epidermal surface at one day after inoculation, embedded and captured in root exudation materials composed of proteins and polysaccharides. Also the pathogen appeared to be blocked in its progression at the early infection stages by thickened middle lamellae. At 3 days after inoculation, the oomycete hyphae were still confined to epidermal cells of the root and at most outer peripheral cortical cells of the stem, resulting from their invasion blocked by wound periderms formed underneath the infection sites and/or cell wall appositions bounding the hyphal protrusions. All of these aspects suggest that limitation of disease development in the resistant pepper may be due to the inhibition of the pathogen penetration, infection, invasion, and colonization by the defense structures such as root exudation materials, thickened middle lamellae, wound peridems and cell wall appositions.
This study evaluates the effects of cultured wild ginseng root (0.05%, 0.1% v/w) and xylitol in kimchi. The fermented characteristics of kimchi were investigated during 28 days of fermentation at $4^{\circ}C$. The pH value in the sample with the cultured wild ginseng root was higher than that of control group. The total acidity in the sugar groups (SG groups) was higher than that of xylitol groups (XG groups). Comparing total bacterial count, XG groups were lower than SG groups, regardless of the additional ratio of the cultured wild ginseng root. Reducing sugar of XG groups decreased more slowly than SG groups for seven days; glucose and fructose of XG groups were lower than the control group. DPPH radical scavenging activity was higher in groups with cultured wild ginseng root than in control. In the result of sensory evaluation, XG groups were more preferred than other groups. In conclusion, our results indicate that cultured wild-ginseng root and xylitol have a positive effect on the quality of kimchi, such as antimicrobial and antioxidant functions.

GPS is vulnerable to jamming because of extremely low signal power. Many anti-jamming techniques are studied for complement this vulnerability. Anti-jamming techniques using array antenna are most effective technique and these techniques are required the DOA estimates. MUSIC algorithm and Root-MUSIC Algorithm are typical algorithms used in DOA estimation. Two algorithms have different characteristics, so the choice of an algorithm may depends on many factors such as the environment and the system requirements. The analysis and performance comparison of both algorithms is necessary to choose the best method to apply. This paper summarizes the theory of MUSIC and Root-MUSIC algorithms. And this paper extends both algorithm to estimate two-dimensional angles. The software simulator of both algorithms are implemented to evaluate the performance. Root-MUSIC algorithm has the computational advantage on ULA. MUSIC algorithm is applicable to any antenna array. MUSIC shows better estimation performance when number of array element is small while the computational load of MUSIC is much higher than Root-MUSIC.
Cytological changes of cowpea root at the early stage of root nodule formation (within 5 days after inoculation) were viewed by light and electron microscopy. The root region affected by the rhizobial infection, which was composed of a redial array of cortical cells, had prominent cell divisions, mostly anticlinal in the inner cortical cells and in addition oblique and periclinal in the outer cells. An infected root hair cell (or root hair-producing epidermal cell) had numerous infection threads and degenerated cytoplasm. Module meristem was formed adjacent to the infected root hair cell, and characterized by dense cytoplasm, prominent nucleus, numerous small vacuoles, and increased plastids, containing infection threads as well. Bacterial cells were dividing inside the infection thread, the wall materials of which appeared to be dissolved ad accumulated in small vacuoles. inner cortical cells contiguous to the nodule meristem appeared to be actively dividing and dedifferentiating; however, they were not infected by the rhizobia. These structural characteristics are similar to those in the Bradyrhizobium-soybean association previously reported, and may reflect the similar cytological process in cowpea in the early nodule formation.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of growth characteristics and mineral contents of ginseng seedling grown in different locations on ginseng growth and root yield. Ginseng seedling produced in 16 farmers' field at the semi-Yangjik seedbed were planted and cultivated in a field with same cultural practices. Missing plant was increased with increased year of ginseng age, especially severe at 5-year-old ginseng. Rate of missing plant was different among the origins of the seedling, even with the same weights. Negative correlation was noted between the missing rate of 3-year-old ginseng plants and NH4-N content of the seedling, but positive correlation between the missing rate and K2O and Ca contents of the seedling. Root yield of 6-year-old ginseng was also affected by the origins of ginseng seedlings. Root yield was high in ginseng plant from 0.6∼0.9 g see dings compared to those from over 0.9 g seedlings.
Since MTA has many beneficial properties such as biocompatibility, great sealing capacity, antibacterial effects, low cytotoxicity, and stimulation of formation of mineralized tissue, it has been widely used as the material of choice in root-end filling, apexification, pulpotomy, perforation repair and so on. However, despite its favorable characteristics, MTA presents working properties which are less than ideal. The resulting cement from the mixing of powder and water is difficult to manipulate, and its setting time has been reported to be 2 h 45 min whereas the working time is <4 minutes. Additional moisture is also required to activate the setting of the cement. Moreover, according to recent studies, the physical properties of MT A may be hampered by acidic environment or blood contamination. Therefore, practitioners may have surprisingly worse results than they expected when they are not fully acquainted with the characteristics and manipulation method of MTA.
