Second, a significant difference among romantic attachment groups was found with the fearful group reporting a higher level of interpersonal problems than the secure and dismissing groups. Gender was a significant factor on independent problem in interpersonal problems. Third, avoidance and anxiety of romantic attachment dimensions were positively correlated with interpersonal problems. There was a gender difference in the relationship between avoidance of romantic attachment dimension and overgenerous in interpersonal problems. Drawing from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), this study examined the changes in romantic relationship engagement among Korean adolescents across the country over a three-year period and the effects of the individual, familial, and school characteristics on the experience. Panel logit analysis showed that Korean adolescents were more likely to be engaged in a romantic relationship as they became older. Male adolescents were more likely than their female counterparts to have a romantic partner. The higher scores of self-esteem increased the likelihood of adolescents to be in a romantic relationship. On the other hand, having an opposite-sex sibling, the level of parental warmth, and annual household income did not have a significant relationship with the chance of romantic relationship engagement. On the contrary, all school-related variables were statistically related to the odds of being in a romantic relationship. Going to a sex-mixed school increased the odds, whereas academic adjustment and conformity to school rules decreased the likelihood. In addition, the positive relationships with schoolmates and teachers were associated with a higher chance of having a romantic partner. Based on these findings, the implications, limitations, and future research directions were also suggested.
This study examined the effects of self-concealment and satisfication among the basic psychological needs on the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships in early adulthood. The study examined the mediating effects of basic psychological needs, autonomy, competence, and relatedness, in the relationship between self-concealment and the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships. For this purpose, a self-report survey was conducted on 197 adults aged 20 to 29 who are currently in opposite-sex romantic relationships, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS MACRO v3.5. The main results of this study are as follows. First, gender, age, and duration of dating period among the subject's demo-social variables significantly impacted the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships. Second, satisfying relatedness among the basic psychological needs had the largest influence on the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships, and self-concealment negatively affected the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships. Third, relatedness from the basic psychological needs had a significant mediating effect between self-concealment and the commitment to romantic relationships. It can be seen that it is crucial to lower self-concealment and to satisfy relatedness among the basic psychological needs in order to promote commitment to romantic relationships in early adulthood. This study is meaningful in that it tried to reveal the influence of individual psychological factors on the commitment to the romantic relationship, and it is significant that it proposed a basis for intervention to promote the commitment to opposite-sex romantic relationships in early adulthood.

Purpose: For the current article an examination was done as to whether engaging in sexual intercourse before or during adolescence has a negative impact on the suicidal behaviors of suicide ideation, suicide attempt, and suicide lethality and whether the impact varies according to the context of sexual intercourse and/or gender. Methods: Adolescents who experienced casual sex and romantic sex were compared to adolescents who retained their virginity. Data was from samples drawn from the three waves (2010~2012) of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey. Logistic models were used to adjust for a wide array of confounding variables. Results: Any type of sexual intercourse increases risk of all suicidal behaviors. Sexual intercourse in a romantic relationship exhibits enhanced risk of suicidal behaviors compared to casual sex. Adjusting for experience of sexual violence, however, decreases risk of romantic sex substantially, turning some estimates statistically insignificant. In addition, risks for suicide lethality are greater for girls than boys. Conclusion: Romantic sex put adolescents at higher risk for suicidal behaviors than casual sex owing to prevalent sexual violence in the relationships. Girls suffer more substantively adverse outcomes than boys. These results suggest that adolescents will benefit from comprehensive education on sexuality and sexual behaviors regarding how to form and maintain a romantic relationship that is characterized by personal integrity and mutual respect. It is also important to help victims of sexual violence recover from traumatic events by providing emotional support and effective counseling.
